Each ball is the same.

Instead, I'd get some Zen Magnets, they're cheaper (under 25$ shipped) and they look nicer.

edit: here's the link to the 216 set, also they have a sale going on for some barely oversized magnets here.

The cube is not impossible, just takes patience =)

elpepe wrote:I have had these for 8 months and I still can't get them into the original cube no matter how many times I watch you video tutorial. It is imposssibleeee. My advice to purchasers today, enjoy that original cube while you still have it.

These are fun as The Strangers (2008)though.

I received these as a present last Christmas, and boy are they fun. The price woot has them for is half of the regular price to boot! If you want them, buy them now. If you're unsure, buy them now. If you don't want them...buy them anyways. I'm considering on buying some more to give as gifts(or perhaps not to give as gifts).

These are addictive. A friend of mine got these for his birthday and everybody at the party played with them (everybody being >21). A good deal from Woot! Get one set for you and one for a friend. It's the gift that will surely be lost under the couch and stuck to the back of the fridge, but then you can just buy more!

I would say "cheaper on Amazon" - but isn't Woot technically Amazon too now? How odd.

Amazon = 1 set / Woot = 2 sets. When adding them together, woot outprices the cost of 2 sets by $1.00. I'm just saying.

I'm just so wootful

DealExtreme has 100 for $12.28

These appear to be the same thing without the branding and snazzy carry case.

Roughly 2x the price of this woot, since woot is offering two sets of 216 -- so these are a good deal comparatively.

I LOVE THESE

You can make otterific jewelry.

I've made necklaces with pendents, bracelets, rings, earrings...

Individual balls, each has a positive and a negative side.

The interesting part of the trick is watching orientation. If you see someone who knows how to make these dance, or watch videos online, you'll notice they're very careful while crafting shapes to note which side is up. Two identical shapes will often interact totally differently based on which way you orient them.

Build triangles, and build hexagons. You can go anywhere from there.

These are great fun for about the first two hours. After that they just end up in the junk drawer with all the other worthless crap you've bought. Trust me I know.

These are perhaps the most fun things you could ever have at your desk at work. Somehow they're infinitely mindless and infinitely fascinating at the same time. From my experience, the only problem is that everybody you work with will constantly be asking you to play with them. Good thing this Woot is for two!

These things are sweet. The number of shapes you can make is limitless, and they are a good stress reliever too. I got them at a conference. My office mates and I couldn't stop playing with them. Finally I gave my set to my eight year old nephew, who was fascinated by them for days.

Swallowed magnets can stick together across intestines causing serious infections and death.

Don't like someone? Bet them $10 they can't swallow 10 of these bad boys.

Seems pretty expensive...bought a 216 count cube a while back and love it.

A word of advice: don't play with your balls too hard (so to speak...) or else some of them might go flying off into the sunset. Happened to me a while back and I'm still missing a ball or two.

Contrary to the description, rare earth magnets should not be snapped together. They are actually somewhat fragile, and they can be dented or broken this way.

I got these as a gift for speaking on a panel one time. I know, they look stupid, but each panel member got one before the event and we could hardly pay attention once we opened them. They are fun to organize into different shapes, patterns, or just string along and play "snake". Good stuff, buy some.

calebo27 wrote:Ugh, RARELY do i comment on woot, but "Bucky Balls" stole this model from www.neocube.com. Bucky Balls are made of lower quality and the coating wears off MUCH faster, making them more toxic to pets and children. Please, if you have pets or small children, read up on the dangers of these. It's worth it to spend the extra dollar on "Neo Cube," which is essentially the same thing.

I have the Neo Cube, and I can attest that they are quite well made. Now, I don't have the Bucky Balls, nor the Zen Magnets version, but I've heard good things about both of them. I would stay away from the no-name versions sold at ebay (and that amazon link earlier). But, by all means, buy a set from one of the three brands, you will NOT regret it.

This deal is tempting, but I don't know how well they'll play with my NeoCube magnets.
EDIT: Answering my own question, the Bucky Ball brand magnets are bigger that my NeoCube, and will not mix well. Source: http://zenmagnets.com/index.php?p=1_9_Oversize-Sale

Those are not genuine Buckyballs... just a similar product.

Also- THANK YOU WOOT. My geek cousin borrowed these from her geek friend and won't stop talking about them. I planned to suck it up and buy a couple sets for her Christmas present and you just saved me like $30.

Well if they're not monopoles I'm unimpressed.

That being said, I've watched the YouTube videos... Is it as easy as it appears to make intricate and complicated patterns? Or do the little buggers more likely than not end up in a hodgepodge of rare earth lumpiness?

"Remedy: Consumers should take the Buckyballs(r) high powered magnets sets labeled “Ages 13+” away from children under 14 immediately and contact Maxfield and Oberton for instructions on receiving a refund upon return of a complete set of magnets."

I find this line of the recall notice hilarious for no real reason. This is why America can;t have nice things, when you can't sell magnets to people under 14 because they might eat them, pretty soon all consumer products are going to start having ESRB like ratings OH JOY!

Unfortunately, this toy does not contain the long sought Magnetic monopole. If it did I could buy 3 and report to Stockholm for my Nobel Prize! ;-)

In answer to your question, all of the Buckyball magnets are have a "north" and "south" pole, just like all magnets humanity has so far discovered.
