SD cards that can send what's on them over wi-fi to your network.

I hope you are right. All I know is that there are so many products on the market these days that should have never been released, and the consumer is left with some thing that doesn't work properly due to people not doing their jobs. It is a pet peeve of mine given our unemployment situation in this country. I sit here day after day unemployed, wooting, and spending money while my job has been taken over by a certain group of people (H1B's) who have been brought to this country to work for cheaper wages and, quite frankly, end up producing inferior products for the consumer. And even though this product is not new to Sanyo, companies continue to make the decision to go with cheaper labor which ends up producing inferior products. So the trend is not always up, and I would say that I have seen a downward trend in quality lately.

How is the quality of stills? Especially in low light? Can it take the place of a pocket digital camera?

I am in for 2! I have scoured the Internet (including the Sanyo site) and cannot find a case for this little camera. Anyone know where to find a case? Thanks!

Hmm, this seems to be on Amazon for the exact same price, but with free shipping, so why Woot???

I haven't used them... just did a search on them after someone else recommended them here. The price is a bit higher than regular cards, and they don't seem to come in Class 10, which is what I got in order for it to be fast enough to pull in 1080p.

So.. I don't know

No, when connected to the computer it only lets you access the memory card.

Of course it charges too...

Hi, it's definitely more of a video camera than a still camera. For example there are no settings for scenes, shutter speed, or macro. It takes good images in reasonable light. You can turn on and off the flash and select the image size.

I got it for the video capabilities with the option to take reasonable pictures. It does that well for me.

On a side note it talks - "battery is low" and stuff like that...

So the closest you can do to have continuous recording is
a) power it w/ Sanyo DC adaptor VAR-A3 for DB-L80, and
b) quickly swap out the SD card?

editorkid wrote:Sorry to say, but I hope that wasn't one of the 1,000, NG -- I use my zi8 with my Macs all the time.

About your earlier comments discussing the diminishing returns of megapixels, that's very true, but much of it has to do with the sensor size, which is amazingly tiny on these devices. With these sensors, you just can't capture much light at all, and so these don't perform well in dark situations. In still cameras, ISO measures the ability to handle a range of light to dark environments, mitigated to some extent by the camera's ability to change shutter speeds. The sensors are analogue devices, so a reading at 1/60 second will be significantly more accurate than one at 1/500 second. These digital recorders are locked into tiny sensors and 1/30 or 1/60 exposures, and while good firmware can give them a hand, they'll never really be high-quality. But it is true that different companies optimize their cameras for different situations, and some will handle dark areas better than others.

Do you have any jitter on the transferred video? Two of the reviews I read said that you must use Kodak's software to transfer the video jitter-free, but the software doesn't run on a Mac.

(I didn't link to any of the reviews I read since they're off-topic)

Doesn't really matter, the money all goes to Amazon.

What matters is that we are used to getting a significant discount on Woot (even for new items). But, it is up to us to hit the buy button or not.

This might be too early of a question to ask since the product is still so new, but would anyone know how this camera would perform under water?

I would love to get this for my Hawaii trip next month, and could get one of those waterproof digi pacs for this camera but I wonder how the quality of the videos and pictures are under water. Any info/advice is appreciated!

No zoom? Huh? you mean not enough zoom for ya?
I read the whoooole blog and researched all afternoon. If this holds up (I hope) over use it's a good deal except for no mic input ( but those are rare ). I drank the Kool Aid and just ordered one. I'm sticking it on a mono pod.

It's on Sanyo's website:

http://sanyo.com/xacti/english/products/vpc_pd1/spec.html

• When continuous recording time exceeds approximately 13 hours for audio, the file will be saved, and the subsequent data will be saved in a new file. Similarly, when the recording file size exceeds 4 GB, the file will be saved and subsequent data will be saved in a new file. (A new file is automatically created for every 4 GB. Although recording will continue until stopped, recording of video clips and sound will stop while files are being saved.)

The 4GB limit is what's causing the 30 min clips.

I was almost in for one, but I'd pay less and get it faster if I buy it through Amazon. The base price is the same, but 2-day shipping is free if you're a Prime member.

I don't know if this is enough to make the decision for you, but it is actually 99 cents cheaper at Amazon.

Interesting. Do you think that's a FAT32 issue, or a Sanyo "feature"?

Hi! - It would be a total loss! It's not water proof at all - ummmm totally not water proof! - Sorry - Like my Sanyo but it's not H20 friendly! (ok with me I have my Tachyon XC Micro which goes 100 feet under water) - no sound of course! Hope this helps -

Fair enough, but please note it has two external mics located to the left and right of the image sensor. I was skeptical at first but after using it I was totally pleased.... it captures the sound in front and behind (me speaking well) - it's in stereo

4GB is the maximum file size permitted with FAT32. The current generation of camcorders only support FAT32. It's not a Sanyo feature, it's a limitation placed on virtually all camcorders.
