Out of the box its known to be like that, if you aren't going to Flesh the rom its not worth having. And don't bother comparing it to an Ipad that is twice the price.

I have a nook and personally I could never see replacing it with something that doesn't have an Eink display, as for speed/page turns I'd assume it'd be almost instantaneous considering the tegra 2 beast powering it.

Take the time to hack it and recalibrate the screen. It's well worth the time. I love my tablet!

$179 and you got yourself a deal. Looks like these are already selling for $299 (only $20 savings) at other retailers.

It's not recommended that you use the pre-installed software. It's a shadow of android OS and should be rooted and swapped out with a full blown ROM. Buyer beware, if you are not planning on trying to root this thing then do not expect the device to be anywhere near the quality and performance of an iPAD....if you are willing to do a little tweaking then this is an incredible bargain considering the hardware specs...compare them to the ipad 2!

Why buy one if you already have an IPad. Anyway, update it, then turn off Tap-N-Tap. Alternatively, root it and install TNT or Cyanogenmod.

I've been waiting for the Woot Off so I could grab one of these. New toy!

Compared to a true e-book reader like the Kindle (well, compared to the Kindle), it's $140 more, over 50% bigger, substantially heavier, has ~1/10th the battery life if that, can't be read in sunlight, etc. If books are your main interest, I really recommend just getting a Kindle.

On the other hand, it does beautifully as a comics reader with the Perfect Viewer app, works well for image-heavy PDFs, and it does offer several competing stores worth of ebook apps, so if you must read ebooks on it, it...works, I guess.

Just came by to ditto those who say this thing rocks. Picked it up on the last sale, flashed in VEGAn-TAB no problem (the guides are human-proof. I'd never even touched android before or flashed a ROM).

The thing is blazing fast, the touch screen is good, and honeycomb is right around the corner. At this price, it's a steal after about 1/2 hour of tinkering.

Got mine last week. Which ROM is better VEGAn Tab or TnT-lite? Why do you like it better?

Warning: don't buy this if you aren't going to Flesh it.

edit: Why does woot keep changing f-l-a-s-h to flesh?

Went in for two, and my brother-in-law got one. I gave the second one to my wife's brother too. Anyhow....
GREAT device once you root it, and pick the ROM of your choice. Learning curve was 2 hours, and now can almost do it in my sleep.

I've put kindle & B/N Reader on, sold my Nook today! Also had the WD TV device which I sold today, after buying the HDMI port adapter. The device is fast and easy to deal with. From everything I read Honeycomb will run on it once out. I've upgraded to Gingerbread with no issue, the apps out there mostly work, enough so that if one doesn't work you can find the same thing. Have made calls on Fring, played enough Angry birds, and watched movies/ MP4, and Divx, music etc. Anyhow for those on the fence, you can get this and dump a lot of other gadgets. Happy Wooting!

It's great! Provided you don't plan on reading in direct sunlight. LCD screens aren't conducive to that. Many ereader apps are available, but I use Aldiko. Pulled in all of my pdfs & epubs w/ covers into a bookshelf. Plus it has settings for day/night (black txt/white background or white txt/black background).

I got this the last time it was up on Woot, and haven't regretted the purchase for a second. It's an awesome piece of hardware, which moving to TnTLite really highlights.

There's lots of support in the old thread, highlighted by others, so go there when you're ready to root.

Got one, same price, from the Mar 23 Woot - Comments are here: (http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4394837)

Loving it. It's fantastic and soooo fast!

It is very sound advice to root it immediately (upgrade the operating system). I put VEGan-TAB Beta 5 on it, but there are other ROMs available. It took longer to read about than to do it.

Here are the best places to get started, from xda-developers:
GTablet Informational Forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=841

FAQ: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008245

Enjoy!

Note: I also have the Nook Color and have played around with the various android installs based on 2.2, 2.4, and 3.0. It's about the same price and fanstastic as well - with benefits like smaller size and crisper display - but it's not even close on speed. It really depends on what you want. But in either case, once you upgrade the OS, you have a tablet that is comparable to things costing hundreds more on the market.

got one last time around and had it for a week now. the stock user interface is horrible and slows the machine down considerably. the XDA Developers website has a ton of information to help you. now that I've re-worked it with the stock android op sys, it works great!

I love mine as an alternate Kindle. I still prefer Kindle for pleasure reading (or reading things that are pure prose), but when it comes to books that use code or lots of figures/pictures, I use my G Tablet.

I love this thing. Typing from it now in fact. Haven't even had it a week yet but it feels like a month with the amount of time I've spent on it. If you do buy it just know the stock ROM is good but laggy. I rooted it and used VEGAn 5.1 instead.

Glad you feel that way (and felt the need to say it twice), sell it and move on, it sounds like the iPad is perfect for you. It takes a very small amount of time to read up on these and do a slight amount of work and it's 1/2 the price without that pos iTunes.

Great Tablet, I messed around with it a bit and tried Vegan & TNT-Lite, both work good, but the functionality of TNT-Lite matched my phone, so I stuck with that. Unbelievably faster than the stock OS. Easy as pie to do (actually pie is not that easy, this was MUCH easier). Point I'm trying to make is if you're thinking about it, pull the trigger before it's gone. I get more functionality out of this now than my friend's Ipad (at half the price).

In for one!!!!
As soon as it arrives I will visit XDA developers and get the appropriate ROM!
512 ram makes this a cut above some of the other low cost tablets and worth "tweaking".
Definately ready for Honeycomb when released.

in for one. I already have an Android phone, and love it.

Was messing around with a friend's iPad2 (16gb + 3g version) and was wondering all the while... $600+ .. really??????

yes, it looks nice, and has great accessories, and all that... but for the price point, this is the way to go.

XDA devs, here I come...again...

You will be able to upgrade, when the code for Honeycomb becomes available. This device is extremely easy to upgrade with some very basic tech knowledge.

Bought this last time around....I'm not impressed. Also it tended to crash a lot running youtube videos...so I flashed it with a ROM from XDA Developers....that made things much better...and I did the Market place trick after flashing...

The view sonic image has removed Andriod Market place and replaced with their own and they also emoved the Gogle Account synce so you can't download form Android Market unless you plan to Flesh it....which fortunately is very simple.
