I love flipshare it makes it so I click a few times, and boom FBOOK youtube wherever I want it.

Software can make or break these camera's, especially when they capturing specs are almost identical.

I was curious if the light would function as a sustained light for video or if it just does flash for photos. I suspect only flash.

The bad thing about product launches is that there are no reviews, so I have no way of doing my homework. I looked up the Sylvania Pro HD sold by QVC and it has some really mixed reviews. I suspect that this product will produce similar comments, since it is made by the same manufacturer.

Got one for each of my kids. Even if it sucks, its cheaper than Everything at Target, Walmart, and ToysRUS

You're right on the money with both. My Droid phone is 8 mp and it's over kill. 780p TV's are fine up to at least 42 in. if not 47 in.

My brand new 52 in or my almost 2 yr old 55 in. LCD TV's won't be used for these so I'm not worried.

Launch event? I thought it was a little penguin with the turtlehead.

In for two. Christmas gifts for my nephews. They better get here by christmas. This is also my first product launch purchase.
I already have a Flip UltraHD im pretty happy with it.
I aslo have a Sylvania 32"LCD TV (it was dirt cheap) that's been working flawlessly for over a year (knocks on wood) so Im not too scared about the brand.
I would be running for the hills if these were made by coby.

I bought this for my son for Christmas. He is 9. This camera is so horrible that I am going to be looking for a different present for him. The picture quality is probably poorer than his Fisher Price camera that I bought him when he was 5. Looking at the quality of this camera makes me want to never buy a Sylvania product again.

It looks like a cell phone. Could you possibly get out of talking to people by putting this up to your ear and faking a conversation?

the difference between 720p and 1080p on a decent screen even a small screen (mine is a 24" pc CRT monitor that does over 1080p)

the issue is that most 1080p camcorders do 1080p in NAME ONLY. ie the "bitrate" of the1080p video is usually the same as or marginally higher than the 720p video.

so of course your not going to see much difference in fact the 720p SHOULD look better since you have more "bits per frame" than at 1080p where those same bits get stretched further.

once we have REAL 1080p it will be a whole nother ball game.

but these cams do a really decent job in good lighting at making good watchable 720p video.

As long as the file format is in .avi, you don't need any software. I have a flip and I still upload all my videos through youtube itself, not any separate app.

This is actually nicer than the flip HD models. This seems to have a HDMI port as opposed to a mini HDMI. That's a 10 dollar difference in the cable you have to buy.

Converting HD video to non HD can be a cumbersome task. It took me 2-3 hours to put 1 hour of footage on a DVD, so if you think you'll be making DVDs, perhaps looking for a camcorder that has the option of recording in SD and HD is the choice for you.

sure the JVC FM1 is $50 or $60 at Big Lots (clearance)

GREAT camera. does 720p and cropped 1080p

is smaller. has built in battery so nothing to joggle loose when I kick it at 30g's on lift off :-) (the kidak ZX1's all turn off at around 25g's as the battery contacts disconnect momentarily under the G load (AA's)

there is also always used on craigslist :-)

$40 is good but not "wow out of this world good especially for a completely "unknown"

I dont trust reviews for items like this, a lot of people who post these reviews don't know there way around a computer, and get frustarted and blame the device. Looks like a good unit at a pretty decent price to me.

Seems Sylvania tried their hand at a 720p handheld camera more than once before as noted above. The "Sylvania E165911" via QVC: Reviews on THAT model here.

Hope this one pans out to be much better.

The specs are actually pretty impressive, when compared to other such cameras, especially at this price.

PROS:
- HDMI output
- 4x digital zoom - okay, I admit that digit I zoom is pretty much useless, but still, most such cameras only have 2x zoom
- SD card expansion slot - this allows expandability on the fly and it makes a easier to transfer files without having to plug the thing into a USB port. You can also plug an SD card into one of the photo Kiosk to print photos. Camera is SDHC compatible. Neither the Flip nor Vado use SD cards.
- Still camera - this Comes in handy even if the quality is bad. I've used the photo mode on My zi6 to capture phone numbers on posters when I didn't have a pen. My mom also used it to Send a photo of a rash to her doctor when she was on Vacation. The Flip and Vado Makes you do Screen Captures of videos if you want photos. Very tedious and requires a computer.
- Built-in light to capture photos - Wow, now that's a feature I haven't Seen before!

CON:
- retractable USB arm - HATE these! They break easily and makes it hard to attach to k desktop and Some laptops unless there is room. A USB extension cord is usually required. The Vado uses a flexible built-in cord, which is a much better idea.

Overall, I'm impressed enough to buy one, even though this is probably some generic Chinese device with the Sylvania name tacked on. The instructions will be a dead giveaway. I'll compare it to my Flip (hate it!), Vado, Kodak Zi6 and RCA Small Wonder. My guess is that although the specs are impressive, the execution probably sucks, especially the interface.

You have a point, many reviewers don't know squat, and in this case the number of reviews is limited. That being said, I'd rather spend a little more on a known quantity than potentially waste this much on what is really a complete unknown. If the manufacturer had a reputation for quality stuff, I'd take the risk on a new model, but here you're getting a third rate brand and a new model with little feedback out there from the real world. Perhaps not a bad buy, and if they turn out to be good units, great. Not quite compelling enough for me to buy, although tempting. Too much of a total risk for me when I have other things to spend the money on that are more of a sure thing. I see the appeal here, though, and good luck to those taking the leap tonight. You may have a good buy. Good job, Woot, on finally bringing something out that is interesting. Ultimately, to me this is half the price of something I really want, like an Apple TV or something, so can't quite make myself click the buy button.

AVI is a big plus for the Windows folks. The biggest mistake Kodak made was to choose MOV as their container format. Not only is it un-editable by any free or cheap Windows software, but you also can't play it in digital photo frames, DVD players and most MP3 players (unless they're made by Apple or Kodak). AVI is MUCH more universal.

Not thrilled by MJPEG though because it's very inefficient.

I really know this pain. My Panasonic DMC-FZ50 does MOV. Luckily I use Premiere Pro so I can handle it. But yes, MOV SUCKS for Windows. I just bought this camera after lately having needed a camera. My Evo 4G isn't good enough and neither is my camera. Only does 480p and the quality is subpar. Hopefully this camera will do what I need it to. I assume it will.
