I'm also debating this and the "special" Kindle because the Kindle is new and has a longer battery life. Also, with the Calibre software, it seems that the Kindle will work with all these other formats people are saying sets the Nook apart.

Decisions, decisions. I've heard a lot of arguments FOR the Nook, would love to hear some for the Kindle instead.

Some things I *don't* like and clarifications:

- I wish I could subscribe to RSS feeds other than having the option to pay for a very limited selection of them through BN. Rooting the device offers this option; I haven't done it.

- The instructions say the screen can't tolerate temperatures below freezing or above 120 degrees, and not to leave it in the car. I've had it in my bag in NYC in late December and in my trunk in Louisiana in late July; but, y'know, stress.

- It does run android, but the e-paper screen's refresh rate is far too low for any kind of animation other than, say, blink. My understanding is most of the apps available add functionality supporting the product as an e-reader.

- The audio player is extremely simplistic, and lacks certain functionality that would make it better suited to audio books.

- Categorizing books could be more elegant. You can sort books into "shelves," but they still appear on the main screen. You also can't do this sorting on the computer or Web, which would be far easier. I don't know if Kindle does this better.

- I have a close friend with a Kindle. We tried each others' devices. They're both great. He likes the Kindle better. I prefer the Nook.

- Expect to find as an ebook anything you can find in, say, your local book store. Now really think about that. That's a very different selection from what you'd find on, say, Amazon. Missing is pretty much anything published between 1923 and 2006 or so that isn't either a) still in print or b) was a huge blockbuster. This seems to be the same for Amazon & Kobo, suspect it has to do with licensing restrictions, because with overhead so low, you'd think publishers would be racing to release their enormous back catalogs of remaindered works.

- My buddy eventually went from a Kindle to an iPad in order to read comic books. He likes it, but says it's a very different experience.

- To reiterate, if you think (as many online reviewers seem to), that this is a clunky tablet, you will be disappointed. It's a single purpose device, and it performs that purpose beautifully.

- BN makes a featured book available for download every Friday, but they're usually terrible. Occasionally they'll do other promotions for free classics (like good, relatively recent stuff, not just recycling pre-1923 Google Books/archive.org junk).

Oh, almost forgot. Baen Books has a free library where they offer titles from a LOT of name authors. They're mostly older titles, but occasionally they'll give away newer books. Lois McMaster Bujold's most recent Vorkosigan book, Cryoburn, had a disc in the back with just about the entire Vorkosigan backlist *and* the new book, and encouraged you to share the books with your friends.

On the site, the ebooks available in many formats, including the .epub.

The site is baen.com/library.

You might be able to buy Amazon ebooks, strip the DRM and convert them to Nook format.

The easier way would be to buy the same book from Google's online bookstore instead.

Not a problem. The Nook uses .epub format, and it's not proprietary. Several readers can read .epub, and other sellers and public libraries use .epub.

While I think you could be kidding with me, you have re-alerted my paranoia.

I literally spend weeks (sometimes months) deciding on a new electronic device. I returned a Sony MP3 player because it had removed some of my favorite menu items from a previous Sony MP3 player I owned (menu items I believed were CRUCIAL for using the player while driving.)

My birthday's coming up Saturday and my plan was to get a pre-ordered $115 Kindle (Don't care about the ads, they don't interrupt reading and reading is how I'll spend the majority of my time on the device) and then this had to pop up on Woot throwing the entire plan into disarray.

To compound the matter, I see people talking about file formats and things and I'd hate to be on the wrong end of a file format war (ATRAC, anyone?).

This puts my mind at ease and I believe I'll simply wait for the Kindle.

I just started using Calibre to convert LIT into ePUB and there are some formatting errors, so don't expect perfect conversions. This is especially true of PDFs that makes heavy use of graphics and tables.

Before everyone buys up the "public libraries can give me free books" idea.

Go to Overdrive.com and look up your local library's collection of Ebooks. I was THOROUGHLY disappointed in my two. They still abide by the idea that they can only check-out a certain number of copies of each book as if they were physical books! Every book I was remotely interested in was only available for "adding to my waitlist"...zzzzzz

I doubt Woot will sell out of these soon. Take a couple hours and peruse the ebook listings before you buy a reader.

Yes. The 1st Gen Nook is nothing compared to the current Kindle. That color area becomes your keyboard too (touch screen), but because of the plastic surrounding it, it's very cumbersome to use.

We have 5 Kindles in my family. We love them. The biggest advantage over the Nook is Amazon's customer service. If you need your Kindle replaced, even if you are at fault (dropped it, etc), you will have a new one on it's way to you the next day. I have never dealt with better customer service anywhere! The actual device is lighter than the Nook and screen contrast is better. There are tons of free books on the Amazon site. When you finish with a book, you can delete it off your Kindle and Amazon will archive it for you forever. It only takes a few seconds to re-download it if you want to reread it. I have nothing but praise for my Kindle 3 and Amazon.

One last gripe. Turning off 3G/Wifi may be called "airplane mode," but airlines still won't freakin' let you use the thing during takeoff or landing. "Sir, you have to turn off your computer." "It's not a computer, and it's in 'airplane mode'." "It doesn't matter what it is sir, all electronic devices must be stowed."

Although I was already reading ebooks on my Palm Pilot (remember those? ... it was great having my medical library in my palm, literally), this new generation of eBook readers is all new to me. I don't really have many "favorite books".

I'm overtired and being a tad overdramatic. I'm just trying to make a calm, informed decision and then Woot shoves this Nook right in my face and tries to get me to impulse buy.

I can't recommend this deal. I bought this exact same item directly from B&N, at a discounted price because it was refurbished, but it was NOT fixed. The WiFi was still broke and even the employees at my local B&N told me it was a bad idea to buy refurbished NOOKS and recommended I return it. When I tried to return it, B&N was really petty about the S&H on a DEFECTIVE product. I'm sure Woot would be better about it, but from someone who knows how tempormental NOOKS are (I later bought a brand-new NOOK COLOR that I love), save yourself the headache and pass this "deal" up.

Edit: However, if you're insistant on it, NOOKS are better I think than Kindles due to Kindles not supporting Epub... which means no borrowing books from your library or getting free ones off other sites. Also, in bright sunlight they are just fine, both the NOOK and NOOK Color. On the Color, you just have to get the anti-glare screen and turn the brightness all the way up and it's pretty good.

My concern is that there are SO many of these refurb Nooks around. B&N sold 5,000 of the WiFi version last week on the big auction site for $79.99. Is there something fundamentally unsound about this device that require them to be refurbed?

You are not locked into only using bn it can read ebook and epup format as well as pdf so you have Lots of options We compared them all and the nook is by far the best one. Between the free books and the free crap you get when you walk in the store with it it pays for itself. My daughter was delighted when we went there and she got a mango smoothie for free just because she had her nook color with her.
