Supports "up to" 3 lbs, according to other sites. In other words, not for dSLRs.

You screw your camera into it on the tripod socket. extend the legs to the proper height and shoot. Keeps you from moving the camera up and down to min. blur. Still allows you to move left and right and tilt.
Also good for camcorders to get a steadier shot. Compact the mono pod and hold it with your fist. Press record and you can move around better than just holding the camcorder.

I was just looking for one of these... price is good, but it's a little too short for me. Others go up to 67" or 72" This one does folds down to a more compact size than most others as well. This will be fine if you're like 5'9" or shorter!

bought 3 last time and have to admit - too small for photography and forget if using for video. Just not steady enough.

from Amazon review
Small and compact but it has problems with the internal plastic rings breaking which allow the legs to remain secure during use. I took back my first one after a month only to have the same problem occur with the second one. I contacted Sunpak to send me out the parts that broke, it took 3 weeks but at least I receive them. Sunpak customer service was extremely nice, but I've made it a point to keep their number handy as I know I'll have to replace the parts again.

And I was excited.

In for one, the difference between a cheap monopod and a cheap tripod is with the monopod, you still have your hands on the camera. Whereas with the tripod, you are relying entirely on the strength and build quality to hold up your expensive equipment.

I have a compact monopod but no one ever put flashing lights around it and I have never had any women willing to pay $10 for the pleasure of expanding it...

You either hold it or find something stable that can hold it for you.

Monopods are pretty handy given the right scenario. For example, most tripods are a poor solution when you're in a confined area - that's where a monopod comes in.

If it'd been a bagpipe chanter, I'd have bought three! Those make excellent Christmas gifts.

So this is essentially a tripod...that you have to hold steady to use.

I have to ask - what's the point???

A monopod can be useful in some situations, though typically you can just fold the legs in on a tripod for a similar effect. : )
