I have not read all the pages. I found that my Sirius GPP Augen 97 that would not connect to the Android Market, did connect to the Amazon droid market and I could now have a good, not great market experience. I expect when I get this puppy I could do the same.

well, you are what the technology world calls Laggard in the adoption curve.
and as far as your needs, they all sound good actual needs, that even an early adopter would need. thing is that if that is really what you need than this isn't the product for you. an ipad does all that 100 times faster and better. even droid tablets (only $50 more), and for heaven sake sadly even microsoft tablet does it better than this.

I think you haven't done your research based on your needs, but based on a price. and with time you will not be happy with the product.

it's not that other companies don't care about the small group of people like yourself. it's the old metaphor of a glass half empty or half full. you are a small portion of the market, and companies choose to invest in where the majority brings greater revenue (from a
business rev perspective).
but from a what are the future needs of customers than you could see it as most companies care to give you better products in which you can grow in, instead of offering you a product that does now all you need, but as you continue to demand more the product will hold you back instead of letting you improve and grow.

anyway, enjoy your tech toy.

I take notes in meetings, use it as an ebook readers (single function ebook readers don't seem worth it to me), read and annotate pdfs, check news and email. This is a combination of functions that's important to me and a number of other people in education. And all of my doctors are very interested.

Since you can rotate the displays, I think you can flip the device 180 degrees so the e-reader is on the right and the Android screen is on the left. That's how the device is shown a couple of times in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28vvRbhOdg8&feature=related

(Technically that's the big eDGe, rather than the Pocket eDGe, but I think they share this functionality.)

In for 1. I've been drooling over this device for awhile, but the former $399 price for something running Android 1.6 was what kept me from buying. I travel and wanted a single device to bring with, instead of hauling an eReader + laptop. I like that I can close this device to give added protection to the screens, and I like that it's small enough to fit in my purse instead of a large, bulky laptop bag. I love that it has a USB port so I can tether it to my phone if there's no wifi. Very excited for it to arrive!

Well, you're not the target market for this deal, obviously. It's not the latest & greatest, not at this price.

Your best bet for those specs is probably something like the Viewsonic G Tablet. Or just go for the iPad or Galaxy Tab, if you're willing to pay premium prices for what you want.

Now that I've been looking at this all day, and reading comments, and watching/reading reviews on the webs, I've come to the conclusion that since I've long wanted both an eReader and a tablet, this is an okay price point to try out both. This may be far from top of the line for either, but I can use this to find out what I really want and not feel like I've wasted a lot of money.

I have gone through the whole thread and also read the cnet review saying that the PDF display wasn't as good as the full size edge. My question is this - in landscape (I know this requires 2.2) can you decently read a PDF that spans the whole screen, or zoomed up (cropping margins) so you can read a single line in its entirety from left to right? I am a grad student and typically go through 200 pages of paper a week (not to mention toner), this sounds like an affordable and less wasteful alternative along with the tablet side, but need to be able to read PDFs without having to constantly zoom and scroll side to side (up/down is fine...)

Can anyone answer my question?

The use that occurs to me is for watching webinars or web-based lectures on the tablet side, and taking notes on the supplied .pdf files on the e-ink side. With the Android 2.2 beta upgrade, both could be in landscape mode, so you could turn it so that the video is playing on the top screen and you're writing on the bottom screen.

It might be easier to do this with the full-sized eDGe, but this one might be adequate to the task. There's certainly a wealth of online courses to choose from, finding content from top-flight universities would not be a problem.

Well, apparently it installs fine under the 2.2 beta, but never connects.

So intrigued by this, but just too many negatives to shell out $155. Besides, that's $155 that I can put toward the HP TouchPad that's due out this summer...probably August. :|

If the version of Android on the eDGe can run apps like ThinkFree Office or Adobe Acrobat reader for Android, you will be able to read native .pdf documents. I use ThinkFree on my LG Ally, and can zoom textbook pages to a fairly readable size.

I don't know if this will be helpful to you or not, but, I convert my PDFs to epub via Calibre. I don't use landscape tho since I haven't upgraded to the new OS.

Thank you but that doesn't really answer my question. It states it can read PDFs. I am wondering if the screen is large enough and resolution good enough to read a standard academic PDF (generally times new roman 12) without having to scroll side to side.

I was prepared to say no to this question, despite not owning one of these and knowing little about them, but after looking through the user guide apparently you CAN!!! Out of the box if I understand correctly, all you need is a powered USB to VGA connector, which shouldn't be hard to find or that expensive .

Also, I just bought one of these amazing devices, I'm going into college and have been thinking about buying a netbook to go along with my massive laptop so I don't have to carry it to every class, and this + a small USB keyboard fits the bill PERFECTLY, not to mention the e-reader functionality, this is quite possibly my dream device.

I wish it were that easy but unfortunately a lot of my PDFs are scanned from books and a lot of conversions can be pretty ugly. The newer journals go in really nice though...still on the fence, its a lot of money for a mixed-review item

I want to plug in a keyboard and edit text on the eInk side (outside in the sun). If I could do that I'd be sold.

Or if the Kindle app would use the eInk side, it'd be a no-brainer to buy anyways...

I just measured my academic papers with a ruler and it appears the standard is 1.5" margins, so that leaves 5.5" that will be displayed on the 6" e-ink screen with the 2.2 upgrade. In the very least it will save me from buying 1500 sheets of paper and a toner cartridge every semester, I hope. I suckered in and bought one, it should keep all my articles in one place.

I am fairly certain you can upgrade it to Android 2.2, but from what I read it's considered entourage's beta version. I also think you have to seek out how to do this through the entourage website since it is a beta version. I have heard nothing but good things though

Best wishes, and my fingers are crossed that we all like this product!

Hey- check out Amazon.com. They have a review of this product with someone's explanation of how to run the Kindle app on the reader side. I'm not super certain how to explain it since I don't yet have this, but thought I'd pass along that I read a review from someone with a similar concern.

Hope this helps

My wife and I are highly pleased with the pocket edge dualbook we recived today but not happy that we paid 199.99 at a different web site. We liked it so much that we went ahead and ordered another 2 more from WOOT. Man what a buy. Just hope I don't see somewhere else next week for Seventy Five Dollars. It is worth every cent as far as we are concerned. Got one for myself and one for our daughter for upcomming birthday present. You would pay as much for a protable DVD player, and this dose so much more. When these arive and they are up and running I am thinking about getting rid of my NV52 Gateway laptop that I got just a year ago. With this, who needs the laptop?

Yes, according to a fairly recent post on the entourageedge.com forum, there is a fairly large selection of USB-video/VGA/DVI adapters supported by "dingo" -- the screen integrating bridge.

I think it would be outstanding, because she could surf for recipes across your home WiFi and store them on the unit, take it to the market to do the shopping, etc.
