How could they possibly have any of these to sell? I thought they sold em all out during the woot off?

I have a pair. They are actually pretty fantastic speakers.

Also, No monkeys?

Pretty high frequency response at 85Hz, I'd hope for something under 50, even at this size!

Still they're a good quality brand.

I've got these sitting on my desk right now. Have used them daily for about a 1 1/2 years and they sound great.

Don't expect a lot of low end bass, but music and games sound very good to my ears.

What is the difference between the M-Audio professional speakers and these professional REFERENCE speakers? What makes it a reference model?

I've got some of these. They're pretty good, but they take up a bit of desktop real estate.

I was able to get a pair of these in previous woot off and they sound absolutely amazing. When they arrived, I couldn't even tell they were refurbished, they looked brand new?

Interesting, normally they sell the plain jane studiophile version of these speakers, and even more often the AV-30 model. Still, most of the comments are nothing but great things about the sound quality.

These are a bit bigger than your average computer speakers. Check around YouTube to get a good idea on how big they are.

I have AV30's and LOVE them, got them late '09. Would these be worth upgrading, or should I jump to BX5a's/KRK5's?

What the hell are you talking about? For speakers this size to go below 100Hz is remarkable.

I've heard these are pretty decent speakers. A lot better than your built-in laptop ones for sure.

During the woot-off they were selling the AV-30s, these are one level up, AV-40. I have the AV-30s which are pretty good, supposedly the 40s are even better. I paid $99 on Amazon for the AV-30s and wish I had waited. This is a great price for what most say are incredible speakers.

Its probably the manufacturer actually being honest. I'm sure they can produce sounds below 85Hz, but I bet the sensitivity drops off. This honesty is in contrast to the manufacturers who quote a bottom end as the lowest sound the speakers can make, even if it sounds terrible.

The TRS inputs are 1/4" connections. They're pretty much for pro use. I mean, you could use them, but these come with a 1/8" connector that plugs into your computer/iPod/whatever.

Regarding "reference"

I think as a broad explanation, a Sony speaker has a Sony sound, Bose has a Bose sound, and a reference speaker removes all the small differences to give you a "reference" sound that sounds like the recording straight from the studio.

(ex. maybe Sony tweaks their speakers to put out more bass, or all those options on your ipod to simulate symphony, or vocal, orchestra, etc. distort the original sound the artists created in the studio)

An article with a different interpretation but still same basic idea:

The bass response is pretty freaking sweet for a pair of monitors without a sub.

gah! How does woot know exactly when I'm waiting for my new card to put these up? Now I have to most certainly wait until my card comes in the mail later today right when they are sold out.

Harumph.

These are not regular desktop speakers (Dell, Logitech), but can be used as such. Search "Home Recording Studio" and you'll see speakers like these behind a mixing board. They should call them monitors, not speakers.

Actually, "Reference Speakers" are used so a producer can find out how good his music will sound on different systems. This set of speakers will be a good "reference" for how his music will sound on decent desktop speakers.

The difference between these speakers and the cheap desktop speakers you can get at the corner grocery store is that these will provide a consistent frequency response from speaker to speaker to speaker to speaker...

List price is $229, available for a paltry $179 from Sweetwater in a catalog I got in March. And, they come with a warranty that is worth more than the paper it's printed on. M Audio recently was purchased by AVID, a big name in the professional audio arena. You won't be disappointed.

Using the word "reference" is marketing BS to make you think the object in question is better than others that aren't "reference quality" so that you will pay more money or at least buy the "reference" product instead of some one else's.

It's like using the word "fine" before wine. Have you ever heard of a wine that wasn't "fine"? Of course not. It's all BS.
