Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

Voted 90's just for Seinfeld..

..was tempted to vote 00's for Big Bang Theory though.

Voted 90's because of Married with Children, Home Improvement and Seinfield. Even though Married with children was started in 87 I count it as 90's because a majority of the show was in the 90's.

As I pondered the options (it was seriously heavy and depthy pondering, I'm telling you), memories of growing up with Nick at Nite black and white reruns and my love for Green Acres loomed all sudden-like. When it comes to sitcoms, no other option is clickable: 50s-60s. Damned emotional memory reaction. I may (I will) change my mind a few dozen times over the next twenty-four hours.

I rose in rainy autumn and walked abroad in a shower of all my days.

00's there is so many choices! They green lighted so many shows that they had to get some winners in there sometime. I voted 00's because its it what's on the most, and 'Lost' is probably my favorite show ever.

'90s. I can't stand most of the newer sitcoms. The humor changed so much in 10 years

What a bunch of wee lasses you are.

The 70s:
All in the Family (Archie Bunker)
The Mary Tyler Moor Show
M*A*S*H
The Bob Newhart Show (the 1st one)
The Jeffersons
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
WKRP in Cincinnati
Taxi
Barney Miller
The Odd Couple

Higher prices AND crappier blanks, no thank you

Does Arrested Development count as a sitcom? It was way ahead of its time.

But also, between the Office, 30 Rock, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation, all of which started in the last decade, I voted the 00s.

...and Friends. Amen on the rest, more or less (Home Improvement was a bit sappy for me), but Friends is the greatest sitcom to every grace a screen, in my opinion.

Add Soap and good Times to this list and we have a winner! Many of these challenged the status quo, and sought to reflect and influence social mores. Most prior programing merely re-enforced conformity.

As someone already said - the '70's

All in the Family (Archie Bunker)
The Mary Tyler Moor Show
M*A*S*H (this only should be enough)
The Bob Newhart Show (the 1st one)
The Jeffersons
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
WKRP in Cincinnati
Taxi
Barney Miller
The Odd Couple
Sanford and Son

Name that many great sitcoms in any other decade. Sure there are great sitcoms in each one, but to vote for an entire decade because of one show no matter how great it is is silly. Sure Seinfeld can be discussed as the greatest of all time, but that does not trump an entire decade.

The Desi Arnaz Show (Lucille Ball)
The Honeymooners (Jackie Gleason)

These two alone make all other decades FAIL

The 80's had a few shows going for it, but the 90's cleaned house. I like Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond in addition to most of the aforementioned winners.

You voted 90s most likely because you weren't around for the truly groundbreaking sitcoms of the 70s, like M*A*S*H, All In The Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Happy Days, etc. Believe me, Seinfeld ranks among the top 5 ever, I agree, but the 70s had more great comedies.

I actually can't stand Seinfeld. I was born too late to watch and understand the 70's sitcoms, but many were in syndication in the 80's, and the 70's easily had the best sicoms

If there's a toast and the cry of Cheers goes out, you'll still here a quiet Sienfeld shortly after...

Sienfeld might be the best thinking mans sitcom if it were not for M*A*S*H.

Other slapstick sitcoms are more a dime a dozen, but I can't recall a better decade than the '70's, I understand the last 2 superbowls had greater viewers than the M*A*S*H final show, thats a pretty remarkable feat!

I vote for Jack Benny, Burns & Allen, and Ernie Kovacs, though his wasn't really a sitcom.

It was way tough picking between the 90's and the 00's. Seinfeld is the end all be all for me as far as sitcoms go, but I couldn't really remember any other shows that were that great.

2000's on the other hand provided us with The Office, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Arrested Development (even though that didn't last), and who couldn't forget the gem that is Two and a Half Men? lol

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but eh.

To me, the 70s (ALL IN THE FAMILY, MARY HARTMAN, SANFORD & SON, WKRP, SOAP) and the 90s (ROSEANNE, SEINFELD, THE SIMPSONS, THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW) both make a strong case. Both eras saw some titanic shows take the whole form for a sharp turn and change it forever.

But for variety, depth, intelligence, and pure laughs, the high points of the 00s win it, for me. CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, THE OFFICE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, 30 ROCK, MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, and the bulk of KING OF THE HILL and FUTURAMA - and that's just American TV. Throw in 00s UK shows like THE OFFICE, SAXONDALE, THE IN-BETWEENERS, EXTRAS, and SPACED and the choice is even more obvious.

The current decade is off to a good start, with MODERN FAMILY, EASTBOUND & DOWN, PARTY DOWN, BORED TO DEATH, and PARKS & RECREATION. But we'll see...

(By "sitcom", I mean any half-hour TV comedy with continuing characters - so not sketch comedy like MR. SHOW, THE CHAPPELLE SHOW, or THE KIDS IN THE HALL.)

The only sitcom that matters is the boghog Van Dyke show. I think that's been scientifically proven somewhere but I can't be bothered to look up the journal citation.
