Step 1: Download whatever it is you want to watch from a site that rhymes with borrent.

It may be hard to believe, but not everyone likes to steal content.
That said, this does seem like a huge waste of money and hassle.

I suppose you could...but not even people in Cleveland want to watch Cleveland sports teams.

the slingbox throws your tv signal at home to your laptop anywhere you can get an internet connection....there are certain phone devices that also have the software to watch your home tv on as well

I currently have a DVR in my main room and two other boxes in others rooms of my house that control my DVR. I pay Fios (now Frontier) for every additional box. Does this have the capability to eliminate one or both of these while still using the TVs I have in the other rooms. I know I could use my PC and watch but can I hook this up to another TV in another room and eliminate those extra connections?

My hubby bought me a slingbox SOLO for a gift a while ago and I have never been able to get it to work. I called the company but they were not helpful. Any good helpful websites out there that I can go to, to get it up and running?
Thanks

Does this have to be connected to a TV? Or will it function with just the cable plugged in and connected to the internet. I would love to set one up back at my parent's house but they don't have an extra TV to hook it up to.

FYI for anyone that is buying this to stream to an Android device, the app is 30 bucks, so add that to the total. I'm not positive, but I think the iphone app is the same price.

If you dont want to spend the money on this piece or garbage, just buy a tv tuner for your computer. Any tuner will do, but I recommend Hauppauge devices. I bought my Hauppauge 950q for 60 bucks, and it does all analog channels like the Sling, and does the network HD channels.

Download software for your computer called Orb, its free and works great. Does the same thing Sling does, streams it over the internet. Works just as good, and there is no 30 dollar app required, you just login to their site and you are connected to your computer immediately. You can watch any live tv channel, watch any recording, music, photos, and you can even set recordings.

Much better way to go than Sling's overpriced stuff.

No tv required, just plug into a source.

The Slingbox allows you to watch shows from your DVR as well....there is no fee required for Windows PC software.

I bought a Slingbox SOLO earlier this year, and it is the best piece of technology I have ever, ever purchased. (Other than my iPhone.)

I Sling my cable connection to my iPhone every day (still have unlimited data, which you'll need, streaming uses 150-200MB an hour), and tote one of my netbooks in the kitchen to flip on the Phillies game while getting dinner ready. It was neat to go on a beach vacation earlier this year and be able to watch my home sports games and news whenever I wanted.

I have my Slingbox sitting in the basement, utilizing an unused cable connection so that it doesn't interfere with my other TVs. It's hooked into an old VCR that is strictly used as a TV tuner, and into the VCR I have one of those Comcast DTA boxes that is required in my area. I set up the software to control the Comcast DTA box directly - as far as I'm aware, there isn't a setting for the DTA box in Slingbox Setup, but I made it work with another type of Motorola remote. I don't have it hooked into an HD connection right now but I've seen HD video piped through a Slingbox, and it looks otterific, even on the iPhone.

I don't have the SlingLink TURBO, but for the total price here, it's an amazing deal. Amazon has the SOLO by itself for $150 on a good day, and Best Buy sells it for $190.

Ok, my situation is this: I'm getting a new housemate who wants cable in her room but there's no line run in there. Would this be a solution to that problem, instead of having to run cable and get an additional cable box?

At the moment, there are nether cable nor internet connections in that room.

These are all valid points, but if you only run laptops at your home and don't have a spare tower to set up as a media center, the Slingbox makes an excellent option...and a lot cheaper.

RPMS wrote:Slingbox Solos have a history of going down because of bad capacitors. If you're good with a soldering iron, ffour bucks worth of components, and you're back in action. (I repaired my 18 month old refurbed Slingbox last weekend and brought it back to life.) If you're not handy, Slingbox's customer service is okay as long as the warranty lasts. After that, its teh suck. You have to pony up $30 just to get them to listen to your complaint.

We got rid of our TV and used the slingbox solo from last summer's Woot to watch TV on the laptop. Was pretty otterific setup until the capacitor issue started in May and we had a new baby and didn't figure out the problem until July when the warranty was up.

We have a friend handy with soldering iron who's going to help this week, hopefully, but we upgraded to HD cable, and need to upgrade the slingbox also, since the Solo doesn't do HD.

We loved it until the hardware problems.

Once you are using "borrent" there is no need to purchase a television. Just break into somebody else's house and take theirs.

I want one of these again but last time i bought one(4 years ago), Cablevision limited my bandwidth and put a strike against my account saying i was hogging too much bandwidth and that was against the TOS. Is there anyone with Optimum Online is able to use this without being limited?

If everyone is so worried about the capacitors why not get one of those online warranties that woot is peddling sometimes. What is the name of that company? Seems like a safe bet to me in that case.

I was just thinking about doing this last night before the woot deal hit. I moved to Dallas and I need to be able to watch the Chiefs, since this year the Cowboys suck...

I've read a bunch of the posts but I still don't totally get it. Sorry for being so dense.

In order to use ethernet via powerlines, wouldn't I need two of the SlingLinks? What good does it do for me to have just one SlingLink? Can these two work together in some meaningful way?

I've got this model and it works great. It took a little bit of effort to configure my network for it, but once it's done -- I've never had any problems with it. The 'streaming HD' is a little far-fetched unless you're watching it on a laptop or whatnot while connected to the same network. Otherwise your video quality is dependent on your upload/download speeds respectively. I've got the sling mobile app on my Iphone and it works very well though, even when I'm not on 3G.

Yes, it's called slinger and it's found here:

hxxp://www.benlo.com/slingbox/

make sure you have plenty of harddrive space.

I use the slinger like a tivo b/c you can watch the recorded parts at the same time it's recording that show. So you can "catch up" to time it ends live.

It can control two devices and can be configured for thousands of different devices to remote control use/view.

I've had slingbox for over 3 yrs and use it on blackberry phone too. It's otterific.

There is a live 1 hour buffer that you can use. I have not been able to find a way to record the programming on my computer.

The best way to receive it is through a computer (I use HDMI out on my laptop to the TV and the quality is tolerable, but I only do it for football games that are out of my market (Stupid MWC tv deal)so I have my slingbox in Utah, and I watch the games in Minnesota.) You can also get the sling on iphone or android.

It takes some fiddling on your router/firewall. You need to open some ports for it to get through. I wouldn't say a blind monkey.. perhaps a monkey with a high school diploma and a basic understanding of the keyboard.

I have the cheap Sony knock off of slingbox (Locationfree). Picked it up for $50.00. Got it hooked up in Illinois and I get to watch home town cable from Italy and Afghanistan. Works on my PSP and XP machine. It's a decent cheap alternative to slingbox, but not as good of picture quality, and ten times more difficult to setup. I wish they would make it work on PS3, but not yet.

This is a rather complex and expensive solution if that's all you want to do with it, but it will work. The network bridge allows you to transmit the streamed signal though house wiring, so you could send it to your housemate through that. Note that you need a router for the bridge.

You'll also have internet streaming capability if you ever want it.

These things won't link up to your TV while you're in the air. These don't display in HD. You don't need them to hook up to your game system, because you can just hook your game system into your existing network and run Media Center through it, or else transfer video files onto a flash drive and plug it into your PS3. The only thing they really do is allow you to watch video on your phone, which I never do. Why? Because it's my phone and the screen is tiny.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting on over 80 hours of shows and movies I've never seen on my laptop at all times.

Think about this I can watch live TV events such as sports, concerts, on demand, cable premium channels, local news and my cable stb's DVR. You say I can't watch this in the air? Ummm...I was just on Airtran last month streaming over their in flight Wifi so it's quite obvious you need to catch up with the new tech.
