From our experience in XDA, the GTAB has issues with some router configs. I would try this:

1- Try a different channel on your router (could be interference)
2- Try dropping it to G only, if it's an N router (GTAB supports N, but N is one of those "it's not quite ratified so everyone does it differently" things).
3- Try removing any security (just as a test!). The goal there is to see if its the router's security settings that could be causing problems.

My concern is that you could RMA it, get a new device and have the exact same problems. It could just be a router compatibility issue.

I have a FIOS Actiontec and a DD-WRT'd Cisco 160N that works (if that helps)

Thanks for the list and thanks for suggesting getting the update from your site. I've been on XDA for a while, since I modded my wife's G2, but didn't think to look there for the "easy" OTA update for this thing.

For me, I'm personally a little loathe to monkey with my routers since I've got specific configurations and run loads of devices off of them.

You can assign static IPs in android but it's an arcane process. I don't have my gTab yet so some of the exact menu terminology may be incorrect but hopefully it's followable.

Go into the Settings > Wireless and network settings > Wi-Fi Settings. From there, press the hardware menu button and go to advanced. Check both the "Enable Auto IP" and "Use Static IP" boxes and enter your IP, Gateway, etc.

Make sure it's clockworkmod .8 bekit version, first off. NO other clockworkmod versions work properly and may soft-brick your device when flashing full ROMs (ESPECIALLY the ROM Manager one - avoid that like the plague!)

The reason why I mention this is because newer versions of clockworkmod will default to your microSD, if u have one in there. If u have one and the directory structure looks like the microSD, check that version! If you have a newer version, please downlevel it to the bekit one (it's in my "Recovery Pack" post, in PART2.

i had the same issue.

I told my router to use g only instead of b/g and had to tell it to broadcast my SSID.

neither change worked alone, but together that fixed it. prior to those changes, I had assigned my ip address through the router using the mac address of the tablet.

I've stayed up to date reading every post on all 61 pages of this discussion thread, so I'll try to go back to where that nice person offered a 3389 ZIP file to you & I thought you told him he can freely upload it to megaupload but I cannot remember if he offered us a web link for it just in case he included the MASTER folder of APK's.

Thanks again. I'll update if I can find anything.

EDIT: I noticed that the /system/app/ folder has lots of APK's, but it does not look like what folks have said are in the MASTER folder which I never did look inside when I had it since I did not know what was in it or what it was for.

Setting a static ip worked on both my Gtabs.

Go Settings/Wireless&Net/WiFiSettings/Advanced/check UseStatic Ip then set it below 100.
Usually you use your gateway as the first DNS and any other for the second. (google your isp and dns)

In Vegan you need to be in WiFi Settings and select the Menu button (#4 in quick setup) to access the advanced settings.

On another note. The Gtab I OTA updated today didn't lose any apps or active wallpaper like the first one I did yesterday. Hmmmmmm

I have my gtab up and running with TnT Lite v4.4.0. I got market up and running after completing the market fix. I've dl'd apps like titanium and angry birds. Went to look for dolphin browser and am able to locate a bunch of addons and the pro license, but can't find the actual program. I did the market fix a couple more times but keep getting the same results when I get market back up and running; searching for "dolphin browser" continues to return 83 results...

Am I missing something obvious or do I need to keep repeating the market fix until I get my tablet into the proper state?

Since I'm a new user at xda I can't post in the dev forums. Any help is much appreciated.

PS: Roebeet, TnT Lite 4.4.0 is spectacular!!! Definitely made my purchase worth it.

Like many others here, I had the same problems. It didn't have any protective overlay on the screen, was completly dead upon arrival, had few scratches on the back cover and was definetly opened up and repackaged once.
After unpacking and charging, it booted up to the classic screen with live wallpaper and few apps already installed. After started to play with a little bit, it stoped responding and I had to shut it down. It didn't want to boot up but after keep playing with the power button it came back up but this time I had to set it up like it was brand new out of the box.
I also lost all the free apps and it doesn't play youtube videos. I tried the reset procedure and still no luck and I also lost the Angrybirds game doing this.
Beside all this there is this one dead pixle on the screen staring right at me. I am pretty disappointed right now.

I received mine today. It was brand new with no indication of being opened, etc.

I upgraded the stock ROM to 3588 OTA, and then flashed it with TnT Lite 4.4.0. I then installed the Amazon App Store, configured it for my email, and installed a bunch of apps from both the Android and Amazon App Stores.

For my browser, I installed FireFox 4. It has a lot of very nice features like favorite syncing and add-ins. I would recommend it over any other ones, but that's just my opinion.

Big props to Woot for shipping out over 10,000 of these with very few issues. Also a big shout-out to Roebeet and the other XDA folks who have chimed in to help us tablet newbies.

I am definitely happy with my purchase. It's a solid little device with some serious potential!

I've got a fairly complex setup, so I'm familiar with how to set up routers, devices, etc. But adding a static IP didn't help. My wife's Android phone has no problem connecting, neither do any of the other laptops, Nook, iPod Touches, etc.

FIRST - Update your tablet to the new version 3588 when you are prompted after powering it on!

Download the TnTLite 4.4.0 RAR file from the link a few posts back. There are two items in the RAR file; UPDATE.ZIP and a folder called recovery.

With the tablet turned on, Connect your tablet to your machine with the included USB cable. Your tablet will prompt to allow you to connect the tablet to the PC, select YES (or allow, I forget). Using a program like WinRAR or 7zip, Extract the .RAR file to the root of the drive that your PC assigns to the tablet (in my case, it is E: ). Update.ZIP will replace a copy that already exists, and the recovery folder will overwrite the existing one as well. You do not need to extract any files from the UPDATE.ZIP, just put it there as it is.

Once the files have been extracted, MAKE SURE TO GRACEFULLY DISCONNECT THE TABLET. Assuming a Windows machine, you will have to right click on the drive letter in My Computer and select Eject.

Power off the tablet. Holding the Volume + button, press the power button. In the upper right corner you will see 'Recovery button detected'. It will take about 4 minutes to complete, and your tablet will reboot. You should then be using TnT Lite!

I charged up full then Over The Air (OTA) updated to 3588.

Then used the instructions here to put on Clockwork Mod v.08 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245

After that I used the same instructions above in concert with Roebeet's TnT Lite v4.4.0 info and package here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004 to put TnT Lite v4.4.0 on my G Tablet.

After getting TnT Lite v4.4.0 up and running, and since Roebeet also baked in the apk for Flash 10.2, I skipped ahead to the instructions above (865245) to run the market fix.

Using market I started by dl'ing titanium, and some apps (all the angry birds). Flash worked in the browser that is the default for v4.4.0.

Fwiw, I really believe that using the xda search option for their forums for relevant content, and also the videos xda links to on youtube are a huge help in getting yourself ready and comfortable enough to go through with this process. The folks over there put together some great ROMs and resources.

That got me to where I am now, which is hung up on trying to find the elusive Dolphin.

I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination say that what I did was a best practice or even correct. Hopefully you can work out what is right for you... and good luck!!!

Help,

I've been using my tablet since this afternoon. I let it upgrade OTA and downloaded a few apps but didn't modify much else. I hooked it up to my pc to copy over some pdfs and music and then disconnected. It seemed ok but then after I restarted it it lost many of the folders and only a few folders (Android, DCIM, Evernote, and one called LOST.DIR) show up. What happened? Is this a major issue?

An easier solution is to install clockworkmod and then wipe the user data that way. It will at least get you up and running, but OTA updates may not work anymore so keep that in mind. Still, you can install a modded ROM if you want.

I wish Woot! had a FAQ area - I could start writing up docs in there! Just read the posts on XDA on how to install cwm via the microSD card.

Hi Roebeet, thanks for your post. I think you were right about there being some sort of user data issue. Right after reading your post today I went to turn on my G Tab to let the battery drain down.

For kicks I tried the config steps again and it suddenly worked. My battery was around 35% now. I quickly turned on Wifi and downloaded the OTA update.

So far no problems using the G Tab in stock form, with the OTA update. Thanks for your help and for calling them to ask about that procedure.

I will be modding this G Tablet once I know it's stable for the time being. I will probably at least get ClockWorkMod installed in the event there's any future problems.

Very odd about the user data thing, I never heard of anything like that before, but I guess it makes sense, based on how the tablet was acting

I don't want to scare anyone, but we have heard of data corruption on the GTAB, with new devices.

Granted, this with the 296x builds, which these Woot! devices are not. But a few of you are reporting un-requested data wipes (usually with that Angry Birds black screen) and now an instance where the /sdcard (which gets mounted to your PC) was inexplicably wiped.

The /data (user data) and /sdcard (content folder, which gets mounted on your PC) are both on that 16GB of memory they advertise - it's basically has two partitions.

We've seen so many issues on XDA where these partitions get corrupted, I can't even count.
I won't go into the theories, but I will tell you what we've done on XDA when weird stuff like this occurs:

1- Install clockworkmod
2- Reboot into cwm recovery, choose Advanced -- Partition SD card -- 2048M -- 0M and run it.

This will take quite a while to run (maybe 10 minutes, so just be patient). What this does is repartitions and reformats both /data and /sdcard, so be aware that any data on either WILL be wiped out.

I've had to do this twice on my own GTAB, in the last few months - I think my constant modding probably accelerates the problem, but it has happened at least once to a lot of GTAB users, on XDA. Enough that I wanted to mention it here.

I wouldn't do this unless you have strange issues with file corruption or data loss, but again I wanted to mention it as an option.

joecooool wrote:Running TNT 4.4, is there a way to password protect the unit? Kind of scary running the unit with no protection.

Not really and, if it there was, it would be fairly useless anyway. Think Windows 98 - they had a logon facility in there but it was very easy to get around it.

I do NOT put anything on my GTAB (or any other tablet for that matter) that is personal enough to cause issues if my device was stolen. I.e. I dont do online banking on it, I don't buy things off Amazon etc. The few passwords I store are for things I can easily change from a PC, like my Facebook and Pandora accounts.

Btw, GTAB mods make this situation even worse, as we have it rooted and debugging turned on (just being honest). If my device was stolen, they'd get some family pics, some comics, music they'd probably hate and a few movies. But no financial info.

GliTch04 wrote:roebeet i have 2 questions for you may you can help me out, I loaded gAdam on this gtab and it really made this tablet come to life but is there a way to get the "background" screen to fit the actual screen size on this thing? the top edge is cut off and you cant really see things at the top edge kinda annoying while using the market or adjusting other settings using tabs etc... also the "home screen clock" used to change to home view? is stuck o n 24hr can it be changed to 12?

The 24 hour clock is a "feature" - real Adam owners hate it too. As for the top part being cut off, it's their status bar - you click on the battery icon and it "hides" it.

gADAM is more of a "hey look what we did!" and some people actually like it. But some people hate it (I'm actually one of them). But it is pretty speedy, especially if you add an alternate launcher.

clarinetbob wrote:I am going to ask a Jatravartid question...sorry in advance.

Actually, on stock (and TNT Lite) it's a shutdown command (hold the power button for a few seconds and you'll get a shutdown menu). On mods like VEGAn and CM7, you'll actually get a reboot option.

So I finally installed TnT lite. And while I'm loving some things, others are irking me to no end. How do I get rid of the phone icon on the dock? Some voice dial thing keeps popping up and I don't even know how. There is no weather app. Previous stock weather app was pretty great, I miss it a lot. Wallpapers don't center on the screen, they just tile (meaning you only see the top half of the wallpaper.) I guess I could find wallpapers that are formatted for this tablet. Icons on the home screen are spaced waaay too far apart. And I might be wrong but I see more lag in transitions than I did with the stock OS. I'm sticking with this version because it has the market place.

Sorry Android hitchhiker here. I'm way way out of my comfort zone and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

PS. I hope I don't sound ungrateful to the devs out there. Thanks for everything guys!

My gTab should be on its way and arrive not long after I get off or work. Will do a unboxing report on condition.

Are any wooters looking at CM7 beta builds? There an official RC1 (beta1) on the gTab forum at cyanogenmod.com, and some unofficial but stable nightly builds posted, too. (And compile nightly from source is always an option.)

Any special CM steps or issues that may be well known elsewhere?

Also, I'm getting confused by the data/sdcard partition comments earlier, so let me ask to clarify: /data & /sdcard (16gb) are BOTH internal memory; there is an SD port on gTab, but it doesn't come with a removable card? And where does the removable sdcard mount if /sdcard is internal.

So excited to get playing, might have to wait to start modding & romming on sat.

The other reason why I keep suggesting 3588 is for its recovery (if you keep it). 3588 might (and I stress "might") be a gateway ROM for Viewsonic's future updates, so it's kind of a "better safe than sorry" thing.

From my observations, people are using "sdcard" and "/sdcard" interchangeably, but they can be two different things.

Also, I believe people will see more folders and files if they have rooted their gTab.

Anyway - I THINK the answer to your question is that the slot on the gTab is for a micro sdcard, and it mounts as /sdcard2. What mounts as /sdcard is one partition of the internal memory, which may or may not be an actual sdcard (it may be some other sort of memory on the motherboard.)

To complicate matters, the gTab refers to external memory (our Micro sdcard) as sdcard also.

Good luck to us all!

One thing that has not been mentioned yet about the GTab (and other android devices) are viruses. Are there any concerns about viruses on the GTab and are there anti-virus programs? I ask coming from the Windows world, where this has become a necessity.
