If anyone has any suggestions for this curious situation - besides shipping it back - please leave a message.

Turn off your lights (or turn them on to 100%) and try again. I have a few cold cathode fluorescents in my bedroom and if they're dimmed the Roku doesn't seem to see the remote. Apparently some TVs also cause this sort of interference.

so so good

I am pretty much incapable of anything handyman more difficult than tying my shoelaces, and it took me maybe 20min from opening the box, to it all hooked up with it linked and DLing from my Netflix, Pandora & Amazon accounts.

Great quality, fast DLing speeds, great price.

I lost a weekend of my life playing around.

Oh, and FedEx finally has my unit, er, the Roku, in their grubby little hands. Hopefully, I'll get it by the end of the week. Pretty much blows my chance of seeing the rest of the baseball season on MLB TV. Well, I'll get about a week in.

Now I need to go out and get a new HD television. I've been trying to decide if I should get my 5-year-old Sony tube tv (great picture!) fixed or get a new one. Guess I'll go new and get something bigger. *sob*

My 6 year old Sony CRT started acting up earlier this year. I snagged (and you can too) a really good deal on a 50" 720p Plasma. Yes... 720p is not 1080p but at 10 feet away from the screen you can't tell the difference. If you sit 3 feet from the screen you can see the pixels on the 720p and not on the 1080p... but I never sit that close. Anyway, if you shop around you can find top performing Panasonic 720p plasmas for less that $800. Do yourself a big favor and don't spend any money on fixing your CRT... its time to move up to HD.

Ah, you're clearly one of the unlucky 10%. You're buying a refurbished product. It is true that *most* of them are shipped within 5 days. In order to save on costs, woot sells more product than they actually have, making the assumption that over 10% of people return their woot. Once some of the original shipment is returned, they ship the returned refurbished product out to those that haven't yet received one. Don't worry, you'll get your roku box eventually. Woot reserves fedex tracking numbers so you know that they are still working on it. Just think of it as you doing your part to ensure that woot is able to continue to offer such great deals! Best of luck!

Just received this reply from the Customer Service Gods at woot!:

"Your tracking is valid. Your order has shipped, but FedEx hasn’t scanned in your package to show movement yet. Give it another day or two and it should show movement."

I wonder if the FedEx/Smartpost monkeys will scan it before it's delivered.

I just finished lunch so I need to go "show movement".

My 3 Rokus arrived today. Cracked the boxes open on them and all of the boxes look brand new, minus the yellow highlighter on the barcodes of the back of them. One of them also has a Quick Start guide which looks like it might have been read once. They arrived in plain brown boxes but have the same cardboard insert the retail ones did. So... other than those minor differences, they appear to be new. Remotes are all plastic wrapped, no fingerprints nor scratches on them, boxes are similarly-new appearing. Fired one up and it came right on. No problems so far. Will try all 3 tonight when I get home. Kinda looks bad to be playing with this on the conference room projector, but damn it looks good.

Anyone know what the yellow highlighter on the back barcode means?

While I'm at it, a little serial # bingo:
D0C9AX........
D0C9DL
D0D04J

I'm assuming the 3rd character represents a revision/version number, could be completely wrong.

Got my player in but the Wifi doesn't work. It will not see my network, or any of my neighbors. I called Roku to troubleshoot, not much help. I even went out and purchased a new router and a very long ethernet cable. First tried the new Belkin N router, still no go, then updated the unit via the cable, tried again, and still no luck. I now have to fax over a proof of purchase to Roku then they will continue to help me.

This all makes me a sad panda

Is this true, or a load of malarkey? If true, I'll be more than a wee bit ticked to receive not a refurb, but a *used* refurb, and have to wait an especially long time for the privilege.

Mine works pretty well. The only quirk is that if the box has to be reset, I have to reconnect to wireless manually.

Also, the batteries were bad out of the box. One was actually smashed almost flat!

Other than a few minor scratches, it was cosmetically pretty good.

Got mine last night and waited until my kid went to bed at 9 before starting to play with it.

It worked flawlessly.

My wireless hookup was okay, but videos would pause and rebuffer once in a while. Turns out I had placed my Roku poorly and it wasn't getting a consistently strong enough signal. Switched over to a wired Cat5 cable and it's been totally and completely otterific.

I plan today to link into my Roku account from the office and add all of the private channels I can find (well, everything that isn't pr0n). I can later preview them individually and delete any I don't choose to keep. I figure it's easier to remove something I know I don't want than to add something I might want but don't know about.

Here's the rundown of all of the private channel codes I am presently aware of:

71B0Y = American Movie Classics
XM7EG = AnomaliesTV
WSW1P = Archive Classic Movies
NMJS5 = Archive.org
EXPEL = Chaneru 0.4 (home media browser)
NXFBW = Google Voice
9OFQX = Hubblecast HD
X0MCZ = Last.FM
TMLJW = *LDS Video Podcasts (LDS/BYU videos)
HIBMX = Nasa TV
9MQBZ = *Phoenix-area Traffic Cam demo
NEJXJ = Picasa Web
H9DWC = Pod TV (podcasts and RSS feeds)
ZFJB5 = Pub-D-Hub (public domain films, TV and cartoons)
G8VAR = Re/Max
P1KWQ = Roksbox (media streamer)
IFUIN = Simple Weather
KGULU = USB Media Browser (movies/music/photos via the USB port)
IN4DN = Ustream
BPPIM = Woot
B8VVK = Youtube

I figure the *'d ones will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. Also, some of these codes look to be reduntant with channels already included in the default list of available.

LAST FIVE WOOTS:
04/12/13 Eye-Fi Mobile 8GB Wireless Memory Card - $35
03/01/13 Powerbag 3000mAh Charging Bag - $40
02/21/13 Canon Wireless AIO Printer - $50
02/21/13 3M HD Camcorder Projector - $80
11/10/12 Alaratec Charge-Glo 30-pin Sync Cable (x3) - $5 ea

Hmmm... I'm thinking it might be closer to impossible. After all...if you don't know about it... then you wouldn't know to add it.

Sorry, just busting your chops... couldn't help myself. Thanks for the private channel lineup. I was in the process of creating my own list but the timing of your post made my job a lot easier.

Now if my Roku would only arrive... [sigh]

So, this is my second Woot (not counting shirt.woot), and I haven't received any tracking emails and the FedEx site still shows nothing...

Seriously? I'm not one to comment (obviously), but once I saw how people were actually receiving theirs and I have yet to get a simple "hey we shipped yours, feel free to track" email, I found cause for concern.

This is me showing my concern.

Still waiting, oh Staff of WOOT; is the quote below true?

"...they ship the returned refurbished product out to those that haven't yet received one."

Is that what I'm waiting for? Someone to be dissatisfied with their purchase, maybe break it a little, send it back, and then have it sent out to me?

Gad, I hope that isn't true. Some reassurance from the staff would help calm my fears.

Received my Roku HD-XR yesterday- setup was simple and easy. Hooked up to a Panasonic 42" plasma (1080P) which has only 3 HDMI slots,2 back 1 front. Both back slots are being used so had to run cord to front slot. Also hooked up other connections for comparison of video quality: S-video and component.

I saw no visible difference between component and HDMI but was noticable using the S-video cable. Since I would rather not have the HDMI running around to front of TV I will opt for the component cables in back. I have 2 concerns however I noticed already with my box. While connecting the different cables and moving the box to do so I noticed that the picture display would flash on and off whenever the component cables were touched/adjusted. It seems that the connectors or wires may be loose internally, which is not good.

After cables were connected and box situated it seems to okay now, just hope it doesn't become a problem. Also not sure if it's related but sometimes unit would freeze on current screen and at main menu would not access any channels. Had to unplug power cord and reboot the unit to get it to work again.

Any body else have these issues yet? Will be keeping a close eye on this and using it often to see it reoccurs. If so, what are my options? I have never had to return anything I've gotten from Woot yet...

I got mine, after a few hiccups with the connection and a SLOW update I am up and running. I am still trying to find the best place to put it in my bedroom. The signal strength isn't the best for Netflix. Once it is loaded it is fine, it just loads slow. I'm glad I didn't just get the HD if the XR is having signal issues.
