Did you know that Hary Houdini has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

I learned that from my Fact or Crap calendar from Woot.

Just happened to see them use a spring-loaded glass puncher on a repeat of MythBusters yesterday. They were surprised at how effective it was (keys/kicking car window did not work).

Also great for those long road trips when the kids just won't shut up.

Seriously though, every driver should have one of these. You never know when some distracted driver swerves her car and sends you into a conveniently located body of water. This may even save your life.

The average rating on Buzzillions is 2.6 stars or so. Not that otterific.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

I'm wondering how this is any more productive than a steeltoe boot.

Sheesh, I hope I never have to use one of these.

And to that end, I will live in denial of the possibility I will ever need one of these devices and thus will not purchase one of these kits :p

I got my sister something similar to this a couple years ago. Later, she told me she kept it in the trunk of her car so she'd always have it in the car when she needed it.

    /facepalm

I don't think it was these exact devices, but the Mythbusters tried out glass-punch tools a while back, and gave them a thumbs up.

    So, I'm in.

I do believe the mythbusters tested these little dudes (or a similar window breaker) and found it to be pretty much the only way out of an underwater car. Pressure points or something-- I wasn't paying enough attention. I was busy waiting for something to explode.

I can't tell you how many times I've been trapped in a sinking car and thinking to myself, "if only I had a second escape tool..." Hooray Tuesday! (what? gifts, you say? what a ridiculous notion)

If you don't have this, you might someday die. :-)

Two things to consider if I was to have it on my keychain:

    1. How heavy/large/clumsy are they? Do they seriously add any inconvenience for having it on the chain all the time?

    2. Are these considered weapons/dangerous/unacceptable at airport security checkpoints or other secure location such as landmark attractions / state buildings / elsewhere, where you have to pass a metal detector to get in?

In other words - would having this on me at all times add a lot of headache because I'd have to remember to leave it behind in certain situations?

This will only work on side windows because the windshield is *laminated*. It's laminated for safety reasons - if a big rock was shot up into your windshield, it would not be able to penetrate it and hit you on your eye brow.

Does anyone know how well the seatbelt cutter works compared to the Pro version of this product? It looks like the design difference would make it much more difficult to use.

They don't exactly instill confidence in these things. I mean the very fact they ship you two of them must mean what???? Okay okay it was a joke, yeah yeah two for Tuesday etc. Still if I bought one, I mean two, they would be collecting dust somewhere until my wife says, "Honey, if you are not going to use these things then lets get rid of them." With that, they would be in the trash in no time and any explanation suggesting that "We don't know if we are ever going to need them" will not pass the logic boards in her brain, so with that, I am not buying them but I hope the two that I would have bought will be shipped to someone else who will use them in good health!

Wow. I used to think I was paranoid. But this Woot! has caused me to reevaluate... Whenever I start needing to carry around a car escape tool, that's when I've crossed the line.
