Deadheads of the world, rejoice! Everyone else on the planet, continue going about your day! The Grateful Dead are going to release a new box set that will include "the entirety of 22 concerts from the jam band's 1972 European tour." The whole thing is going to be on 60(!) CDs and cost more than $400.

There are so many things wrong with this idea...

First of all, think of your target demographic. Do deadheads even HAVE $400? I'm talking collectively. Like, if all of them worldwide scraped up their savings, I'm not 100% sure they could buy this set.

And hey, that's cool man. Your stuff owns YOU after awhile, we totally get it. You guys are like a modern day Jesus roaming from town to town with dirty feet and just the clothes on your back; you're members of a welcoming and gregarious community open to sharing and caring for each other based on the bonds of fellowship forged in noodling guitar riffs. Which means the target audience is very likely to buy one set and burn the thing to share with everybody they meet, thereby eliminating the need to buy it.

The Grateful Undead
"I'll just refinance my gravity bong."

Second, and not to go for low-hanging fruit here, but it's a Grateful Dead box set. Is there really anything left to be revealed here? Whoever owns the rights to that stuff has been squeezing it for every last penny for decades, and fans have responded by buying it up like each bootleg contained a cure for glaucoma.

And sure, you can say I just "don't get it, man," because I'm not a fan. But you know what? I like music. Sure, I don't like music that sounds like someone turned on a faucet that emits absent-minded, meandering guitar riffs instead of water and left it running, but there are bands that I absolutely LOVE and I still don't want a box set of every concert they did on the same tour. Tours generally have a theme; usually they're in support of a particular album to increase record sales and help the band make a buck since most record deals screw them to the wall in terms of money for albums sold. But they tend to play very similar setlists from show to show. So not only do you have 60 CDs of Grateful Dead tunes, but you have 60 CDs of roughly the exact same performance over and over and over. Steel yourself for the heartbreak when you learn that Jerry used that "This town rocks the best" line on EVERY town, not just yours.

The Dead / 6.17.03
"Nobody rocks like 'say town name here!' Ah, crap."

I don't pretend to get the obsession with owning every single musical note ever produced by The Dead. Especially since the overwhelming majority of them were just plain bad. But there's a weird sense of pride in the community over that sort of thing: "Oh man, that tour in '74 was TERRIBLE! I saw every single show!" The argument seems to be that they like the band SO much that they want to hear the good AND the bad. That's sort of like walking out of a movie and saying, "Boy, that movie was so good I'd watch it again and again! Even if they somehow managed to shoot it without any sort of script and the actors just rambled incoherently for four hours. Without working microphones!"

There's also the unfortunate-but-obvious fact that fewer and fewer people are buying or using CDs. An album collection takes up a lot less space on a hard drive than it does in boxes and milk crates in your bedroom; this whole thing could fit on a flash drive. Not even a BIG flash drive, either.

CD Collection
"All of it? Naw man; this is the guitar solo in 'Touch of Grey.'"

Couldn't agree more? Think I've got it all wrong? Foaming at the mouth to buy that Grateful Dead box set? Let us know in the comments below!

Ha - you really DON'T get it man!

The great thing about the Dead, and the reason why it was so fun to see multiple shows on a tour is that they didn't use a setlist.
No two shows were ever exactly alike.
Sure, they would have some songs that they would play more frequently on certain tours, but there were always surprises.

I tried to find a track list for the box set so I could show you the variety of songs played, but (strangely enough) I couldn't find it anywhere.

But, I'd guess that, over 22 shows, they probably repeated something like 25% of the songs.
Might be more than that, but also they may have only repeated some once over 22 shows.

Anyway, the Grateful Dead certainly isn't for everyone (I've actually kind of out grown them myself), but you should really know what you're talking about before you knock 'em.

Peace, brother! ;P

Quote from guitarist Bob Weir about the box set:
"We had a pretty plump repertoire by that time. So you're gonna go several nights before you hear a repeat. And if you hear one, it's going to be pretty different."

THAT is exactly why people went to multiple shows back in the day, and want to own recordings of every show today.

The blog today pretty much aligns to why I dislike most people who are obsessed with music and it said it all in a much nicer way than I could state it.

I would sum up my feelings this way, "Go get a job hippie!"

Insightful.

While it's true that some of the folks that I enjoyed seeing the Dead with have eschewed a traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle, the vast majority of us *have* jobs, thank you very much. We are doctors, lawyers, college professors, athletes, professionals, laborers, parents. In fact, I'd say it's statistically likely that you (if you yourself have a job) work for a Deadhead.

Derisive humor and baseless comments only serve to reveal your ignorance. Listen, learn, and think before you group people you don't know and things you don't understand under facile labels.

I have an excellent job, a wonderful wife, a diverse interest in music, and will be buying this set of CDs because it marks one of many pinnacle moments in the history of a f*ckin' awesome band.

Peace (and a little enlightenment) to you!

This set sold out in 4 days and is now fetching 4 figures on eBay. There are lots of well-to-do Deadheads out there. The quality of musicianship on this box set rivals anything you will hear from other improvisational groups past or present. Think about the Dead's performance of songs like a jazz musician's performance of a standard. The "head" is the same but each individual reading can be vastly different. I can't imagine anyone sighing at a John Coltrane concert in the 60s and saying, "oh geeze....is he really going to play My Favorite Things AGAIN??"

what a pointless, insulting post woot bot. in the last month my opinion of woot has changed. first the Sirius GPP booth @CES dedicated only to selling advertising and no nifty swag of any kind laying about. now this post that insults not only a group of great musicians but hundreds of thousands of followers of that music. i don't care if you don't like the Dead, lots of people don't. putting your brand behind this hate is not smart. one thing i didn't want to think of when i think of woot is: they hate the Grateful Dead.

but i do now. congrats, you are no longer cool.

I have two Garcia ties, both gifts, but very nice nonetheless.

Couple of fallacies here; maybe more, but I'll stick with two.
1) Many so-called "Deadheads" are doing quite fine financially - well-employed and otherwise normal members of society.
2) The Dead as a general rule never played the same show twice. The set list was always changing, especially between two consecutive shows. Having been to sequential shows, I have experienced it first-hand. And, given that they're a "jam band", most of the song is different from playing to playing.

Think about it - how is that any different from so-called "jazz standards"? Now maybe you're not a jazz fan either, I am. The only truly American musical art form. How many times, by how many artists, can you stand to listen to "I'll Remember April"? If you enjoy jazz, the answer is quite a few. It's different every time; different improvisations, different arrangement, different tempo - who knows? I can listen to a saxophone and tell you if it's Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, Ben Webster, Stan Getz - all could be playing the exact same song the exact same way. It's okay to appreciate nuance. It's ok not to also.

$400 for the box set? Is there something really special about the 1972 European tour? For those who don't want to shell out that kind of cash, there is an extensive list of live recordings of the Grateful Dead on the Internet Archive available for free.

You seem confused, so maybe you should just let the music play. You never know, once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right. I am guessing Amazon didn't get a piece of the $400 box sets that quickly sold out and the writer clearly doesn't know anything about a Dead tour or show. Too bad.

Yeah, it's definitely a bit too easy to poke fun at the Dead and their fans - particularly if you are completely ignorant of what it is you're talking about.

It's a mistake to try to convert (most) people. I get that some people just don't like the rambling, jam style of the music, or even a lot of the (myriad) genres that their music spans.
And as a late-teen/early 20's Deadhead, I find that now that I'm in my 40's, I don't really enjoy them as much as I used to.

It is true that the Dead's fan base runs the gamut, from the pseudo-hippy, unwashed, scumbag - "I have no job/money because I've devoted my life to dropping acid and following the Dead - so please give me your money/food/drugs/a place to sleep" - dregs of society to some of the wealthiest executives, celebrities and sports stars.
And everywhere in between.

The author of the OP clearly has no idea what he's talking about - the stuff about "60 CDs of roughly the exact same performance over and over and over", clearly demonstrates that he "just doesn't get it, man".

I understand and normally appreciate the Woot writers' acerbic wit. And let's face it - antagonizing their customers (all in fun) is a big part of what makes them so hip and amusing.

But usually their acerbic wit is intelligent and wry. In this case it's just misinformed and ignorant.

Despite my rambling, I'm really not personally affronted. Just disappointed that the writers really missed the mark on this one.

As I said, the Dead and their fans are an easy target, and had the author known even a little of what he was talking about, he would not have missed that target by so wide a margin.

Someone who doesn't have any idea what a barn is will have a pretty hard time hitting the broad side of one.

That's all - at least for now ;)

One more small thing:

You do know that the photo above (6/17/03) was taken 8 years after Jerry's death, right?

I need to get a job at Woot drafting clueless posts about things of which I know nothing. My
formula for a long career will be just to be as condescending and flippant as possible while doing my best to rile whomever is bound to be affected.

Then i'll toss it all off and sit back and enjoy the fruits of all my hard work.

The guy who wrote this copy should take off his hat and rub his head with a towel. Then he can resort to writing another essay on the impossibility of polishing a turd.

I would like to say that I genuinely appreciate this response. I didn't write this particular post (though I don't like the Dead at all and back Randy on that) but it's very nice to see someone on the Internet be able to say "Hey, I know your job is to be dumb, I just didn't agree with it this time" rather than calling for us to be fired because we made fun of their favorite band.

So just for you, I'll offer to listen to one song of your choice all the way through and give the band another chance, and maybe even post my feelings here in the comments if my mind is changed by your choice. Just let me know which one I'm trying and I'll get right on it.

Obviously "Touch of Grey" doesn't count. ;)

I did a rough estimate of the albums showing and came up with a round number of 440 CDs. If you consider each one to have 700 Mb worth of music on them, then you're looking at 308 Gb worth of data. I would rate your assumption that all this music..."this whole thing could fit on a flash drive. Not even a BIG flash drive, either" to be a flat erroneous conclusion.

Doing a quick check of a typical two-set, three hour GD show, indicates that they run
about 1.1G. The box set is 60 cds and some of them, especially the third disc of the show will be only about three-quarters or half-full. I'm guessing that 22 shows would require, at most, 25G.

Wow - I am honored.
This is a big responsibility, so give me some time to come up with "the" song.
However, if you'd be willing to possibly listen to a second one, off the top of my head, "One More Saturday Night" comes to mind - probably because it was one of the more often repeated songs in the set lists of the Europe '72 tour posted above.
And that was always one of my favorites - I was always more of a fan of Bobby than Jerry (blasphemy!).

Keep in mind, I readily admit that the Dead is not for everyone, and also, I was never a fanatic "they can do no wrong" type of fan (those types annoyed me to no end).

But, thank you for having an open mind.
Listen to "One More Saturday Night" if you feel so inclined, but give me a bit to come up with my "official" choice.

p.s.: I'd be much more inclined to try to convert you into a fan of Frank Zappa than of the G.D.

Randall:

Yes, some people don't get it.

What is vengeful about wanting to sell a CD box set of material that was recorded almost 40 years ago? No one is forcing you to buy it.

Forget the fact that not all people who like the Dead were even around in 1972. You included?

Forget the fact that they made more money selling concert tickets than selling records, and that recordings of their concerts are still making more money than studio records.

Forget the fact that the recordings you can download on archive.net are audience tapes, not board tapes, and these are off a 16 track recorder.

Not everyone followed them from city to city in VW buses selling veggie burritos.

Being condescending to a large part of your readers is not funny.

Peace.
