Kindles allow you to make notes while reading a book, albeit in a clanky fashion. Does the Nook allow this?

Can you load books to it using Excalibre as you do with the SonyReader?

Yes, by using the touch screen at the bottom. It converts to a touch keyboard for this function.

That's referencing the screen size of the navigation touch screen, the nook's screen is the same as the kindle or slightly bigger.

True, but for reading an eink screen will always be superior to an LCD. That's why you have a tablet and an ereader.

Bought 2 when they were $69.99 on Woot Sell-Out. Great deal! We love them. Read .pdfs and regular books on it all the time. Don't need color since books are not in color.

I have had one since July, and my husband has recently gotten the Nookcolor. I prefer the Nookcolor for pdfs (husband uses this for work, where he needs to read pdfs with graphs and stuff), but the Nook is the BEST for ereading. You can buy ebooks from anywhere, unlike with the Kindle, and you can check out library books, unlike with the Kindle. This one has everything! I haven't tried listening to audiobooks on this, but I do not believe you can check out audiobooks digitally with this, because you need the Overdrive media thingy for that. I use my iPod Touch for listening to library audiobooks.

I own the Sony 650, the Kindle and had the opportunity to to test out the Nook for a few days recently. I suppose each have advantages and disadvantages and some functions I found I liked better than others.
I thought the user interface for the Nook to be the most cumbersome of the 3. I found that the color strip of the Nook only shows jacket covers of the books/material purchased from B&N, books you add from your own library will not scroll the jackets in color ...that was a disappointment to me and I felt a little deceived about that advertised cool feature.
I used Calibre to install 300 books into all 3 devices. The Kindle had to be manually sorted and placed into folders of my creation (keyboard easy to use & worked fine), it took time but it was fairly simple and straight forward. The Nook was the worse to set up for managing the files into the selective bookselves! I finally gave up on that as it was just way too time consuming and irritating to maneuver around in that interface.
I feel the Sony out classes both of these hands down. Granted, the Sony 650 is super hard to find and still the highest priced but, to me, is well worth it. When I installed the books into the Sony, they went straight into the folder I wanted the books to be set up in and within minutes the Sony was all set and ready to go. Not so much with the Nook or Kindle.
Readability, basically the same on all 3, the touch screen on the Sony 650 super sensitive and the Nook and Kindle has the page turn buttons placed ergonomically.
The battery life of the Kindle is amazing, the Sony second and the Nook the worse. And as mentioned, the Sony and Nook has the epub format, the Kindle does not. I get more epub format books so they always have to be converted for the Kindle...some conversions do not always come out correctly when using Calibre.
This is a great buy for people who will strictly buy books, get library loans, but if you have an existing library, be prepared to spend extra time setting it up.

Referbs tend to outlast new. These were new products that were defective, returned, then fixed. Usually refurbs are fixed by hand as opposed to being stamped out en masse as new products are.

So Woot is now owned by Amazon, and is offering the Nook for sale?

I can't tell if this is genius, ballsy, or just Jatravartid.

Best purchase have made in years. Bought one for the wife too. First off e-ink is SO GOOD to read versus a backlit screen. I can not read on a backlit screen for long periods without eye strain. Another thing that is great about this is when I buy a book (or DL one of the free ones B&N offers) my wife can see it in her Nook library. So you can easily share books among multiple people...even read them at the same time. The search is fast and simple and I like that I can see a color version of the cover art. If you are lookign for a device primarily for READING (not web surfing, gaming etc) then this is what you want.

Refurb Nooks come with the exact same warranty as the new ones. One year! You can't go wrong with that. I have had one for almost a year and use it daily. You can't tell the difference. On a side note, I LOVE my Nook. It has a removable battery, place for expansion memory, and I can check out books from my local library - things Kindle doesn't offer.

This is a 1000% NO go.

The Amazon Kindle is hands down the better reader. Lets not even talk about the obvious i want to mention something about amazon service that the B&N item can not compete with.

IF/When you break your kindle(the e-ink screen is very pressure sensitive) they ship you a new one in less then 24 hours. Let me repeat that, they ship it out and it arrives in your hands in less then 24 hours. Not only does the replacement look new but it comes preloaded and synced with all of your books.(only books bought not the once loaded using calibre "The one stop solution for all your e-book needs")

And how many slumdog chai wallahs do you have to talk to too get this magical turn around. ZERO!!! you put your phone number in to a form hit submit and in a matter of seconds a american person calls YOU!!! then busts your balls, jokingly asking if you dropped your kindle when you were drunk at happy hour...

SO what you say, did i mention that is was all done FREE of charge(pending you return the kindle w/ prepaid label within 30days)!

how do i know so much you wonder... I've done this... Twice :D

so in closing go buy the kindle with lifetime free wireless internet(the browser is good for wiki and Google maps. and no you cant upgrade the video card and power supply so you can play a FPS's at max resolution while translating the bible into Gaelic and seeding the 67gb, seven season, 178 episode TNG .rar on UTorrent) and dont forget to get a cover...

peachegg wrote:I bought a Nook and regret it. The B&N website has the worst search function I've seen on such a site. I've had nothing but issues with simply downloading books I've purchased to the extent I've had to wait upwards of two weeks to download a book I paid for. Almost reversed the charge with my CC company that time and since then have not purchased another title for the thing.

The device itself is nice and comfortable to hold with no physical keyboard to accidentally hit which is the reason I chose it over the Kindle. The e-ink display is far superior for reading than the new Nook's backlit display. However, knowing what I know now about both devices I would definitely choose the Kindle over the Nook. I'll probably be eventually selling my Nook on Craigslist for less than what even Woot is offering. :P

I have NEVER had an issue with B&N's website. Books download within 90 seconds (and I live out in the sticks). I also use other ebook sites to download epub books. Just a press of the button. Nook is hands down the best ereader on the market at this time.

All I can say is, Woot, that write up hit so close to home I sat, gaping, reading it from start to finish. I could almost cry.

Unfortunately I bought another large-chain-store's e-reader as they were going out of business and selling everything on clearance, and it works well enough for what I want it for.

If you want weird and free books to fill yours up (which is what I got mine for), just visit http://www.gutenberg.org

And if you still want some paper and glue things that help out mom-and-pop shops you should probably check out http://www.abebooks.com

Great thing about the nook is you can use Google's book store as well, the kindle cant at this time. I find the google book store easier to use especially free books.

There are still TONS of places to download epub books. No worries here. Plus, I can download from the local library, unlike the Kindle...not to mention no file formatting so I can read. Just download and go. Kindle is not all that and a bag of chips..had one and returned it for a Nook.

I love the idea of an e-book reader, BUT the current state of DRM protection is too much of a turn off for me. I think there is an e-book reader out there that doesn't have DRM built-in, but I can't think of the model right now.

We need more piracy in e-books. THEN the market for readers will really take off.

I have the WiFi only version and like it. The new Kindle is a lot zippier and a little lighter, but Kindle is not compatible with the epub format, which is the standard format for millions of free books. The Nook is compatible with the epub format.

had the Sony eReader 500 for 3 years - when time to replace last year, bought Kindle first. Just couldn't get comfortable with the Kindle interface, the keyboard, and proprietary material. Bought the Nook and dumped the Kindle immediately. Would recommend the Nook to anyone over Kindle EXCEPT students who might need to notate study materials.

It is better than the kindle because it natively reads epubs. This is a huge advantage that too many people overlook.

This is the only ereader people should consider, imo.

you can download for free the program calibre from the internet that will convert any epub file to a mobi file which is readable on the kindle. I have several epub books on my kindle. fyi.

I borrowed a nook from my public library, and it turned me into a Kindle fanatic. Free 3G internet browsing, much better navigation, and better page turn buttons make a kindle the clear winner for me. Any for only $90 more compared to this, the choice is clear.

No doubt my reply will get lost in the cacophony, but here's the deal: if you need to read a lot or are moderately serious about the reading you do, get an e-reader.

As far as which e-reader, my wife has a Kindle and I have a Nook. I'm selling my Nook for the latest gen Kindle.

The Nook is noticeably bigger, heavier, and slower to react than the Kindle.
The Nook supports e-pub and other formats natively where the Kindle supports Amazon and PDF. This has become mostly a non-issue as book sites like Project Gutenberg offer Kindle versions of their books.
The Nook lets you expand your storage with Micro-SD cards, the Kindle does not (2GB internal).
Both Amazon and B&N offer free books all the time (not including the usual suspects like libraries, P.G., Internet Archive, etc).

I would pick a new-gen Kindle over the Nook every single day, even at a price premium. Either way, though, you win over these Jatravartid tablets-with-reader-apps.

I have one of these (bought during the first eBook war of 2008). I've loved it. No problems whatsoever. Easily reads a lot of ebook formats and also PDFs without conversions. Sometimes PDF images come out wonky, but a great reader. Wish I could have gotten mine for $99
