Well, if you didn't pull the trigger while I was away, it's too late - all the models are sold out (I believe the Acer was already when you posted).

I own a laptop and a netbook (in a addition to 2 desktops - personal and home office). They both come in handy - e.g. the laptop while waiting for my kids at the doctor's office, or the netbook at their ballgames.

If you mean is there a reason to own 2 netbooks, i can only think of geeky reasons (e.g. one Windows, one Linux). Since computers become obsolete so quickly, why buy 2 and watch them both depreciate? Personally, I'd at least stagger the purchases.

I'm a gambler at heart I guess but what's with the whining all the time lately? I can imagine the Woot staff getting a good laugh at times because in the end, they're bought or sold out. If not, they'll delay the next woot off and sit there through lunch. ;-)

As I said, they're sold out.

I know you have mega quality posts and accumulate more daily due to wonderful information you post but I have a question Night. Why should someone not buy 2 if that's what they want? I have over 10 year old desktop computers as back ups that still work well running Win XP or Win 2000 that are rock solid.

For the price, if I didn't already have netbooks in the home, I would have bought 2 also, maybe 3. I love the lightweight netbook, be it for travel or to sit somewhere else in the home away from my personal desktop. It doesn't matter if it's indoors or out, portability is the key with a netbook. The more the merrier in my home especially for a great price.

Who bought these??
They can't run windows 7 without lag.
You need at least 2GB of ram to run win 7 smoothly.

These are xp machines.

But if you're taking courses, or know a student, perhaps it would be worth looking into.

Usually the offer includes staff and teachers, the main qualifier is a dot edu email address. Also check for something MS calls "Office Ultimate" which is a steal when they offer the download for around $60-it has even more components than the traditional Office which goes for around $80 for the academic version.

Hello,

First of all, just because I try to help and and have "mega quality posts," doesn't mean I'm not wrong.

I did allude to "geeky reasons" to own more than one netbook. Also, if they will be used by different family members/coworkers (but owned by one person), no problem. Finally, I did say that there are good reasons to have a laptop and a netbook.

I still don't think most people really need to buy 2 netbooks at the same time, but if they have a reason, that's fine. I know people who have bought new "toys" out of excitement and rarely used them.

By the way, we have 9 running computers in my home (actually, one is an old one waiting to be retired, and another is a laptop that just left home with my college freshman son).

Most netbooks come with an outdated Windows Trial Office version (2007) and expect you to buy it via a key. Hence, it doesn't come with Office, to speak of.

Anyone know the cheapest way to get a working Microsoft Office (specifically, Word and PowerPoint)? Any version (within reason)? I plan to use my netbook for portable PowerPoint presentations and have very little cash.

Think about Ubuntu and Open Office. Both are free, work great on the netbooks and you'll see no difference in Open Office from the MS Office suite of products.

except when you realize that you have to go through extra work because everyone else in the world has a copy of office.

Don't get me wrong, I've used openoffice... but I'm back to Office.

As to someone commenting on using windows with 2GB... I'm on a notebook with 2GB using Windows 7 full version right now... it's just fine. I assume its actually faster with the starter win 7.

cage017 wrote:Thanks. I actually bought a Toshiba netbook from Best Buy a month ago that came with a portable drive (also from Toshiba). I'm slowly getting use to it as it's my first netbook.

Your link for the case is the same for the Samsung player. Since you said you have a Toshiba, I'm really interested in seeing what you use. Would you recommend a chillmat, sleeves, and/or skins (perferably one that doesn't attract fingerpirnts) for netbooks?

Sorry about that. Here's the link for the case: http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Clamshell-Designed-Netbooks-TNC101US/dp/B001RH9X1C/ (10.2 inch). It has enough room for the netbook, ac adaptor, dvd player and mouse. I use the Logitech V220 cordless mouse and set the trackpad to auto-disable when a mouse is plugged in. It's not a lot smaller than a standard mouse, so it doesn't feel foreign when I change machines. It lasts for weeks on a single AA battery. Amazon link for that is http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cordless-Optical-Notebooks-Silver/dp/B000RHZJN4/ but you can find them a lot cheaper on eBay. You don't need a chillpad. Netbooks don't run that hot especially the Toshiba which doesn't spin the HD when it isn't needed. I don't use any kind of protective skin. I just wipe it with a little windex and microfiber cloth something like these http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cordless-Optical-Notebooks-Silver/dp/B000RHZJN4/

cage017 wrote:

Are chillmats worth buying? IMO, they look too large for a netbook.

I use a cutting board I bought from a local department store for $12. It's just the right size and keeps the vents completely clear when I have my netbook in my lap.

I don't think you need anything else. My 17" AMD gaming laptop, which averages 65C when running some games, has been sitting on a cutting board for the last six years and is still doing just fine.

Just my opinion...

(Another recommendation is to install some kind of temperature monitoring program on your netbook. I use Mobile Monitor on my XP laptop but that doesn't work on Win7 so for my netbook I use Speedfan to watch the HDD and a Win7 desktop gagdget to watch the CPU temps.)

shortcode wrote:Heads up everyone... I worked at the US refurbishing outlet for 3 months; it's a scary place. The test techs they have are fired every 3 months to avoid having to pay them bennies and the repair techs are required to "clear" 40 units in an 8 hour shift, working at breakneck speeds. I'm not sayin' NOT to buy... just let it be known that the place that's fixing these is a craphole and they only pull 1-2 machines out of every 1000 that go out the door for QA checks...

(Company name is Revonate. They are a sister spring-off of a larger company called Seneca Data, located in Syracuse, NY)

I'm a little irked by former employees of the US refurbishing plant for Acer/Gateway/eMachines giving out bad information about the plant. It's getting tiring reading these day in and day out. So how about reading something from a *current* employee that actually knows what's going on, instead of some random tech that was a temp hire for a couple months?

First of all, the amount of machines pulled for QA is *much* higher than what was previously stated, it's more than 1 or 2 per thousand. The audit percentage is more around 15%.

Secondly, the tech support is damn helpful in getting replacements out. The process takes all of 30 minutes over the phone (if that). The risk involved in one being a failure out of the box is pretty low. And of course, you only hear about the people who have bad experiences, hardly those with good ones. I'd take those statements with a grain of salt.

Lastly, nobody's cut off before the 3 months to avoid paying benefits, the "breakneck" speed is hardly that, and you also got the number of hours worked a day wrong. But those are just minor details, right? It's okay. You did your job of playing troll. Have a cookie. You've earned it.

I'm going to return to my hole now. Figured I would just clear out some misconceptions.

I took an Asus model, replaced the 1 gigabyte of RAM with a 2 GB stick, swapped the 4 GB solid state disk for a 16 GB Super Talent model, and installed Windows 7 Pro.

Lo and behold, it played 480p videos on You Tube with ease. Slingbox is 480 resolution, right? So I imagine, with enough RAM, even the ones with the Atom N270 chip like mine had will handle your placeshifting needs.

I Had bought the item (The Asus), and thought I could send it to Canada. My bad I messed up the form, the only thing that was not validating was the postal code. I put the order in by using 00000 as my postal code and in the second address line I wrote 'postal code: k1k 2s2' <-- not actual postal code I entered.

After the order went through I email service@wooot.com explaining what I had done, their response was they don't ship to Canada and thus canceled my order. I replied and sent them a US mailing address Ive used before. (I can drive there in 45 minutes) and asked to have the order reactivated.

service@woot.com then responded saying my billing address is international, so I cannot make the order anyways!

I responded saying that Ive made 3 orders via woot before with my US shipping address and my Canadian billing address. Why it is an issue now!

I am hoping there is someone out there who can help me get my Asus, or at least explain why the US shipping address/ Canadian billing address rules have changed since the last woot Ive bought.

Numbers of use?

On the Gateway LT2104U, does anybody know for sure which "CORRECT" compatible 2 gig DDR2 533MHz SDRAM upgrade to get for this? I have searched all over the net and find conflicting results. Some Crucial 2 gig NON-ECC supposedly work along with Kingston, but can't get any specific module info. Likewise some 2 gig NON-ECC Crucial and Kingston do not work at all.

I was looking at this:
CT25664AC667 Crucial 2 gigs for around $40.00 shipped. Any thoughts ??

If you can get back into Windows 7, run the Gateway recovery software (I think is what it is called). Then Run CHKDSK to test the hard drive for errors - Start - Computer - Right Click the Drive or Local Disk - Properties - Tools - Error Checking - Check Now

If the issue persists again - then it sounds like a bad or corrupt hard drive.
