Some things I *don't* like and clarifications:
- I wish I could subscribe to RSS feeds other than having the option to pay for a very limited selection of them through BN. Rooting the device offers this option; I haven't done it.
- The instructions say the screen can't tolerate temperatures below freezing or above 120 degrees, and not to leave it in the car. I've had it in my bag in NYC in late December and in my trunk in Louisiana in late July; but, y'know, stress.
- It does run android, but the e-paper screen's refresh rate is far too low for any kind of animation other than, say, blink. My understanding is most of the apps available add functionality supporting the product as an e-reader.
- The audio player is extremely simplistic, and lacks certain functionality that would make it better suited to audio books.
- Categorizing books could be more elegant. You can sort books into "shelves," but they still appear on the main screen. You also can't do this sorting on the computer or Web, which would be far easier. I don't know if Kindle does this better.
- I have a close friend with a Kindle. We tried each others' devices. They're both great. He likes the Kindle better. I prefer the Nook.
- Expect to find as an ebook anything you can find in, say, your local book store. Now really think about that. That's a very different selection from what you'd find on, say, Amazon. Missing is pretty much anything published between 1923 and 2006 or so that isn't either a) still in print or b) was a huge blockbuster. This seems to be the same for Amazon & Kobo, suspect it has to do with licensing restrictions, because with overhead so low, you'd think publishers would be racing to release their enormous back catalogs of remaindered works.
- My buddy eventually went from a Kindle to an iPad in order to read comic books. He likes it, but says it's a very different experience.
- To reiterate, if you think (as many online reviewers seem to), that this is a clunky tablet, you will be disappointed. It's a single purpose device, and it performs that purpose beautifully.
- BN makes a featured book available for download every Friday, but they're usually terrible. Occasionally they'll do other promotions for free classics (like good, relatively recent stuff, not just recycling pre-1923 Google Books/archive.org junk).
