Solution: All I had to do was use a shaft through the key ring and pull straight out. After several times it loosened up enough to pull with the key ring. You could sparingly use a small file or emery board to adjust the catch if you're still having a problem. Hope that helps.

just guessing

ps that sounds like a good way to get glass all up in yo fingers!

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm guessing it works best on large, thin panes of glass. I wish I had one to try it out on.

Oh and no worries on the safety front. I used leather gloves, safety goggles, and even draped a towel over the jar to catch any small fragments. It turns out it was all unnecessary, though. All it made was one tiny chip! :/

Yes, I did that too. I recognize that this is a Darwinian sort of situation, so I am not blaming anyone but myself. but, in attempting to figure the thing out, do not hypothesize that the big black plunger thing is some sort of roostering mechanism that needs to be pushed in before you can trigger the device to make it work. Because while it is indeed a roostering mechanism, it is also a self-release mechanism, and the little pointy thing inside will poke deep into your thumb/finger, leaving a very nice black-and-blue depression that hurts for several days (although it doesn't break the skin).

This device will also destroy cantaloupes, but that is another story.

EDIT: sigh. Where it says "roostering" above, read "c o c k i n g ."

I opened up my 2 today. The covers were very hard to pull off at first, but were much easier after the third or fourth time.

I received the two items, however, none of those items have a sharp cutting edge that can cut seat belts. Did I receive a complete package? Hoe can I return this product because I am not satisfied with what I received?

Thanks to the people that posted comments so I could figure out how to use this thing. Can't believe it didn't come with the instructions!

anyway, before you try to pull the plastic cover off (or put it on, since mine came with it partially off), insert the round key ring thing - then use that to pull. It's hard the first couple of times but then gets easier.

As for the light, you have to hold the switch in place to keep the light lit, it is designed that way (per the instructions)

Go to this page: http://www.houdinitool.com/products/houdini.aspx
and select the care and use guide. It gives a nice, one page pdf that you can print out. I bought several of these to give family members, so I printed copies for each of them.

If you slightly file down the nubs on the bottom side as s well as the indentations where they catch, it becomes much easier to pull open while still staying closed when you want.

Ok, seriously, these were crap. I have had tools like this before, and they were larger and much sturdier. These are really small, and can't imagine they will work in an emergency situation. I really feel ripped off, and I've never felt like that from Woot before.
