I bought a Zune 4, Then I won a Zune 16, Then I acquired a Zune HD 16. I've never had any type of problem with any of them, and wouldn't be able to live without Zune Pass. The Software is amazing, works on XP x86 and Vista/Win7 x86 and x64. However, I have one thing to say.

If you bought a Zune HD for apps, you are a fool. It was never intended to be an "app device" like the iPod Touch is.

Smartphones have made stand-alone media things moot. That said, pick your poison. iTunes or Zune Media. I'd stick with a disposable player from Sansa or the likes.

How have they made them moot? They are still good for people that don't wanna waste their smartphone battery

I love Zune. I have a 120 (with the squircle). Here's the thing. If you are looking to get a media player, and you can pick ANY media player, I'd say to just save your bucks and get a Zune HD. It's really that much better than anything else, intuitive and just all-around otterific. I got a 32 for my son, and I'm so impressed with it, I'm considering getting a 16 for myself in addition to my 120.

Heh.. otterific? That's otterific.

I have had a Zune for a while, and the software is so far superior to Itunes in cost, there is no comparison.

Peripherals for an iPod? You mean like headphones, a charger, or amplified speakers, which all work on any media player? What else would you attach to one?

Just a general comment:

It seems that every time Woot offers something electronic, people complain that it's "cheap carp, made in China," or compare it to some other item that's "eww, from Hong Kong." What electronic item isn't made in China, or some other Asian country, these days?

There's cheap Asian carp, and there's high-quality Asian stuff too. So saying that something electronic is made in Asia is like saying a car uses wheels.

Well, almost. Here's a website with a few electronic products that are made in USA.

And don't get me started on the trade deficit...

edit: LOL - on that "made in USA" page I linked to, there's a link that says "Search Amazon for Electronics Made in USA." I clicked it and found a book, a DVD ("Crips and Bloods: Made in America"), and a shower curtain.

I highly recommend to anyone who purchases on of these, get the HD/AV dock for your television. This device isn't HD but the dock comes with an insert that will fit this player and sounds amazing through a good home stereo. Also, once you have this device and get used to the software and start enjoying the Zune Pass, you won't be able to stop yourself from getting a Zune HD. Trust me, I started off with a Zune 8 and now have my original 8 and two 32GB Zune HD's. And smart DJ is a wonderful feature of the software (and on the Zune HD device).

I disagree. I like a dedicated device for media. I tried the whole iPhone thing and found that I NEVER use my phone for media. Maybe I am biased though because I have a Zune HD and it absolutely destroys the iPod and the Zune software is great as well. I hate iTunes with the passion of 1,000 white hot suns.

LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one who washes my headphones on a regular basis. Everything about the Zune is durable. I have dropped all of my players (I have three) several times and they all still work fine. I once dropped my headphones outside by accident and when I found them several days later and after a huge rain, I simply brought them inside, cleaned them, and let them dry. They still sound great and work perfectly to this day.

Let me just say that I bought a 120GB Xbox 360 from them. It arrived in three days, new in the box and was a beautiful black, and not white and used like I expected. I bought a refurbished Ipod Touch from them that looked brand new and got the same great service. Just one man's experience....

actually its touch sensitive so you can swipe your finger along it (if you've turned it on in the settings) and if you swipe fast, the list will scroll fast and then decelerate over time.

Woot.com, shut up. haha. your snarky commentary is funny, as always, but this time you're hurting only yourself. Sure, the zune wasn't the first successful mp3 player, nor is it the most successful, but I've had both ipod and zune and enjoyed the zune a whole heckuva lot more. the interface is more colorful and friendly, it's easy to navigate and the touch pad works excellently. two thumbs up for zune. nearly everyone who i know that's owned one is a big fan.

Anyone know if i can get these repaired/replaced through MicroSoft?

You should have contacted Zune for the DOA one, they will repair/replace. Mine had issues at the beginning, and their support service is slow but they did send me a new replacement.

Heck, you can even get a credit card swiper for them or a SteadyCam for video recording. It's hard to beat the largest user base and a common form factor when it comes to the accessories market.

terminatorgir wrote:I agree that Zune trumps iPod, I owned both and was INFINITELY more happy with the Zune software and the Zune Pass which gives you unlimited music downloads(granted its a somewhat limited selection, but i still found 90% of what I wanted music-wise) and you get to keep 10 songs every month. Essentially you pay five bucks for unlimited rentals that never expire as long as you pay the 15$ monthly Zune Pass subscription. As far as actual hardware goes, Zune beats iPod barely, the only problem I have with iPod is that it won't play any video but .mov and .mp4, Zune plays .avi which is a necessity nowadays if you don't wanna convert every video you download. Also my iPod randomly skips to the next song on about 10 songs out of my 5500 on my iPod classic 5th gen.

Long story short, I got an 8gb version for 60 bucks from a pawn shop, I don't think this is worth it, its not great for watching video with such a small screen, such limited storage. I just can't see the justification of spending so much on it when you can get sansa's for music and much cheaper

8 gig model is on sellout woot for $89.99 which is not a pawn shop.

You're missing the point that I don't want to buy 234234 devices that do only one thing. I'd rather buy fewer, more expensive devices that do many things reasonably well. I'm also less inclined to buy a point and shoot camera or an eReader these days.

No, I cannot listen to 4GB of music in one day, but if it's a day I feel like switching from Zydeco to J-rock to 80's alternapop, and then watching the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother, I'll have to fiddle with loading and unloading to make room. I'd rather have my entire collection on one device, so I can switch to different music as I go.

I have a first gen 30G Zune (brown =)! and it is still going strong (even with a cracked screen) after nearly 4 years. I love it. I also had a ZuneHD which in almost every way is superior to the iPod Touch. Unfortunately it was stolen and I had to dig out my old one. If you love music the zune marketplace is great, for only $16 a month you get unlimited music for your collection and 10 permenant songs to keep each month even if you cancel the subscription.
