will hook one up in the office for my ipod since I can't access my itunes from two computers.

I got these about a month ago from one of these Woot-like outfits. I only got them to play my mp3 player at work/outdoors, etc. The funny thing is (for those complaining about batteries) the sound is lousy with the batteries, and is about as loud as my notebook speakers without. Go figure. It will work for what I wanted them for, not much else. Sound quality is OK, but . . . I will keep them and use them.

To all those paranoid androiding about AAA batteries. Grow up. Get a recharger and a set of reuseable batteries. i picked up a 15 minute Everready charger and travel with it so I have an almost inexhaustable supply of power. Plus, it is eco-friendly. As far as 3 vs. 4--get 6 batteries and keep both charged. When one set fails, pop in a new set. Better yet get 12 (there's an even number) and have both nits ready with back-ups at all times.....

I am in for a pair. While I am a sound snob and have no use for these, I will pitch these in my "random holiday gift / stocking stuffer basket"

These are awesome... i got the first version of these from amazon years ago and I still use them everyday... I think i might be in for a set just to give as gifts!

i will warn that they are a lot bigger than they seem in the pics... like a giant ostrich egg...

I have these speakers. I found it hard to tell whether the switch is on or off. I run down a lot of batteries that way.

Bulletproof and Recommended.

I bought a set of these some years ago at WalMart ($20 then) and am still using them. They won't rock the Casbah, but they'll liven up a hotel suite on a road trip.

It's a clever design; The hemispherical speakers snap into the rubber-cased central amplifier/battery holder and the cables wind into its circumference so that it all turns into an armored (large) softball for packing.

Good: Modestly good sound for such small speakers - Phillips sells the speakers by themselves as well (they can be used by themselves), though the amp makes them better. It has a standard stereo mini-plug so it works on everything from off-brand .mp3 players to laptops. You'll find yourself fiddling with the equalizer settings on your media player to get the best sound out of these.

Not so good: Batteries. Battery life is okay, but there is a mini-USB port for power too...I repurposed an old Razr phone charger to run the thing so it never runs out. Similarly you can run a USB cable from your laptop.

Do the speakers have a 3.5mm connection to the power pack? Basically, could I plug 2 power packs in for double the (tinny-ish and probably static at this point) sound?

I've used these for years. They sound really good and pack up nicely. I also use the amp by itself when I want to listen to something on my laptop that is not real loud. It boosts the sound to the headphones nicely. Batteries last a while as long as you remember to turn it off when you're done.

Yes, but you would probably increase distortion.

If they will work with the IPAD, how can I get them to work with the maxIPAD? I can't find the 3.5mm jack. I thought that soothing music from four speakers would help my wife during that time of the month. If I get the ones with wings would they secure the speakers better?

I bought an older set of these at Target about 4 years ago and they're still going strong. It will be nice to have a couple more for the studio, office, bathroom, etc.

Got these at Walmart for $10 last year. Best use is to mount them on the bike for instant tunes to cruise to. They are just loud enough to cut through the wind. The sound quality is much better with batteries so don't forget to turn them off when not in use.

will these work with an iPhone?

I have researched these pretty thoroughly and I don't think they have the usb port.

It looks like Philips had another, very similar, model that did have the usb port but this model does not seem to have it.

How hard is it to cancel a Woot order?

I have owned a set of these speakers for a year and a half and they're excellent. I use rechargeable batteries (NiCd type) to power them and play music while I'm in the shower. The rechargeable batteries will last me at least month and a half with almost daily use (20mins/day). The range of the speakers is better than I expected. Don't expect heart-thumping bass but it does well enough. On a recent ski trip while socializing in the game room a friend had some portable speakers for his iphone and when their batteries drained I took mine out and several people made a comment that they were noticeably louder and better sounding. I definitely endorse these speakers (I'd take advantage of this deal but I just don't need another set!).

so in terms of playing these outdoor, how loud would they be? loud enough to deem worthy of buying or should i just buy something bigger?

So these don't even have a power jack to add your own AC adapter if you choose not to use batteries? I'd probably pick these up if they had that option. They remind me of the old X2Gen X-Egg speakers. They were great for what they were, but they had more features, including AC power and an SD Card slot. I would have settled for the AC power. Too bad. Even if Philips didn't want to include the AC adapter, they could have at least included the ability.

I hope these are better than the ones they offered about a year ago from Philips. Because they sucked when I bought them at least a year ago. Ended up tossing out both pairs within 6 months.

Ok, heres a question for you then. Hows the case on the amp come apart? Are there scews, or is the darn thing sonic welded? Or maybe you just hooked up your charger to the battery bay terminals... I could easily add a USB cord for power, but its only worth it to me if I can actually get inside the amp to do it, and sonice welding is always a pain.
