Sony blames woot for "keeping it in inventory so long" but as a computer professional I know this is a crock. Why the hell can't they design the unit so the firmware can be updated more than one rev at a time? I figure I may be out of the country like I am frequently on business and unless I have thing thing plugged in, powered on with WiFi access, I may miss a firmware rev and get screwed while it is no longer under warranty. Bogus deal.

Just got off the phone with Sony, I asked him specifically about what I would be getting. He said:

We are sending out brand new units with the latest firmware.

Of course depending on the date of purchase. Within 30 days you get a new one.

I have a hardware problem with mine.

I deleted my Woot apps thanks to this crap and the fact that I have no other option than Smartpost.
Smartpost is such a PITA (my dash was picked up by USPS from FedEx 20 miles from here on Thursday at 6 am, and it again didn't show up with my mail today, Monday. We, the Hitchhikers are they doing between picking it up and delivering it?)

Woot, it was fun for a little while, not so fun for some more time, and now it has run it's course. Thanks for all the fish!

Edit: it took over one week to make the last 25 miles!!!

you should call fedex smartpost directly, I had the same problem as you, so I called on Saturday and was told they can trace the package (although this will take up to 72 hours) Lo and behold, I now have an updated screen that says shipment information sent to USPS......not quite as good as a confirmed date of delivery, but at least now I have some peace of mind that my item wasn't lost in transit. Now, as far as receiving a decent, working Dash, that's a whole other issue I'll deal with when I get the damn thing.....

There is no conspiracy. My second Dash, this one from Newegg, arrived today and it was packed exactly the same as the Woot one. Shrinkwrap outside the box, Dash inside a gray antistatic bag, no film on the screen.

Does anyone know of a compelling reason to RMA a Dash at this point? Are there actual hardware issues or is this just Sony's crappy R&D?

/Why can't Sony Consumer Electronics learn from their broadcast division? Their broadcast gear is quite good, usually well though-out and well-supported. Their consumer gear seems to be a half-hearted effort and Sony still seems to have its head up its arse and make entirely closed/entirely different standards from the rest of the world.

So, does your Newegg Dash have the 1.0.1111 problem, or are they shipping with the more current firmware?

I love my dash.

However it's been acting up and I am wondering if others had the same issue and if there is a solution.

My dash freezes. A few days ago it froze while on the main screen displaying the time.

Last night it froze sometime after a netflix movie finished. It was stuck on a black Sony dash loading interface. However the alarm still alerted and the screen updated at the bottom. Though touching the screen did nothing. I hit the snooze button and that seemed to work.

Both the Woot and Newegg ones I got had newer firmware, but it wouldn't have mattered to me if they didn't, since the update files and procedure had already been documented. In fact, Sony just posted an announcement and file link for 1.0.1111 owners.

Better late than never. Mine works, time to stop beating the horse, it's been dead for a while now.

Sony's excessively late response and Woot's utter, complete failure to address the issue at all will most definitely influence my future buying decisions, though.

It's April 27th - 16 days since I ordered this product. Still shows in transit. Shows sitting in a post office 10 miles away for 6 days now. I would like to ask woot, does fedex smart post mean you pay almost next to nothing, and it gets delivered to me whenever fed ex just happens to be driving by my house for a package in which the vendor paid actual shipping fees?

Woot you suck. And people need to know. Maybe I should start a blog.

I think the people who cared about Woot cashed out when they sold to Amazon. Judging by their "service" people, they don't hire for quality anymore.

I've seen several people here say they're bailing on Woot after this experience. Woot hasn't responded with a bit of genuine interest or sympathy. I have removed the Woot-checking apps and bookmarks. If there's a great deal on Slickdeals, I'll still link over and buy it. But my days of waiting for the next Woot are over.

It was fun while it lasted but the writing was on the wall when they were bought by Amazon. Whatever, it's not like there aren't a gob of other sites doing the same thing now.

Woot stinks, Sony stinks more.

After getting a seriously broken Chumby, 3 hours online with Chumby chat to get it to work, and a similarly seriously broken Sony Dash, it's clear what Woot's business model is.

If a snarky customer service drone refutes the fact that Woot just buys cheap crap that might or might not be broken and sells it untested, they should ask their boss to ask their boss to ask their boss to just fess up. It's clear, it's legal, but it stinks.

In the end, after wasting a ton of time looking through these 15 pages of forum posts for a fix, I finally got mine working. If you need to get a replacement, call Amazon to escalate. 1-800-201-7575. Don't bother calling Sony, they don't even know how to fix their own devices. And "they" refers to Phillipino women who don't know a USB plug from a phone jack.

Bye Woot.

FWIW, I received my new "remediated" Dash today via Fedex. The Bill of Lading shows a "standard overnight" ship method - so at least Sony didn't "smart post" them back to us.

Haven't opened it up yet - but it's good to have my device back.

Got mine 4/19. 1.0.1111 firmware. Called Sony and got a call tag for FedEx Ground back to Laredo, Texas. Texas got it 4/27. No acknowledgment, but my work order number shows (www.sony.com/support) that "the unit is with a technician" and it can take "10 working days" to resolve my issue.

At this rate, I'll be lucky to have this whole sordid matter resolved by Memorial Day (2011, I hope).

Neither Sony nor Woot! have appointed themselves well in this matter.

Cruletech, congrats on your prompt resolution. Wish I were so lucky!

Mine already arrived at the Laredo return center. Don't know how long until the send the other one.

Mine had a unique (apparently) problem. Touch screen sensitivity was greatly reduced on the right edge of the screen.

making the right option arrow in the dashboard screen not functional. Also, the stop button in the Shoutcast stations, and the letter P in the keyboard, did not work either.

To test your touch screen for this problem, go to the toolbox icon, press device info, and press diagnostics. At the bottom of the page ( you most really look is small text) you will see a line that says:

Touch: No event (something like that)

Ass soon as you touch the screen, this will change to some coordinates(numbers) of where your finger is and " amplitude " a number that register the pressure you apply to the screen.

My thumb with regular but constant pressure on the right side of my Dash, will only get an amplitude of 14-22. but when moved out to any other area of the screen, it would yield an amplitude of 50-80.

I explained all this to Sony CS, and he issued the RMA (told me to wait 24 hours for it too).

Ill stick to Woot a little bit longer, I'll just will be mindful of it not being Newegg.

The reason we buy Woot is because they don't do returns, so they don't charge us the premium to finance such returns. some of you have forgotten this.

Now about Sony, they have their plate full right now with all the hacking they are going through. Recalling a product kills its reputation.
So instead of collecting every single dash out there, is more efficient that the customer to buy the product, test it him/herself and if good that is the end of that(for free, instead of having it shipped to Sony and pay a tech).

If bad, well, you know, CS calls, troubleshooting, then shipping unit, testing& repair, shipped back... All this while warranty clock ticks.
For a corporation this is a no brainer. Just deal with the bad units, found by the customers. It makes more financial sense than to make a recall, and test every Dash in the market good or bad with no cash coming in.

I believe this is standard practice. The only recalls this days are about issues that can kill you(Cars, food, ect).

That was the reason I went for it and bought it.

I have not checked the forums about it. I don't have the Dash with me, so I'm not in a hurry to find out if it's ready. But if they don't roll one out at all, I'll be super pissed.

With all the Sony issues, a browser for a not-so-popular device ranks low in their list.

Seems like for every company that manufactures a product, there are those blind supporters who call everyone else silly for expecting the company to care about their customers. Looks like the same holds true for Woot.

Will this thing wash my dishes for me? If not, it's useless. What about connecting it to my car for a turbo boost so I can rocket into space? Does it have a cloaking mode? Can I use the USB to power it with my dilithium crystals?

My Dash replacement arrived on 04/24/11.

It was new, as I told it would be by Sony.
Did not have the latest firmware contrary to what I was told it would have, but it updated OK.
Registered Ok.
Touch screen sensitivity is even across the screen unlike the original.

The feature that pleased me the most in video:

Crackle, movies and TV shows free with limited commercial interruptions (30 sec. spots, must of them are promos about available shows in crackle).

For audio:

Shoutcast, look for Internet radio by genre free, w/out signing into anything.

Right now the only complaint is loading times and navigation wonky-ness, which I hope to remedy by improving my WIFI.

-I made my peace with all the wait.
-I'm working on getting over the dash reappearing in Woot $10 cheaper 1 month and 10 days later (felt like a slap in the face).
-I'm trying to forget about the main reason I made this purchase (Mother's Day Browser Promise). So I can enjoy what I have, and not lament what I don't.

Is anyone having issues with the most recent Sony firmware update? My only 2 month old dash started acting erratic yesterday. After contacting Sony and trying to do a factory restore (which didnt work) i was told i need to send in the unit for repair.
Here;s the kicker: since I just cant live without my sony dash ( rolling eyes) i decided to purchase one from a local shop, after starting it up I received a update notice. Low and behold, the BRAND new Dash is exhibiting similar behaviors as my woot purchased one. What T F?!?!?! behaviors like will not stay in power save mode. Switches randomly from home screen to time/date screen.
Anyone else experiencing this? I am so close to calling Sony and telling them off. The original Dash i received from Woot was DOA with the bad firmware load as so many others experienced.

Mine did a little bit of everything. It did update, but it had a touche screen problem. Low sensitivity on the right side. I sent it to some and within a month I had a new one.
The only thing about the second one is that has crashed and rebooted when trying to access some YouTube videos, but it had only happened twice. They were very far apart incidents. So I'm not worried.

If you have a lack of response or lag, you must improve your wifi.Get closer to you router. Get a better router. Or just ad a cheap router to the back of your existing router, to extend the coverage in your home (set a different channels of course). A little google-ing will teach you how to do this.

Send it to Sony. I did it within days of receiving it. So within a month (Sony rep. told me) you get a new one.

You had it for 2 so I don't know, but you must deal with Sony ASAP.

And I have not forgotten about the Mothers Day Browser Promise.
Anybody at Woot! remember who told them about this?
So I can go talk to them.
