In response to the description, I would like to note that "UFO" is in fact an initialism, not an acronym. If it was an acronym, you would say it "OOH-fo".

Eff it... I'm in for one.
My 8-9 year old Dell quit on me a couple months ago and I have been at the mercy of my locked down work tablet. Since I have all the periph's already, I'm mainly buying Win 7, the quad core, and built in wi-fi which will be nice since I'm using a USB adapter now.

Oh well, re-furb gods please be good to me! I'm still (5 years later) using a re-furb Dyson (amongst other purchases from woot) that has been very good to me so far.

Wish me luck!

Lousy animated "want one" button...in for one. My current 6 year old computer sounds like it's sawing the hard drive in half most days. Praise be to the refurb deity to keep me safe.

I have a computer, still works fine.. purchased 2003? and uses office 2000 - thing is I now have thousands of word docs (which I treasure) and worry about upgrading anything word for fear I won't be able to open them... I am not so smart, am 63 w/o children/grandchildren/just dogs and they are now help. If I get this computer would my old word docs work - OPEN - if I transfer them into this new system? And about my buddy below - He Has NEVER been on a computer so was looking for something very easy for him. All he wants to do is email, send a picture of his dog and maybe play solitaire? .... I posted before ... posting again to you because you look so smart with your purple diamond/12 if you are still up, before this woots off forever (or until the next woot off) thanks again
I want to buy this for my 64 yo friends birthday - he has never had a computer just wants to receive pictures from his grandchildren and snap a few of his dog to send to them. Is he doing to have to hook up to a motom and pay $60 some bucks a months to get on line, or will this wireless, grab one off his neighbor who is online 24/7?

I don't know if you missed this one, but your old DOCs would work. They could open in the Works 9 that this came with. You could install your Office 2000 if you have those original CDs. Or you can always download and install this free word processor, which will open and edit and save DOC files from Office 2000 with no problem (good for any Windows machine by the way):

softmakeroffice.com

For your buddy I suggest you get a $299 or $329 laptop (not a netbook) on sale at Staples or Office Depot or Walmart or the like. Or here if one comes up soon. A basic all in one piece machine. Add a wired USB mouse for him. He may be able to use his neighbor's wi-fi, with the neighbor's permission and password, or he'll have to get his own service.

Does anyone know how many extra days we should expect the computer to stay in the warehouse because of snow. Just looking at my account and it still says warehouse, and it's been more then five days.

Woots policy:
"Again, your order will typically ship within 5 business days."
I guess with the weather, it could be more than 5 "business" days. You can't count weekend days.

Also, you can try tracking the package via reference number. Go to FedEx tracking and under the track by reference link, enter your Woot order number, Country and zip code, it some times shows up here sooner than it does on Woot.

Keep on Wooting !!!

Oh how I wish I had my new computer.

"your order is in."

"YOU'RE ALL SET NOW."

My definition of "All Set" is different I suppose. I will be "All Set" when a computer is in my hands.

But that's what we get with such a wishy-washy phrase.

All set for what exactly? Are any of us truly "All Set"?

Oh Woot. Shall I spend the days anxiously staring out the window, or pensively sitting on my front steps?

Wow, that's unusually fast! Are we talking about the same item, the computer that was sold last Wednesday? Usually I don't even see tracking info before the 5 business days, but you already got the package, and on the East Coast, to boot.

Did you get a tracking notice first? I don't even get a tracking # yet, using the "track by reference" method.

edit: Well, shut my mouth! Reports from the home front inform me that UPS attempted delivery of something today, and given that I'm not expecting anything else to be delivered at home, it's got to be the HP. (That would explain the absence of tracking info on the FedEx site!)

Finally, I'll have a computer that isn't >10 years old!

another edit: #@$%# UPS! Did you know they charge $4 to have an item redelivered on a date of your choosing? (That is, other than tomorrow, the scheduled redelivery date.)

I guess $4 isn't a lot in the big scheme of things, but it's an annoyance. I guess I need to think about the value to me of being able to choose which day I stay home from work for this. Hmm, is that worth more to me than $4?

I received mine today as well.

I don't know what the issue is, but it doesn't seem to recognize my LCD monitor. I plug it in, and wait... The power button (on monitor) never turns from yellow to green meaning it's receiving signal. I'm not sure what to do since I have no other monitor and can't even tell if the machine is starting up or what...

What should I do?

If anyone has any real answers, would you mind emailing me at Xplosonhed@aol.com? Subject WOOT or something so I recognize it? I'm really frustrated and not sure what I need to do...

Help!

Just hooked this baby up, it came with Windows 7 installed but did NOT come with an actual Windows backup CD. It's been a while since I bought a Windows PC -- is this standard practice?

I purchased an HP referb PC from Woot back in 2008, it didn't come with a Windows disk. I don't think they ever do. The PC does allow you to create recovery disks that will restore your system back to it's original configuration. Here is a link that will help with that

On the system I had, I wasn't able to create the recovery disks, I think I had a batch of bad DVD's, but I ordered them from HP, don't remember the cost, but it wasn't too much and worth having them around just in case they are ever needed. This link should help you with the ordering process

Did you try the troubleshooting procedure they list under "Monitor is Blank"? I found it following the links from the main product page. They also have a link there for ordering backup discs, for the person who asked. (And naturally I found my way to that page courtesy of NightGhost's first post for this item.)

Anyhoo, this is what they say generally, before they tell you the troubleshooting steps. Does this sound like the problem you're having?

NOTE: If the monitor goes blank for while, but then comes back, the computer is attempting to change the display resolution or other display setting. A blank screen and quiet clicking noises can be normal while the monitor makes the changes to the display. If the monitor stays blank for more than 5 seconds and then reverts back to the same display settings (no change is noticeable), then the monitor was not able to enter into the new display settings. When this happens, you must adjust the display settings in the software program that was being used to change the display setting. For example, when starting a game from the in-game menu, the video display goes blank for while, but then goes back to a menu or back to the Windows desktop. to fix, adjust the display resolution for the game (from the game's option menu) to match the Windows desktop display resolution.

OK, to answer my own question, no, the thing I posted doesn't sound like what you described. And how alarming, I read all the way down the page, they have you trying to bend back bent pins and all kinds of other annoyances.

Hope you find the solution.

Ended up being a bad cable which frankly, I don't understand. If I unplug a cable from a docking station (where the monitor works fine) and plug it into the HP, blank screen. Go back to dock, works fine...

Hmmm....

Grabbed a new cable and tried it, bingo.

Of course that's leaving out hours of cursing and scratching my head, then more cursing.

So far, so good. Fast and after I unloaded a bunch of bloat-ware,backed up the OS on an external and also a repair disc easily.

Thank you W00t for yet another deal.

Got mine today as well from Standford Ct.
Glad I was working from home today as there was no tracking information anywhere.
First thing I did, and always do with any new PC, open it up and make sure everything is connected. You never know what might come loose in shipping.
Once I started it up, works great.
Now the process of moving everything from the old PC to the new.
Also thinking of getting more memory and another hard drive before I start installing stuff.

What the WOOT? No shipping info or updates? This is the problem with drop shipping. WOOT takes the orders, but another company fills and ships them. WOOT doesn't really know if they have enough to fill the orders on time. But this way WOOT didn't have to buy a certain quantity up front, pay for shipping and stocking and eliminated the risk of selling all of them.

This is my first problem with WOOT and hopefully my last.

Can I get an update on my order?

Good point. Considering that we bought these on Wednesday, some of them (like mine) shipped on Friday, and started arriving on Monday, it's a nice departure from the usual interminable Woot waits.

People asking for shipping info: keep in mind that the pattern so far has been no advance shipping info whatsoever, just a visit from UPS, out of the blue. Mine was delivered today, haven't unpacked it yet.

Got mine today - w00t w00t, but dear LORD the bloatware! Would be nice if we could get a clean install of Windoze and pick and choose the few apps that might be worthwhile... anyone ever have luck getting some restore discs from HP for a refurb PC like this one?

BTW, for all those other wooters in post-purchase limbo, my woot order status never did tell me it was shipped.

Mine was basically DOA. It wouldn't post. IAW Woot return policy I contacted the MFR first. They were good enough to change the warranty period starting the day of purchase. Their records had indicated the warranty expired 2 months before purchase. After some basic troubleshooting, HP will repair this item at no cost to me. They are also paying for all shipping. Turn around time about 2 weeks. I consider this experience nothing more than bad luck. All it cost me was an hour on the phone with tech support and probably a 2 week delay in having a working computer. No fault of Woot.

bruster63

quality posts: 0 Private Messages bruster63

Yikes, two known DOA's. Hope this isn't an ugly trend. I guess out of 1,233 units there's bound to be a couple bad one's. Fingers crossed.

All I have in my order status is;
"your order is in."
"you're all set now."

I had a baaaad experience with w00t back in January of 2010. Bought a sweet 23" monitor. After 6 weeks of non-delivery, no shipping updates, and dozens of emails, I told them where they could put the monitor. They did, and I got a refund that day. This is my first real-order-but-it's-only-the-first-week-so-I'm-going-to-wait-for-it from them, but I'm already getting a wee bit nervous.

No email from UPS, no shipping update from w00t.

Someone reassure me please....

Got my tracking info today as well. 2/14 delivery :-( Sometimes its a curse to live on the left coast.

Btw, regarding the poster worried about buying a "refurb". I have purchased a few with luck so far, just like a "new" unit they are usually tested and work when they leave the factory. My wife bought a new Dell laptop that arrived DOA, ya just never know what punishment they are subjected to during transit. Mine has to go all the way cross country, you bet I'm sweat'n it.
