This would be the perfect Christmas gift for my 11 year old. Totally non-professional and featureless means it should be pretty easy for a kid to use.

Vizio 32” 720p LCD HDTV (2 of them), Seagate 750GB SATA/300 7200RPM Hard Drive, SiliconDust HDHomeRun Dual Digital HDTV Tuner, Kodak Theater HD Player, Acer Aspire One 10.1” Netbook, Philips Prestigo 8-Device Universal Remote, Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with 1.6GHz Atom Processor, Philips Upconverting DVD Player with DivX and HDMI, Ashley Rock Axe Full Size Rockband and Guitar Hero Controller for PS2 and PS3, Philips Icon 5 Device Universal Remote, and a bunch of other carp.

Can I just hook up the keyboard and play through the computer or do i have to use the protools software and USB sound adapter?

It's a midi controler, you'd need some sort of software, but not forced to use Pro Tools essentials...

I bought the keyboard a year ago or so and the software give you no option to install to a specific drive or location. It just automatically installs on the C: drive so if you plan on using an external drive for the large recording files (needed for the high quality settings), you may have some issues and work-arounds to cook up.

Also - the keyboard has no MIDI connection so if you are scheming to use this with Rock Band III it will not work. (My initial thought when hearing you can use any MIDI keyboard with RBIII).

I will say the quality of the keyboard instruments is pretty darn good - a few of the piano, electric piano, and orchestra instruments is very very good. Lots of good synth ones too.

I'd stick with E-MU midi keyboards, Creative knows their stuff. I also used to have an M-Audio USB recording interface, but it didn't work out well for me so I switched to a Presonus Firepod. I guess I'm not the biggest M-Audio fan, but maybe you will have better luck?

krk rp5's are much better than these as far as studio monitors go. That said, I bought a pair of brand new RP5's and an RP10S 10" sub from ebay for under $500.

I got the microphone last time around. I was never able to get it to work properly with Cool Edit. Could not monitor the audio while recording. It worked OK with M-audio's software which is a huge step down from Cool Edit.

wootski wrote:Does anybody know whether the USB recording box will record directly to a WMA or mp3 compressed format ?

It will record to whatever format you want, dependent on the capabilities of the software with which you use it. Any recording software (Reason, Cakewalk, Audition, Audacity, FLStudio) worth its salt will allow you to route in a recording interface such as this and save the recordings to a variety of formats. The format to which you record is totally independent of this interface; it depends entirely on the software.

On that note, I got the Fast Track USB last time it was on here, and it is definitely the best I've ever had. I've tried interfaces from Creative, Echo, Lexicon and another maker that I can't remember, and this box is my favorite. It gives me zero-latency recording with no hiccups, works flawlessly with FLStudio, doesn't take over my audio outputs, and lets me record two tracks at once. I highly recommend it.

I also have the M-Audio Oxygen8 keyboard, which is a little brother to the keyboard for sale. It is also a top-knotch product. Just like the Fast Track box, it integrates flawlessly and gives me no trouble whatsoever. If the bigger keyboard is anything like the Oxygen8, I would jump on it.

I don't understand what is being sold. is each item $59. I want a keyboard that will connect to an apple or pc and record what the keyboard generates as an mp3 or midi, I guess.

mop wrote:Does anyone have experience using the mic to record acoustic guitar in addition to vocals?

Purchased this last time that it was available.

Using a fairly crappy acoustic, I just plugged this mic into garage band and sat a bit away, and started recording. I sounded surprisingly good, and when I eq'd the track it sounded even better.

So I can verify - microphone and usb interface both work with garage band.

I have protools essentials installed on my Windows XP laptop, and let me just say this straight out - the drivers for the USB interface included on the CD will probably not work for you, and you'll need to go to m-audio's website to download up-to-date drivers.

It does work well, though, and I've just started bouncing my guitar tracks over to my brother who lives a state over to record bass tracks on and then my friend who lives a few blocks away to record lead guitar on. A convenient solution for the musician on a budget.

Would this keyboard be any good for an amateur pianist? I want to stress the 'amateur' part there. Right now I have a keyboard about the same size but the keys have no velocity, which is very frustrating when you're trying to express music.

I know this one has velocity - I guess what I'm asking is, any pianists in here, would you recommend that this be used for learning or should I hold out for a full-size weighted keyboard?

In non-musician speak, "velocity" means when you barely touch the key, it's really soft, and when you wham down on it, it's really loud (basically). On my keyboard, it's the same level no matter what.

I bought the keyboard. It SUCKS.

Too much lag between hitting a key and hearing feedback, as well as it has to be plugged in to your computer with the software running to work.

Totally depends on what your plugging it into. The lag is due to a slow computer or crappy software.

Pro Tools supports AIFF and Wave but not WMA. Digidesign sells additional software that let's Pro Tools support MP3 natively. A cheaper solution is to mix down the session as a Stereo Wave file, then import the file into iTunes to create an MP3 version for free.

i'm thinking about buying the Keystudio as a gift for someone who mentioned wanting a keyboard to write music. i dunno squat about pro tools, so i'm wondering - can this only be used / heard while hooked up to the computer? do u need to buy the Protools Recording Studio too in order to actually do anything with what you play on the keyboard? enlighten me wooters!

As long as your friend's computer meets the min specs, you don't need anything else... You'll be able to hear and record what your playing with the included software.

This is a MIDI controller, not a keyboard, so yes, it has to be hooked up to a computer to produce sound.

If you're/they're looking for a traditional keyboard to learn the piano or just tool around or play in the living room etc, this is not what you want.

P.S. In for the speakers.

Wait... what?

I bought the speakers last time they were up and you can't beat the sound quality for $59. Real wood cabinet, not plastic like the other guys. I am trying to decide between the mixing board or the keyboard. For this price I may have to double down!

The microphone cable terminates in a USB plug. So, it cannot be used with the Fastrack interface, which lacks a USB in. Not a showstopper, as both pieces are useful on their own. But if you are thinking of using them together, be aware.

Total load of crap. ProTools is the industry standard recording software, and even with this lower tier interface, the price can't be beat. This is an amazing deal, and if you haven't figured out how to use ProTools don't bash it.

Yes, it will. It's what I use it for. Great product. Be advised, however, that last I checked the Win7 64 drivers were not up to snuff. Too much latency. I ended up having to use the interface on Windows XP 32-bit, and it's great.

wootski wrote:Does anybody know whether the USB recording box will record directly to a WMA or mp3 compressed format ? I expect it does wav only.
wav is good quallity but big files. I use a Creative USB recording unit similar to this and often record XM radio shows with it. I really like to record directly to 320 kbs wma directly.
small files and decent quality for radio.
I went to m-audio for the info and could not find it.
Note at this web address:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.bundled&ID=50a10130480a3cd3635e77ed72c233ce they state the recording software does not work with Win XP media center edition.

Good price for all this stuff.

The USB interface is just that: an interface. The format you record to with it depends on the software you are using. For example, if you used Windows Sound Recorder, you would get WAV as an output. Protools records in it's proprietary format, but you can mix down and master to WAV. I then use VLC to convert to mp3.
