there is no HDMI port.. they only went as far as printing it on the box when implementing it.

that had me pretty on board with it.. kinda disappointed but glad I saw that before I bought.

I found it entertaining that, in the picture of the back of the unit, there's clearly a label reading "HDMI" stamped into the case between the headphone jack and the SD card ... with blank plastic underneath the label.
And as far as I can tell, there's no "deluxe" version from Augen that does include an HDMI jack. (Unless it shares its case with some other brand of cheap Chinese tablet.)

There are instructions out there to root it, so you can get the real app market.

Biggest piece of crap you could ever buy - The unit is resistive touchscreen - meaning you have to beat it to get it to take even a single letter. - The unit crashed constantly even when loading a basic website - if the website I loaded had flash, the browser would crash - This unit is slowwwwwww ... The only thing I'd recommend this unit for is ... well ... nothing - For a few bucks more, go to Sears and get the GTablet by Viewsonic - It has the tegra 2 which is ready to handle honeycomb when released & is rooted therefore you can install a custom android brew that runs flawlessly. The viewpad is also capacitive screen which is beautiful. Stay away from this and all augen products - I bought it at kmart when it was $200 and it went back less than 48 hours later.

After research, I would pass for the following reasons.

1. Looks like crap! Cheap is an understatement. I would be embarrassed if I was on a plane next to an Ipad or iPhone.

2. Price. Maybe for $40. That is the most I will pay for this thing.

3. Save for a month or two and upgrade to iPad or other android device.

4. This is something that I would buy on impulse and wish I had my money back within a day. Sometimes cheap or value isn't the best option.

I just feel this is a waste of money. It is something that would end up in my woot crap drawer, which is growing. I would have buyer remorse for this product. If it ever goes under $40, I might bite.

Back at product launch, the reviews for this were terrible. A more recent review at Test Freaks indicates the unit has been updated with a larger 3.5mm audio plug and it now includes auto-orientation sensing.

http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/review-of-augen-gentouch78-7-android-tablet/

It's still not a powerful tablet PC and has it's flaws, but $109 is a decent price to read e-books and run light Android games/apps *IF* it's the updated unit. If I knew the refurb would be the better one, I'd be in for one. (May still get one and see if I get lucky.)

This is a comparable hardware platform to the Velocity Cruz Reader, or the Pandigital Novel, with the addition of a microphone (if I recall correctly). I've had a Cruz Reader since Christmas, and have flashed the ROM to make it a general purpose Android tablet with access to the Android Market (the official app store). There is much activity at Slatedroid, developing enhanced ROMs to flash the Cruz Reader with - it's improving daily. The Cruz Reader was $99 at BB recently, and still can be found at $119 at various outlets.

"You can attempt to cancel your order by emailing service@woot.com with your order number and letting them know you'd like to cancel. Assuming your order hasn't shipped yet, you should be able to cancel."

That's what I tried to do as well but my hopes are not high. I have many sd cards (non micro SD) that I wanted to use with this. Woot claims SD card slot all others say micro SD.

Mine will be unopened and returned even if this means I eat return shipping cost.

For everyone who has problems with the market, try looking into an alternative market. For example "SlideMe" or "applanet."

I think you just have to email, or call them on Monday. I don't think it ships out for like a week after you order it.

Got one of these as a prize at a work holiday party. I returned it with the gift receipt back to Kmart after messing with it for about a week. It was about $170 in December (new).

Pros:
Inexpensive.

Cons:
*The resistive touch screen requires quite a bit of force to operate. I had to use two fingers to get it to swipe and even then it was difficult.
*The Micro-SD slot was defective on my unit. The card would not go into the slot (that's what she said). If you put the card in at the wrong angle, it would miss the slot completely and fall into the unit. After doing some research, I found quite a few others that had the same problem.
*No Android market out of the box. I hear it is possible by rooting it, but I never got that far.
*Without a Micro-SD card, this will not play music or video. Since my card slot was broken, it severely impeded the usefulness of the device.
*The web browser seems very slow. Comparable to my blackberry curve 8330 on verizon. I expected it to be much faster considering it was on wifi.
*The unit would sometimes not boot at all. This is a known issue that is fixed with a patch.
*The headphone jack was not the standard 3.5mm size. Instead it uses the smaller 2.5mm.

Woot: 3.5mm headphone jack

Also, since Android Market isn't installed on the device as it ships, where do the "over 2,000 apps" come from?

Thanks!

There is no Android app for Netflix. So your hope to watch Netflix would have to be fulfilled through your browser...if compatible.

The one I purchased in December from Kmart had the 3.5mm audio. From what i can gather, there were two different versions that came out. The first had the 2.5mm w/o auto gyro and the second had the 3.5mm with the auto gyro.

It's got a micro-SD port and not a regular SD port as described on Woot (Woot, I would open one up and check to be sure and modify your product description so you don't get a lot of returns... or at least more than usual). If you look at the picture, you'll see that the size of the SD port is the size of a micro-SD.

There is no HDMI port but there is a print of it above where the port should have been on the device itself. I guess they had originally planned to have it but decided not to put that in.

This is not the iPad or the Galaxy so if you want a full featured, ready to use, bug free capacitive device, don't by this. But if you want to get your feet wet with learning how to root android devices this is as good a device as any to start. If anyone can recommend other comparably inexpensive devices that the Android dev teams are currently working on, please post.

Yup, pretty much for tech heads.
