Got my second batch 4.1 lb shipment. Looks new to me.

Has all the typical issues that most everyone else has. So it looks like I'm going to be good to go.

I can understand why Staples recalled these things. There's no way Viewsonic should have put their name to these things as retail units. THe software is way too horrible.

On another note, the screen res stinks as well as the viewing angles, but for the price certainly something that can be managed. The only downside is the Wi-Fi constantly cycling. If I can't get that to stabilize, this thing has to go back. I'm not buying three new routers because of this thing.

In case it wasn't blindingly obvious to someone else, in order to install TNT Lite, you need:

update.zip in gtab's root directory
command in gtab's recovery directory

I somehow missed that in all of the instructions, and just looped the startup several times until I started poking about.

And a long overdue thanks to roebeet. Not only as a developer, but as someone who stepped up, and exposed him/herself to us masses at woot.

Do I need to do the wipe step again to 4.4?
Not a big deal if I do

You should be OK, but I would recommend backing up anything important first, just in case (ie Titanium Backup is a great tool).

I released 4.4 specifically to mitigate the sleep issue. But I did test it with a data wipe.

Had this for a day now. Glad it can play flash but otherwise it's clunky and the furthest thing from my ipad, not even in the same league.

The Handango apps store is a joke! Seriously bad!

Not sure even investing the time to "rom" it or "root" it or whatever it's called is worth it. What would I gain by doing this? Thanks in advance for answering that for me.

Ok, cool.

I wiped data just to be sure (besides, not much important on there after only a hour or so)

4.4 is perfect. Sleep mode works. This thing is very much worth 280 bucks.

Thanks again, Roebeet!

It's definitely finicky with routers, and the wireless driver was NOT touched between 3389 and 3588 builds. Suggestions:

- Do a user data wipe. Can't hurt and might clean things up. Wifi settings like your supplicant config are in your user data.
- Change the channel on your router (at least as a test). I used to need that on an old tablet of mine (not the GTAB).
- Turn off security (just as a test). For example, the GTAB might not like your WPA2 setup, but you won't know that unless you turn off security to see how that works.

Btw, as a reference: I have a FIOS Actiontec that I use for testing, with WEP (yes, WEP is bad but it's just a test device), and then my Cicso 160N DDR-WRT'd router is the "real" router, with WPA2 and no issues with my GTablet.

Good luck!

This is my 1st android device so I'm working on coming up to speed on it with this updated 3588 stock rom. Therefore, I'm starting easy & safe but will try more like XDA's mods & custom roms as I get comfortable with the new environment.

I was hoping to download a few easy free items from safe places & let the system install them like I've read & watched in videos before I start registering at places to buy apps next.

Since I saw it running on a youtube viewsonic gtablet video, I was hoping for my 1st download & install to be Kittehface's Snowfall free live wallpaper so if anyone has any recommendations for safe places folks are comfortable in getting android items, then I would appreciate hearing about your thoughts & experiences.

I went to gtab's preloaded gMarket Handango to look for the snowfall wallpaper, but could only find Kittehface's Lightning. When I selected to download it, I was confused which of 3 options to select when it offered me download to a pc, send to email, or SMS I think for phone. Also, Viewsonic gTablet was not in the list of android devices but it was supported on Android 1.6 or later.

I've done some PC google searches & I think I found & downloaded the APK for the snowfall live wallpaper from the mediafire web page like I've downloaded some of roebeet's stuff from. I went back with the gTablet to the same mediafire web page & tried downloading the APK which I figured would go thru that auto install process too, but I think a mediafire real estate popup web page got in the way so I only received an htm file.

I don't know if I can just do a USB connection between the PC & gTablet to transfer the APK & figure out how to install it or boot & let it auto install the APK if it does not do it right away.

Any help, advice, recommendations, and or experiences is much appreciated.

I see a lot of people here have decided on VEGAn, and I would like to put my two cents in that it's a very solid ROM and a lot of users have enjoyed it since it's initial release. I was involved in part of the creation of VEGAn, but devs gojimi and rothnic did the bulk of the work with it and should be commended. A lot of the fixes in VEGAn, like the g-sensor hack, eventually found their way into TNT Lite, thanks to gojimi's help.

It completely removes the TnT interface and replaces it with a UI taken from the Advent VEGA. What's interesting about this is that Viewsonic's own Viewpad 10s actually LOOKS like the VEGAn build, and it's a clone of the Advent VEGA. Go figure!

The great thing about this device is that you have a number of mod options - I would recommend that you try them all!

maintrain wrote:Mine was doing it with 4.4 as well as with stock. I did an RMA for a replacement.

? You should go back to stock and confirm it there, first. It could just be an issue with the mod + the vendor might not honor a warranty with a mod on it.

The sleep issue is mitigated with TNTL 4.4, but that doesn't mean it's 100% gone.

I would suggest you go back to stock AND wipe the user data, just to get as close to a clean build as you can. If the problem persists, then maybe it's hardware. Also contact Viewsonic CS just to make sure it's not a bug in 3588 (I don't think it is, but they would know better than I).

Mine is fully charged and up and running.
I set it up, updated to 3588 and installed Amazon Appstore, signed in and installed Angry Birds Rio etc.. Everything is working flawlessly with Tap&Tap.

Only issue I did have was when I put a 16gb SD card in it told me it was damaged and to format, I tried 3 time to format it and it would, so I popped it in the PC and did the format there then back in the GTAB and it worked fine.

Just debating on rooting it or not???

You can install apks a few ways: copying to your internal memory from a USB mount (and then just click on in EStrongs to run it), via Dropbox, or even via the adb sdk.

I use the adb in the sdk, and it's just easier for me. Like this; "adb install nameoffile.apk". Adb is a GREAT tool, but it takes some learning.

For AB and VEGAn, I dont remember if VEGAn has the "mount with SD card" issue - it might. Try this:

- Mount the device via USB, so that way the internal storage is automatically unmounted on the device.
- Run the AB install. It might work this time.

If it works, its because AB is trying to install on the SD card, which used to be a problem. This is the "trick" to get around that.

As for the Market, did you do the Market hack? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845175

Im on Vegan; Dolphin works fine for me.

Been running up to 5 tabs and its not crashed once.
Been watching things on youtube, facebook, megavideo, etc.

Most likely whatever you installed isn't the latest build. Try a different build or another ROM.

That same thing happened to me. Try getting right by your router and then see if it works. If it doesn't work go to security and do a factory reset and try again. This will wipe the pre-installed apps but don't worry they are on your flash drive and you can just reinstall them. So once you can get on to the network you should update your Rom through the system update tool. The problem does not happen on the new Rom.

I would argue that, even if you don't have any issues, you should STILL do a data wipe. It wipes all the data apps, but I've been told that there's a MASTER folder where all these apps can be reinstalled.

If I had gotten one of these, I would 1) verify that the app apks are in that master folder and 2) wipe it (factory reset) . I wouldnt even wait for issues to pop up. My 2 cents.

This requires installing clockworkmod correct?

Well I got mine this morning charged it up and everything seems fine. I do have one dead pixel and wonder if it's even worth complaining woot about it. Sure I would love a new one but this unit updated and installed everything fine the first try. If I get a new unit there is no guarantee that it wont have a dead pixel or have problems updating. This isn't a woot problem but a manufacturing defect woot is is just selling them.

The other way to think of is I paid $275.00 for my daughters Ipod touch 32gb and I can tell you that angry birds and a few other things I have used work much faster on the tablet than the touch. Is this thing perfect heck no, but I'm going to enjoy it a lot more then an Ipod touch or Ipad.

Did you temporarily make your SSID visible? Just entering your SSID name and PW will cause WIFI to cycle between connect and disconnect. Making SSID visible will allow it to lock. Once locked, make SSID invisible. It worked for me and hasn't been necessary to make visible again.

I think the easiest way is to pick email (assuming you use gmail or some other web-based mail). Then just click the attachment and it should install.

Edit Update: Easiest way is from the tablet, pick "download to computer" and it'll download directly to the tablet. Then click the notification in the upper right to install.
