Is the built-in covert tracking by Apple with IOS 4.0 an optional feature? ;)

Epic writeup. Highlight the negatives BEFORE the perks. Kudos, Woot!

Looks to be a pretty good deal. It's $30 less than the refurb from Apple. http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC540LL/A?mco=MjEzOTMxODM

Amazon has a 32GB 4th ed. for $279, and it isn't refurbished. I think the extra $110 (more than Woot's price for the 8GB) is worth paying to get more storage space and all.

It is one of the most gorgeous-looking mobile displays you can get, but it isn't that awesome. Colors really pop and text looks great but most people wouldn't notice unless you pointed it out.

I believe it is only the phone versions not the pod versions that get the tracking "feature".

hey sorry I don't want to sound like an human here, but what exactly are you talking about?? I've never heard about this tracking issue???

Is it similar to google keeping records of all our web-searches or what?

Thanks in advance

From Wikipedia:

3rd Gen = 3.5 in (89 mm); 2:3 aspect ratio, 262,144-color,
glossy glass-covered LCD screen, 480×320 px (HVGA) at 163 ppi

4th Gen = 3.5 in (89 mm); 2:3 aspect ratio; 24-bit color, glossy glass-covered LED-backlit LCD, 960×640 px at 326 ppi

In a personal perspective, I compared my 4th gen. screen playing Angry Birds to my mom's 3rd. gen screen playing the same game and you could definitely tell the difference. The 960x640 resolution makes it really nice for gaming, web surfing, and everything else.

Check this link out to compare the screens side by side at Apple's website.

It's one of those things you won't miss unless you've been using it for a while. It is weird for me to look at other people's older gen ipones that clearly aren't as high-res. It isn't a huge deal, but there is a noticeable difference.

Yes it actually is. I wen't from using a 3rd gen iPod for about a year to the iPhone 4 recently and I'm still surprised at how crisp it is compared to the old screen.

Word to the wise: You do not EVER actually have to buy an app on the app store! I've got about 100 apps, all free. If you just check every week on the iTunes Top Free Apps page, you can get a crapload of free stuff that normally costs real money. I've probly got $50+ worth of stuff on mine right now, and I've spent nary a cent. It is no longer possible to be bored!

If I am not mistaken, Apple is given the right to track where your cell phone is whenever they desire. It is supposedly used to give you more geographically relevant information on apps and things, but some wonder if the reasons are more nefarious.

I think I'll pass. It only has a 90 day Woot warranty. For $30 bucks more, I can get a 1 year apple warranty and free shipping making the price difference $25. That's less than $3 a month for the extra warranty. No deal here.

Does this baby have an FM tuner built in?

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

Why would I even want to display my retinas? Sorry, Woot, my eye doctor gets to see them once a year... and that's it.

Going from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4, the retina display is *very* noticeable and makes a huge difference. I've got very good eyesight, and as long as I'm holding the display further than 12" from my face, I flat-out can't discern individual pixels at all.

ah gotcha. that seems to be a fairly prevalent issue in modern society though.... I mean as technology inevitably improves, how can we honestly expect to keep the same sort of privacy?

.... I feel as if ethics is not even a consideration in modern-sector production!

Although I don't own any iOS products, I've been emailing Apple my longitude and latitude a few times a day for years now and they don't seem to have abused the info yet.

The iPhones that have built-in GPS keep a time/location log on the phone that's also copied to your computer when you sync your phone. Supposedly, the information is only kept in those two places and isn't submitted to Apple, but I imagine we'll hear more on the subject in the next few weeks. You can search for "iPhone tracking" on the web and get lots of information if you're interested.

I'm an Android guy, and I say retina is a big deal. It's as beautiful a screen as you'll find.

Let me put it this way: were I to buy one for my mother, I'd be sure it had a retina display. Retina display is more important than capacity.
