Monopods are great. You don't know how much you need one until you use one. Tripods are generally unnecessary so well as clumsy and inconvenient. Most anyone who _needs_ a tripod also needs a monopod. With exceptions, tripods are more for the studio while monopods are better suited in the field. They are excellent for amateurs, especially tourists.

That said, I have read poor review about this particular monopod stating it to be cheaply made.

Ouch, that kills it for me. I'd want it at my kid's soccer matches for my Alpha 200 with the big zoom lens.

It's a monopod. It's not what they support, it's what they stabilize. If you leave your DSLR sitting atop a monopod, you're screwed regardless

Just a note on use:
These are very useful for SLRs with long telephoto lenses. They support the weight of the lens and camera, and steady the rig so you can actually focus on your subject and not get seasick.

That having been said, these appear not well made and (supporting only 3 lbs) are kind of a questionable buy.

I'm going to half-disagree with you there but only because there are trekking poles that also function as monopods now . . . may as well combine them as an always ready monopod that can't be used as a walking stick would be an inconvenience. Obviously, it depends on what you're doing.

I'm trying to. Just haven't spotted the stuff on the Christmas list yet. No need for headphones, knives, or vacuums. But I am working on it... Since I am here... and a bunch of people keep bringing up the Bucket of Candy... I'm kind of excited. I sincerely apologize if that ruffles your wooted sensibilities.
