Anyone know what differentiates the various types and generations and methods of NV from each other? Is there a good explanation somewhere?

Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_vision

For a nice breakdown of different NV technologies.

You have Gen 1 which is basically toys, to Gen 6.

Gen 6 naturally not available to general public, military only.

Gen 3 is about the most top of the line civilians can purchase.

I bought one when Woot last had it for sale. I used it on Halloween to see if kids were come down the street. I could see people and make out some detail, but there was some light from the street lights and other houses.

You can find some 3+/4 out there, but they are really expensive (last I looked was something like $5k for one without zoom)... Not to mention hard to find...

Nope, have no requirement for a gen 3 device. Mine helps me canvass my land and areas of concern quite well. I have a few hot spots to keep a concerned eye on. It serves us well.

None, just a bucnh of gen 3 usage. All gen 1 will get you is a blury immage. Do a search I'm sure you can find a ton of pictures displaying image quality.

Fair enough. My experiences with Gen 1 devices was that they are all but useless for anything but general observation. A Gen 3 image is so much crisper and cleaner that it makes Gen 1 seem pointless...

Just so everyone understands, this is digital night vision. (i.e. basically a night vision camcorder with no tape and only a single viewfinder.)

There isn't a night vision tube in there. For something similar, search the net for the children's toy "Eyeclops".

If this thing had a way to plug it in rather than use batteries, I'd get it and upgrade my homemade security cam pointing at the front door. It's just a webcam pointed at the front door with a little app that triggers video out when a certain % of pixels change. Cool for seeing someone walking up to the door and having them wonder how you always open it before they knock ;)

It sens out IR so that'd be a 2nd gen. 1st gen only receives IR and has no send unit. Though to be fair this isn't exactly military grade, but hopefully your life won't depend on it either.

Based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_vision_device I'd say it's generation 0 imaging. It uses IR light for illumination. Night vision that doesn't require a light source doesn't come cheap.

It's been years (I think before you joined IIRC) since they started doing this. The VERY early Woot-Offs were indeed cheaper stuff, but it's been pretty expensive and higher class for a while (well for most stuff anyway)...

Nope. The generation refers to the type of image intensifier tube inside (which this likely doesn't have one anyway). The fact that it has an illuminater doesn't make a difference to the generation...
