I hate Cox Communications. Had an very minor issue with email. Called tech support. Jatravartid humans blew away my email addresses. So now all my emails are bouncing back to sender.

Now I have to wait to see if my Woot account updates and shows me that my order was shipped. In the past I have received orders before my account even showed it sent.

FML. Did I mention I hate Cox Communications.

A. UPS Mail Innovations works with the U.S. Postal Service, providing the pick-up, processing, and interim transportation of mail, with final delivery being made by domestic and international postal services.

You know you're quoting a UPS service when we're talking about a FedEx service.
Fedex's version of the UPS service you just quoted is SmartPost.
I worked for a company that shipped out over 200 packages a day via FedEx ground and FedEx Home Delivery. The only two differences between FedEx Ground and Home Delivery is that Home Delivery has a surcharge to it because it's going to a residential address.

Well, I spent a lot of time Wednesday checking out the GTAB before ordering at 11:44 EST, so mine has not shipped. However this is not too bad. First I'll do my Taxes and spring cleaning, so that I can play with my GTAB when it comes at the end of the week. Second that lets the people who have already gotten their GTABs report on the FW number and how installing ROM's goes. Third at least I can be happy that I ordered this great WOOT deal.

cmon woot, i know you're owned by amazon-- pull some strings and preload shazam encore on my gtablet?

It's a bit of a pain, but you can do it by downloading Google's Android Emulator and then installing the Amazon Appstore on it.

Once you've installed Appstore on the Emulator and logged into it with your Amazon account Amazon will automatically let you buy any Appstore apps from your PC and store them for download later to your real Android device.

This site has some good instructions for downloading and installing the emulator:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21831/how-to-test-drive-google-android-on-your-pc-without-buying-a-phone/

One major hiccup I had with the emulator is that you can only have 1 network connection enabled as the Emulator isn't smart enough to figure out which is actually connected. So, if you're on a wi-fi connection, you need to make sure your wired connection is disabled in Windows in order for the Emulator to actually make an internet connection.

The emulator is really slow, but once you actually install the Appstore app once you never have to run the Emulator again....

Would be nice, since Amazon owns woot now, if Amazon Prime members got the same benefits they get when purchasing from Amazon. I would love to have free 2 day shipping or $3.95 overnight shipping on this.

Oh well, got plenty of things to do. It will get here when it gets here.

Power it up - if you are on the charger, it should be safe to do. Just don't go off the charger for at least an hour, imo. You may or may not see a lockscreen once the UI comes up the first time. If you see one, then it's probably 3991 or newer, right off the bat.

If you have a lockscreen, just unlock it and you'll have the UI. If you have no lockscreen, no worries then. If you have a setup script asking for things like your wireless, you can skip all that (all those things can be done later).

Then, go into "Settings" app, then in Settings go to the bottom to "About Tablet". You'll see a few things, but the one I'd love to know is:

Tap UI Version

That will tell us for sure what firmware you have.

Thanks again!

THANKS!

3389 -- whew!!!! You are probably all safe, mod wise. That's one revision below the latest "official" release from Viewsonic, which is 3588.

Moderators, a quality post to Cridds, please!

EDIT: Now here's my XDA mod sales pitch. 3389 was the first half-decent firmware from Viewsonic. That's the first one that added a "classic" mode to bypass the heavy "TapnTap" interface. But, imo, the mods over at XDA are a significant improvement. Google Market, improved drivers, stock apps added, etc. 3389 still uses the original Nvidia drivers, but the mods and some stock ROMs have already moved onto newer drivers that greatly improve performance.

If you don't want to mod it, here's my suggestion: Let the OTA ("over the air") updater update you to 3588, once you get it. Very soon, Viewsonic is supposed to release a new firmware that will improve performance significantly, and adds that lockscreen I was talking about. They are tight-lipped as to when, but it's coming.

jlovell999 wrote:If you would be so kind, please do the rest of us a favor and test something out. Initial indications are that apps purchased from Amazon AppStore have been modded such that they don't run if AppStore is not installed. Can you de-install the AppStore app and see if your copy of Repligo still works or if you get the "won't work without AppStore install message. This is the situation with Angry Birds Rio and I suspect it is the case with other apps also. I've always wondered about the "paid" apps and this is a good chance to test. This is something I and others would really like to know.

I would love to help but at the moment I cannot. Once I saw that the RepliGo app did not have the Freehand option (which I purchased it for in the first place) I uninstalled it, hoping for a "Refund" button. Im afraid of buying any additional apps from them becuase if I run into the same problem, I know I am SOL if the app is missing something.

I just uninstalled AppStore from my G2 and neither of the two apps I d/l'ded from them work! Namely Angry Birds and Shazam, which is a free app of the day today. Moreover trying to run Shazam crashed the launcher too!

Makes me wonder if there's more to AppStore then we know. Usage tracking? Something else??? Did anyone actually read the EULA?

[EDIT]
After a bit of skimming through terms of service, they do say that AppStore has to be installed in order for their apps to run, AND you must be signed in. Reinstalled AppStore, and it indeed asked me to sign in, before letting run the apps......

But at least it didn't require an active data connection to run them. Disabled Wi-Fi and Mobile Data, and still able to run...

I'm hoping this is so that they can enable some sort of DRM on the devices that do not have a unique identity (e.g. phones have IMEA number that is unique, but many other Android devices don't)... But sounds kind of fishy still...

I wonder if uninstalling Android Market would kill the market purchased apps? Hm....

Thanks for the info. I am sure that it won't be long before there is a patch for this. "Put this tiny file here and your're good" kind of thing.

All mods are a risk, of course. However, 3389 (and 3588) are a pretty safe bet, if you are going to use the mods over at XDA. It's a "1.1" firmware and all our mods are tested with that dev branch.

This is a situation where I am VERY happy that my concerns were unfounded. Woo hoo!

There's no way I can be subjective on mods. :P

My suggestion is to try them all - TNT Lite, VEGAn, gADAM, or the assorted Gingerbread mods that exist in the XDA development area. All mods have their pros and cons.

The only one I would avoid for now is TwoTapsX. That's one of mine and it's highly experimental -- I actually had to pull it because of all the issues. It's basically a full 3991 mod - solid and fast, but a real pain in the neck to install for some people, causing some soft-bricks.

You make some good p[points.. My experience over the last 30 yeas is that as this not being a laptop or desktop replacement? After seeing what 80% of people use their laptops and desktops for, this tablet is going to perform well enough. And the app stores might actually get them some more function in it's region of unique qualities.

one thing it has a unique purpose, and a reason I'm even looking at tabs, is for the car. I've seen using it paired with a phone for Nav duties.(I'd like to know what conditions are needed in a phone to do this.) But another strength in the car I haven't seen mentioned is pairing it with an OBD-II reader for codes, mileage and all sorts of general and targeted auto maintenance and performance details. I do a lot of driving, plus can also easily help others with codes. Just gotta decide which OBD reader to get and wired vs. wireless performance.

That's actually a good idea. When I got mine months ago, we suggested two things:

1) Charge it fully
2) Do a data wipe ("factory reset")

I still think these are valid first steps. However, if you have Flash and the Kindle apps pre-installed, a data wipe WILL delete them. There are ways to add them back, but still be aware of this.

When you start reading up on mods, a data wipe is almost always suggested as a first troubleshooting step for any problem. If you root it, I would highly recommend "Titanium Backup" as it will backup important user data (cough cough Angry Birds) so you can restore that data after a data wipe.

Looks like we have some new people here (WELCOME!) so let me explain some things...

It doesn't matter what time you ordered an item. We sell one thing a day. We don't process anything until that sale is closed at midnight.

The next day, our poor weary CS people have to go through all the "CANCEL MY ORDER!" and "I MEANT TO ORDER 3!" emails before processing can begin.

It can take up to 5 business days for an item to leave our warehouse.

You may get an tracking number but not see any movement for a few days because FedEx has assigned a tracking number from electronic info received from Woot. However, they haven't gotten the box in their hot little hands yet.

You can get your tracking number from an email that will be sent or from My Account. Check your spam for emails and instructions for My Account are in my signature.

Instructions for tracking your order at FedEx using your order number are also in my signature.

Hope this helps a bit. Main thing is to RELAX. I know you are all eager but just relax. Go check out some deals over at Deals or something. But mostly, patience friends, patience.

UPDATE: I see that agingdragqueen says that 4000 have shipped with more expected to ship by Tuesday. The info about that it doesn't matter what time you place the order still holds though. Orders aren't processed until the sale closes.

arnott wrote:how is the screen?

Assuming it hasn't changed since I got mine (and I doubt it has), it's not very good. It's a netbook screen.

There are some YT videos out there, or looking at these pics that I did, comparing a GTAB with a Xoom:

http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?/topic/15865-screen-angles/

Spot on in landscape, the screen is OK. But the angles are bad, especially one in particular - you get that solarization effect. Apologies in advance, but don't shoot the messenger.

ROMs that alter the refresh rate might help slightly, but not much. My TNT Lite and gADAM mods, for example, up them to 60. And at least one other mod on XDA ups it to 77, I think. The default stock refresh rate is 50.

EDIT: Accessories are, unfortunately, few and far between. Suggest you look in the GTAB XDA section for accessories, as you might get some ideas. There are a few cases and a dock, but you might have to order overseas to get them.

I own a zPad dock for mine, and I got a case from someone in XDA who bought a few overseas and then resold it to me. The zPad dock activates HDMI, so that's the big selling point for it. It also gives you an Ethernet port and an extra USB port.

Does mod ding it to Vegan or TNTLite (which i am planning to ) prevent us from OTA ing to future updates from ViewSonic?

Looks like Google is not going to release the Honeycomb src code for modders anytime soon, and was wondering what we do, if Viewsonic releases a Honeycomb update sometime in the future.

Can we nvflash bekit it to a stock ROM, and then OTA it to whatever Viewsonic throws at us in the future.

Great work on the ROMS btw!!
