Sorry for the long post/rant, which ended up more than 2 cents worth - more like a $1.50 :-)

Just wanted to follow-up on this....
I did get my replacement clear-case for my NOOK and I LOVE IT!

It's basically a thick plastic like case (it's not a hard plastic) that will protect the back and edges of your nook - this is great for those folks (such as myself) who don't want to put their NOOK in a case but want some additional protection for it. It won't provide any protection for the front but it will prevent nicks and scratches in the back and edges.

No apologies of any kind are coming our way. This is the new form of "customer service": commiserating with you on how awful things are for you, but doing nothing.

I just sent back my Nook yesterday after ordering a Kindle on Friday. And guess what? The Kindle is "out for delivery" as I type. I even chose the free Super Saver shipping method. I guess they just want us to start buying books as early as possible.

I wrote to Woot asking if there was a way I could find out when they get my returned package. The answer was basically "nope." But I guess I'll get the refund when I get it?

i will probably order from Woot again .... but not "high-dollar" electronics.

I ordered something last Wednesday from another online vendor.

Here is the tracking info for that item (I had no idea when I ordered that they were sending it 'SmartPost').

May 3, 2011 12:00 AMShipment information sent to U.S. Postal Service
May 3, 2011 12:04 AMDeparted FedEx locationFEDEX SMARTPOST ATLANTA, GA
May 1, 2011 10:13 PMArrived at FedEx locationFEDEX SMARTPOST ATLANTA, GA
Apr 29, 2011 9:26 PMDeparted FedEx locationFEDEX SMARTPOST GROVE CITY, OH
Apr 28, 2011 9:46 PMArrived at FedEx locationFEDEX SMARTPOST GROVE CITY, OH
Apr 27, 2011 12:14 PMShipment information sent to FedEx

So, with any luck I'll have that item a mere seven days after it was ordered. Which isnt too bad.

With all that said .... so far I have had no issues with my Nook. I have not tried to sideload any books/files. I have simply downloaded a few free books from B&N and enjoyed reading them (which of course was my reason for ordering the Nook).

The only thing I will mention is the battery life (not a complaint, just a mention for comparison). I fully charge it about every three days. I know the 'specs' say it will hold for ten days, but I dont know if they mean 'idle' time or 'reading' time. I am however reading my Nook several (about 5 or 6) hours a day. So I'm ok with that battery life as long as it stays that way and doesnt suddenly start draining faster.

My original tracking number still does not register in FedEx's system. Still waiting for my replacement to ship, all customer service will tell me is that they will send a tracking number when it does. Really worried that I'll get a defective Nook and have to deal with B&N for getting another replacement. Wish I hadn't been looking into ereader's on April 13, found this place, and made a snap decision to order the Nook - what a nightmare!

I am getting a bit nervous, I ordered mine from the 'moofi' sale that recently ended, but it has never progressed passed the first 'arrived at Fedex location Irving/tx' location status on the Fedex site. That was the 29th, nothing since. What's the point of package tracking if it never updates?

Well, after the long wait for its arrival, it's here & it works. Too bad I really kind of hate it. I honestly prefer my old Sony PRS-300 & its stripped down interface. The Nook is fiddly, and that touch screen at the bottom is a PITA to use.

That will teach me to impulse buy. If I'd just waited, I could have purchased the same refurbed 3G + Wifi Nook Classic from Barnes & Noble via their Ebay store for $15 less (thanks to free shipping & no tax), and been able to return the damn thing.

To get more battey life make sure to set the following option (found under WI-FI): AIRPLAINE MODE=ON

Setting AIRPLAINE MODE=ON will turn-off WIFI so the nook is not constantly looking for it, which drains the battery.

quality posts: 0 Private Messages PWheel

Yep. I have it set that way. But like I said, I am using it a lot. When I finish my current (1100 pages) book, I have a library book (the paper kind, LOL) that I have to read and return, so we'll see how the battery does when it's not being used so much.

My Nook arrived Friday after being alternately "due" the 28th, then 29th, then 30th.

So far, all is well and I am enjoying it. It IS heavier than my wife's Kindle, but it is not that heavy. I bough one of the "Crazy on Digital" kits with the vinyl cover, chargers and screen protector for a total of about $15 off eBay. Fits fine, seems like decent quality and the price was sure right.

Happy with Nook. Not happy with shipping screw up. Would like a shipping refund, but I doubt we are going to get one.

UPS almost delivered it to the wrong place, even after I called them to correct the apartment number last night. So much for UPS being better than FedEx. Anyway its at home waiting for me, hoping this one will work, please let it work . ..

A few other tips to help conserve the battery:

Under Settings, Display
Turn the "auto adjust brightness" to OFF
Touchscreen brightness to 10% or less, and
Reduce Touchscreen timer to 10 seconds.

Just an FYI.
If you have your Nook PW protected to purchase books and you decide to change your PW on Barnes & Noble Website, it doesn't automatically change the Nook's PW. You can't change the Nook's PW just by entering the new PW on the Nook either.

According to the Tech I spoke to, the ONLY way to change the Nook PW is to Unregister the Nook and then re-register it. Then enter the new PW.

Rather than go through all that, I asked...can't I just change my PW on the website back to what it originally was..they said yah you could TRY that.

I chose to change my website PW back to the original rather than unregister and reregister the Nook! It worked. Don't know why the Tech people didn't suggest that as an option.

Oh well..

As an update, Fedex finally updated to show the Nook is in TX...theoretically could still get it here for Thursday but not honestly holding my breath.

Yikes. Mine shipped the 29th too (I ordered it on the 21st) and it just arrived at the FedEx hub in Salt Lake. The one I ordered on the 13th also took about 4 days to get to Salt Lake (when it finally shipped). I can't imagine why it took 4 days to get somewhere in Texas...

I really wonder if all of these problems are normal with an order of this size. I'd guess they probably are, especially since the people who didn't have a problem to begin with never posted here. But this has been the most frustrating purchasing experience I have ever had, by a LOT.

NO!!!!!!! Tell me it ain't so!!

But I know it is because I just checked myself. I am pretty pissed. I ordered a refurb Nook WiFi from eBay about a month ago and got it in TWO DAYS, with FREE SHIPPING. I'm pretty sure if I ordered the 3G+WiFi from eBay tonight I'd have it before I get the one that I ordered on April 21st from Woot. Yeah, I think I'm done with Woot. So not worth the aggravation.

If I thought I'd get shipping costs back from Woot, I'd order the one on eBay right now and return the other one when it arrives. They said they'd refund shipping costs for the orders from the 13th, but I already have that one. They aren't likely to refund shipping costs for the one I ordered on the 21st, even though it took them more than 5 business days to ship it. AAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH. And Woot's customer service absolutely SUCKS.

Rant over.

Have had my NOOK for a few days and have been using it several hours a day. Overall I really prefer my Kindle. I'm thinking I'll be re-selling the NOOK once the Kindle is compatible with my library's ebook program.

It is great being able to get books from my local library online lending site. It's pretty simple to download books to the NOOK.

The touchscreen is just annoying compared to the Kindle's regular mini keyboard. I find the notation and look up word feature to be super clunky on the NOOK.

Other major downside for the NOOK is the limited font size options and no ability to change the screen rotation.

Customer service said on 4/29 they would send a replacement. It left Woot on the evening of 5/3 and I got an email with the tracking number at midnight. Shipping method says "RP-Fedex Ground" instead of "SMARTPOST" like the tracking number email from the lost shipment.

I changed the last screensaver a bit. Same download link:

Again, unzip and copy the folder to your nook's "my screensavers" folder.

Disable / turn off the wi-fi and the 3G should kick in IF you are in a 3G coverage area. I fretted over it at first b/c there was no setting to 'turn on' the 3G, but I followed a helpful hint on here a few pages back, and when I turned off wi-fi a moment or so later the 3G kicked in.

Right. "Airplane mode" is the only way to turn 3G off/on. Aiplane on = 3G off.

By 'Off' you mean 'Disconnected' right? I don't really have an 'Off' option. If my phone is any indication of the 3G nature of the area, I should be swimming in data. Is there any indication on the 'Device' page that displays information about 3g?

There really isn't anything about 3G that I've been able to find.

Go to the 'settings' box. The first line should say 'Airplane mode.' In order to access 3G this should be off. The next line should say 'Wi-Fi.' If you touch that line, the next screen should say it's off. After that, if you're in an AT&T area, on the very top line of the reading area of your Nook there should be the normal cell phone bars. That indicates that you're using 3G. For me it took about 30 seconds for my Nook to connect to the 3G.

If the bars go up in a pie shape instead of side to side, you're using Wi-Fi.

Hope that helps...

Another way to verify 3G is you can see the AT&T SIM card when you pop off the back cover. The SIM card is located UNDER the battery on the top left side. Only a small portion of the card sticks out.

I found a very useful book at my local B&N store last weekend. It's called, "The Nook Book" or something like that. The first half is devoted to the Nook Color, and second half is devoted to our uber-slow-to-arrive friend.

Anyway, the author gives good tips on all sorts of things like how to get the longest life from the battery (seems that the battery might last longer if new units are allowed to drop to below 20% power before the unti is fully recharged) to tips on rooting (he gives a serial number range that is the dividing line between Nooks that can be rooted easily and those that require more care to avoid turning them into a brick). Book also mentions Calibre and other helpful tips.

I just couldn't make myself buy it for $15 plus tax when I knew that I could get my local library to buy it, but you might want to peruse the book while lingering around your local B&N downloading the B&N bonus material and see what you think.

Best of luck to those still waiting.
