just bought this on moofi.woot.com last week... still have not received it yet. hopefully it will arrive soon.

My friend got one on woot the last time it was on... said its the best vaccum he's ever had. He went over a clean rug and couldnt believe how much dirt it picked up!

For what it's worth, Consumer Reports said that the Ball mechanism is just a gimmick. Apparently, it's no more maneuverable than a well-designed vacuum based on wheels.

Been waiting for a good Dyson deal for a while...

Ended up buying an LG LUV200R for less money and it's brand new, has a 5-year warranty like a new Dyson.

I'm impressed so far. It cost me $50 less than this refurb Dyson.

Then it wasn't a clean rug, right?

New Dyson vacuums have a 5-year warranty, where this has a 6 month warranty.

I got a new one of these last summer for cheaper than this after a price match.

I am going to have to disagree. This quick article gives some advantages to the ball.

While a very well-designed vacuum based on wheels may be similar, you can't beat this price.

(Also note: there are very mixed reviews at the bottom of the above article)

If by "gimmick" they mean "feature that makes it easier to maneuver than any other vacuum I've ever owned", then they're dead on.

Someone here put me onto a better deal some time ago when a Dyson was up for grabs on Woot. He/she said that the Eureka AS1000a, only available at Walmart (don't ask me why), runs circles around a Dyson and only costs about $100. Well, I got one and its unbelievably good. Claims to be more powerful than a Dyson at 1/3 the cost. I was ashamed at what the Eureka (Airstream) got out of my rugs. Go to Walmart.com and check out the reviews - you won't be sorry. Some Walmart stores have it in stock but you can also order it online to be delivered to your store to be picked up. Oh, and thanks to the person who gave me the tip!

Hey, look! It's a rainbow of Dysons! All three combined don't compare to a real Rainbow. The best vacuum is a whole house system that vents outside. The next best is a water tank Rainbow. True, they are a PITA to take apart to clean, but I like CLEAN and cannot afford a whole house system. I'm amazed at the marketing department at Dysons though. They sure do live up to the old adage: lies, damn lies, and Dyson... I mean, Advertising! ;-P

Please do not increment my Quality Posts count. 69 is a good place to be. ;-)

They have this at Frys electronics this week for $219. I have a DC14 and its awesome. I only wish the canister on this one was as big..There is no vacuum like a Dyson

I bought one for my mom because they are lighter and more maneuverable than any other vacuum around.

Okay, I just scanned the link you gave and I did not see anything explaining why it's not a mere gimmick. One reviewer simply said that it's no gimmick without explaining why, and whether it's better than some well-designed ordinary vacuum. No one is denying that the ball is maneuverable. The issue is whether it's more maneuverable than a wheel-based vacuum. Furthermore, there are other technologies too, i.e. pivoting wheels, ball-bearings, etc.

The main review also says nothing about the advantages of a ball over wheels. It merely states that the new ball offers a lower center of gravity -- but the stated improvement was over the PREVIOUS Dyson ball model, which used a bigger ball. Nowhere does it say how it's more maneuverable than a well-built regular vacuum. If center of gravity is the issue, many regular uprights mount their motors low.

So no, the link you gave does not disprove Consumer Report's claim that the ball is a gimmick that offers no meuverability improvement over a well-designed wheel vacuum.ma

Where did you see this price at Fry's I just checked their website and they have the dc24 refurb for 299. I am very tempted to get this. The only thing that worries me is thew 6mo warranty. On the other hand the DC07 Full Gear I bought in 2003 has not given me any problems. It still runs great, but I have wanted the ball for a while. I will probably end up ordering one.

I can't find a DC25 anywhere near this price, so yeah more power to you. For the people worried about refurbs, I got a DC14 refurbished over 4 years ago, probably six, can't remember.. That vacum is still running strong and is by far the best I've used. It's also been used in a restaurant whenever the commercial vacuum at my dad's place broke he borrowed it. Only thing that's ever been replaced on it was a hose on the bottom that got tear in it. Cost me $10 on Amazon to get a replacement and 10 minutes to change it.

The design on their vacuums are very ingenious as well. You can access every tube that could have a clog with just a push button release, the filters are washable.

Let's face it, vacuuming is boring and a chore. That's why I bought a really expensive and awesome vacuum, like this one. My Dyson is the epitome of luxury vacuuming. If you think vacuuming really sucks, blow some cash and get this Dyson!

That statement is only a valid retort to Consumer Reports if "any other vacuum [you've] ever owned" includes the models they tested. Since I doubt that you've tested that many vacuums, especially in a controlled way like they do, I'll stick with them.

Here's an excerpt from another article:
"The ball was a genius innovation makes cornering work a breeze; it makes Dyson ball able to vacuum everywhere in the apartment without having to move lots of things around. This vacuum also equipped with low-reach floor tool that attaches to the wand to clean hard to reach places such as under beds and sofas."

Here is a website with a lot of reviews praising the ball's maneuverability.

There is plenty of information out there that, to me, shows that the ball is not just purely a gimmick (Although, it certainly adds something unique to Dyson).

Edit: Fixed the first link

Because the motor sits in the ball, it has a tendency to blow dust, lint and pet hair away from the head.
