There's no structure over in XDA, unfortunately. I am actually just one modder/dev out of many.

My concern however is if the next Viewsonic is 1.2-based (and possibly not compatible with our current mods). If it breaks stuff, I'll post it in General, whenever it's released.

Clockworkmod is kind of a one-way street. Once you mod the device, you've basically put your firmware updates into the hands of the devs/modders in XDA. That's not a bad thing, but you just have to keep that in mind - we are usually pretty fast in ripping apart new stock ROMs and added them to our mods.

If you want to stick with stock, however, you can also manually install new ROMs. We post them also, when the released updates show up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000

BTW TO ALL WOOT USERS HERE. I'm finding it hard to keep up with all the questions, right now. If I miss a question, it's not because I'm ignoring you - I'm trying to toggle this, XDA and my day job and I'm finding it challenging. Quite frankly, there's just too many of you.

If you have an XDA account, you might want to post your questions there, as well. That way, another XDA power user can respond back, if I don't see it.

The G-tab was $300 at Woot(Much closer to $400 at other retailers) and the Asus tab is $400. Where do you get $150 difference from? Honestly, if this thing comes out in the next few weeks, look for my GTab on Ebay. It will be the Brand New never used one as I am waiting for a replacement from Viewsonic.

I don't think woot would even take mine back now that its been rooted.

Woot! First time poster.

I agree that ASUS is pretty awesome. But honestly, I believe we are in the midst of genesis with tablets. We could wait for the launch of the ASUS Transformer, but I'll guarantee that there will be an even better tablet coming out in the next three weeks. Terrible screen or not I can't wait for my Gtablet as it will easily hold me over for at least a year. At that point we'll have tablets that'll make the transformer look like paperweight. That's life for ya.

Mine is out for delivery. I'm gonna skip the gym today afterwork and play with my new toy instead.

I was kinda hoping I would get lucky and it would've come in a day early, since when I got to work yesterday there was a power outage and we were sent home. My free day would've been nicely topped off with my gtab. Oh well, I'll make up for it today.

Got mine yesterday but didn't check it out till this morning. It came perfectly new, everything about it shiny and clean. I like it as is really, other than the market place. I can hack around and mod if I want, I am an I.T. guy, but I do not like doing I.T. like things on my off hours. There is no way to get the marketplace on the stock ROM? There is no way to get it installed without jumping through hoops? I installed the ClockWorkMod, there is no way to get the Marketplace installed via the clockwork mod or did I miss something in the 50+ pages here?

Also, can we use something bigger than a 16gb MicroSD?

Depends on where you live I suppose.

For me, the Gtab is $285.00 The Asus would be $400 + 7.5% tax = $430.00. So, a difference of $145.00.

Even if the ASUS comes out next week, the GTAB is a well established product with a lot of development. and it's $100 cheaper, which is nothing to sneeze at. At $285, I personally think the GTAB is still a good deal.

The ASUS is going to have HC, an IPS screen an 1GB of RAM - so those are all improvements over the GTAB (especially the screen). But I bet their HC iteration will be buggy, because the Xooms is right now. It will take some time to stabilize, I bet. And we have no idea how "open" it will be - HC has been difficult to deal with so far because Google hasn't released the AOSP yet. There are things on the GTAB right now that you can't use on the Xoom, like the microSD card. And even using a USB thumb drive is built into the GTAB vs needing a hack and a OTG cable for the Xoom. The ASUS might have bugs we don't even know about yet (or it could be fantastic, who knows?).

In 2 or 3 months, the GTAB will definitely look a bit ancient, mainly due to the 1024x600 screen. But right now, TODAY, its a good deal. In electronics, there is always something better coming along. You can't escape that.

That is where I get the $150 number from you can't forget about tax. $150 is a 50%+ increase in price from $285 so that's a big deal.

I'm with you. I actually like the tablet as is (no rooting as of yet). But the G-Market sucks hard (and not in a good way). I've learn to by pass it altogether by using the website:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android

And I pulled the amazon appstore.apk from my phone (since you don't get that in Android market anyway), and installed it on my tab. Amazon Appstore for Android carries the much of the same stuff as Android Market. And if you already bought stuff there, it stays there (in the cloud), thus I could install Angry Birds Rio on my G-Tab with no problems. It doesn't have everything that Android Market has but it's pretty darn close.

According to the Viewsonic page you can put a microSD card up to 32Gb if you want.

I'm too lazy for signatures... oh, okay not completely lazy.

I literally ran into the delivery guy as I left for work this morning! So I've plugged it in to charge it at work, but I haven't turned it on yet. You have no idea how much control that takes after waiting for it all of this time. Or maybe you do. Anyway, when I turn my new Gtab for the first time, is it going to make some musical noise or TADA like Windows does? I'm in the office, and I don't want my new toy to attract too much attention ... Yet. Thanks

After two hours of charging, waiting for the green light I finally just turned it on. Battery was at 98%.

I agree with others that the screen tilted up or down is pretty crummy. Left and right seems fine to me. I'd have no issue sharing a movie with someone on it.

I hit something that brought me to the Dashboard Home page. Now I've got to Google to figure out how to get back to the "Classic" page.

Edit: Duh. There's an icon for it under "more".

Saw a comment you made over on XDA about opening your G-Tablet and the speakers never sounding the same. I am wondering how extensive a tear down you did? I bought one for my wife and there is a small flake of dust or ash trapped between the glass and the LCD. In your tear down, could you tell if the glass was bonded to the LCD? If not can you share some tips about the disassembly process?

Thanks

According to the G-Tab user manual (downloaded from the Woot blog) you can put up to a 64GB microSD card in it. I have not confirmed it, but I'm hoping. It also says the internal memory (normally 16GB) can be up to 32GB, but I have no idea how.

Someone on XDA had a teardown, but very quickly: You obviously will void your warranty.

You'd need to take off the rubber feet in the back, and that exposes 4 screws. Take those off. Then use an iPod plastic pryer to pry open the device, right at that middle split (there are clamps holding it together, so its tricky). You need to take the entire system board out to get to the LCD, and if that speck is between the LCD and the front screen, you might be able to get to it.

Be careful putting it back together, document everything. The speaker wire seems a bit flimsy and you have to make sure the clamps don't touch them when you put it back together. It's a little tricky.

k000 wrote:@Roebeet - so is it straight fwd to flash back to Stock ? Would it void warranty/return ;) ?

I think its straightforward- use clockworkmod to flash a stock ROM, and you'll have stock. Mods probably void the warranty, but if you needed to RMA something I would just flash it back to stock first to cover your butt.

I agree 100%. I haven't received mine yet, maybe tomorrow, but I'm thinking about not even opening it and returning it...if that's possible. Can I do that?

I just don't get it. Especially on a "NEW" product, and so many people getting used devices with smudges and scratches.

I'm losing a lot of confidence in woot.

I'm not sure I will ever buy again, and I haven't received my product yet.

I don't care if I get a brand new one that works great...it's not fair to the people that get defective ones, and woot seems to have a reputation for this.

This is why I have not bought a TV from them.

It's stuff like this that makes me think it's worth spending the extra 100, 200, or even 300 dollars on more reliable merchandise and not having to wait a while to receive your product or have to send it back.

I'd be at the casino if I wanted to gamble.

Woot is getting shady, or maybe they have always been shady...
