Thanks NightGhost. I'm not real sure what he's using either. I know it looks like a thumb drive, only slightly larger. That ... and that he used a CD to install ... of which I had to make an ISO of when his CD drive quit working.

I don't know about the other components, but I have the same processor on my htc build paired with a 20 dollar ati 4550 gpu and 4 gigs of ram.

It is a pretty decent processor, Frys electronics in CA has tons of deal with this specific processor (Amd 240) with various motherboards for only 50 bucks or lower.

Performance wise, this computer in this default configuration with this cpu should be pretty fast to non technical users. You will be able to multitask easily with power to spare with the exception of gaming. Things like watching 720 HD video will be no prob. However, watching 1080p video almost always need GPU acceleration thus a graphics card upgrade(look for sales, 20-30 graphics card are on sale all time).

For desktops, nowadays it is pretty common to find quad cores. However, while this is only a dual core, it strength is that each dual core has a high frequency.

And if you are professional, then you don't any advice on what to buy anyways and this machine is probably not for you.

For you gamers out there on a budget, my stock setup with the AMD 240 with a budget 20 dollar ATI 4550 gpu was fast enough to play Starcraft 2 2v2 mulitplayer at low to medium detail at 720 p resolution without any noticeable hiccup.

So if you could spend 20-30 dollars and get a budget graphics card, you should experience similar performance for gaming that I mentioned earlier. Emphasis on "budget" cards b/c you will be restricted on what you fit inside this slim case. Measure before buying the any upgrades especially graphics cards.

NightGhost wrote:FWIW, it has a 220w power supply.

Yes small but I'm in for 1 as a gift for a very basic computer user.

Why does HP usually have such small power supplies?

Today's computers should never be under 500 watt power supply's, most should be close to or at 1000 watts incase you want to throw in another video card or do other things. So the difference between 220 and 300 watts doesn't mean much to me for the person I bought it for. A very light computer user who's first computer is quite screwed up and not usable. Between Win 7 Prem, 3 gigs of RAM, the processor and more, I couldn't purchase these components and have some build it for this price. I could always buy a larger power supply from www.dslreports.com hot deals/members selling to members site for probably $25 to $35.

In June, I bought the bolded computer below as a Father's Day Gift for $20 less. It runs beautifully, was never used although it said refurb'd and is the quietest of 8 computers in this home and works like a charm wireless on Verizon FiOS consistent speed.

eMachines Intel Dual Core Desktop PC
You ordered 1 eMachines ET1831-07 Intel Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 750GB SATA, Windows 7 Home Prem 64.

So I'm in for one, already purchased and have one holiday gift taken care of. For $325 and the person I bought it for who is a light computer user, I doubt I'll have any regrets. Now to decide if I should get the extra warranty always offered.

Seriously. I hope it doesn't sell out while you sleep on it. We never know how many they have and how many people will buy with the holidays coming up.

I've been computer tower shopping for a week for this gift purchase I made an hour ago, there is nothing near this price anywhere even with Dell coupon codes. I'm not a Dell fan for years, they're putting crap components in to keep their prices down.

This works for who I bought this for so I'm happy. Happy shopping or wooting, whatever comes first.

Note: to my earlier comment. If you looking for budget graphics card to watch 1080p videos. Here are some graphics cards quickly dug up.

1st one....18 bucks after rebates, excluding tax

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127436&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10440897&PID=404255&SID=163863

2nd one....30 bucks after rebates, excluding tax

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150469&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10440897&PID=404255&SID=163834

I would personally get the second one. It will play blueray or 1080p video no probs and will allow for light gaming if that is your thing.

Just to let you guys know, I purchased 3 of those Gateway systems with the HDMI out for like 289.00 each. Those 3 systems rock for the price, Im going to buy this one because I never had any problems with Hp... Don't care for HDMI on this system, don't really have any need for it. This system will be a spare for World of Warcraft and Diablo 3

I got a simular system recently - it as and is my first BOUGHT computer.

and my last.

Everything i ever feared is here.

But thats beside the point.

if you do not build these might be the way to go for you, personally i will build every suystem after this. it was a gift so how could say no?

and its not a HP. Its a dell but i a thinking it's pretty much the exact same thing.

here is my advice. The Memory you get with this is DOO DOO> get 8 gigs or you will be unhappy if you have any kind of software such as CS5. even regular tasks suck with just 3gigs and teh company knows it.

Oh yeah

64 bit also allows you to set almost all your old software in a cabinet and get new stuff.

barely anything from 32 bit will xp pro will work.

so get ready for that.

The Board will NOT allow me to dissable the onboard video. even if i put a card in - the onboard still takes up memory. no way to dissable it. Funny hu?

it's rediculous. I think they thought no one would ever look.

I am not useing the word "simple" in a good way here. really.. the Bios is horrible.

it's for very simple people. i have thought of upgrading the motherboard - LOL. will befunny though because a company macheien anymore after that. It will just be me cramming my choice board in this damned case. hardley seems worth the money after that. i could upgrade the mother board - and the case. oh Look I have two systems now! LOL

see what I mean?

Bad experience so far with HP. Bought a refurb on woot a month ago. PC was suppose to have a 1 TB hard drive but came with a 700mb drive. Didn't have a wireless card or extended antenna like it was suppose to have. So far I have been unable to get them to correct the problem and the support person said that HP didn't warrant their refurb units. Buyer beware. This is no reflection on woot.com--it is an HP lack of support problem.

this sounds like an absolutely great deal, however i would probably get more ram for it and then i would get a better video card for it of course now I would need a bigger power supply, motherboard and cpu to allow the new video card to not get bogged down and a new case so that it would fit, and now that i could actually run some new games i think a bigger faster hard drive makes sense, but other than those few modifications, superb deal!!!!

Do you really need a new motherboard and cpu to have the new video card work properly? I can see the power supply and case for the size of it, not the other 2.

This is my first personal woot although my long-time S/O, has a hell of alot of our money spent at Woot. She's nearing 200 Woots so I trust her choice of woot for a good deal.

If the HP wesite wasn't out of stock I might have bought it there for only $399. But then there's shipping and tax and this is $80 less besides that. I didn't need links to find www.hp.com. I bought the HP ENVY 100 e-All-in-One--D410a there earlier this week.

So. I bought my first woot solo. It's an XMAS gift to go with the ENVY.

Long story short - I love the specs on my HP laptop [DV4-1222nr]. What I paid 2 years ago is almost the indentical specs today at the same price [CPU/Memory]. Unfort., HP admits to heat problems with the laptop and STILL won't support it. Oh well.

I would be hard pressed to buy another HP solely based on their lack of support for the machine.

Buy THIS Woot deal? NO WAY! I agree with previous post implication to just build one.

I bought this exact computer for my kids playroom from buy.com earlier this year...with discounts I only paid $249.

For what my kids use it for, playing fairly simple games, browsing the internet, and some homework...it works GREAT.

It's quiet and after 6 months of the kids banging on it I've had zero problems.

Definitely not a pc for the heavy gamers.

Cons:
-No built in speakers, but for $10 you can buy a cheap set of external speakers.
-No wireless card, only ethernet connection. But again, for $20 from Target I purchased a USB wireless adapter and it works great.

I would recommend this again for younger kids, internet surfers, MS Office users etc.

I have had more problems with my HP Pavilion Computer than ANY I have ever owned. My current unit crashes (blue screen) regularly and I'm just hoping it will survive until Black Friday when I can replace it. It is on a very regular back-up protocol. I was hoping they'd put another brand up here but all we ever see is the refurbished HP units. (Notice the glut of re-worked HP units to get a clue on quality.) Skip this one.

This should be more than enough to stream Netflix and other online media.

If you have Wifi (wireless internet) all you will need is a wireless card or a wireless USB stick. I suggest the wireless USB stick if you don't have a lot of computer knowledge.

It doesn't "need" an HDMI connection if you have an HDTV with a "PC" in connection (Usually DVI or VGA..typically VGA on newer models for convenience)

If your TV has DVI then a VGA to DVI adapter can be bought online for VERY little.

You'd be better off getting a Wii if all you want to do is stream Netflix. The Wii comes with wifi, and as a bonus, you can play Wii games!

There's no HD with the Wii, but this only has VGA, so you wont' be getting an HDMI signal with it either. This also doesn't have wifi, so you'd need to buy a wifi adapter for it.

If you really need an HD signal, even an xbox360 would be better. You can get an HD signal from it, it's got builtin wifi, and again, you can play Xbox games on it.

Owned one of these, new, and the power supply fried within 2 years, and I trashed it (sold some of the parts first). It was always loud, making strange noises, and finally it just melted down (I could smell it burning after it crapped out). Underpowered or something wrong with cooling system in my view (check HP Slimline on google). I agree on getting the emachines alternative, NIB at BB for $392, runs whisper quiet, and to me, so far, a better deal. No more HP for me, as I have had durability issues with their laptops and now their slimline PC.
