I got mine, and they sound excellent! They look brand new, too.

I second that notion. Mine appeared to come in a brand new box as opposed to a "refurb" box. So far very happy and they sound pretty good so far. I think someone suggested using a dedicated soundcard as opposed to motherboard sound card so I may have to see if I can locate one out of one of my older computers.

Right speaker (the one which does not have the amplifier) does not work at all - not connected to the left speaker, not connected to another amplifier. Nada. Crap. Wonder how much return shipping to M-audio is going to set me back

I was in the same boat... Unboxed, plugged them in, and halfway into my the first song, one of the speakers died. Tried power-cycling, tried swapping around the RCA plugs, could not get it to run right for more than 5 minutes at a time. Then I tried ditching the included connectors and used a 5-year old set that I got for $5 from Radio Shack. That was 3 hours ago, and it's so far so good. Suffice it to say that I'm not throwing away the packaging yet, but you might want to try this before sending yours back.

BTW, the back panel does get REALLY hot, and I'm only at about 25% volume. Based on the link below, I might try the TRS connection...

uuugh, my fedex tracking number says delivered, and the final update says left at front door...

However, I live in an apartment complex, and there was nothing at my door... Hoping it's just at the office....but there was no door tag like there normally would be...

Don't think I can even check tomorrow since my hours at work completely cover the hours my office is open... :\

If they're not at the office, what recourse would there be?

Oops. Got mine today. Does not work, right out of the box. Right (passive) speaker silent. Tried new input devices and input wires, RCA and eighth inch. Heaphones plugged into the heaphone jack only receive the left channel also. Seriously, did they just forget to refurbish it? DISAPPOINT

Just got mine. Same problem as some others, right speaker did not work right out of the box. Just to check I flipped the RCA cables and now the right speaker works but not the left - so its the cable that came with that's the problem...thankfully. Off to radio shack...

got mine, sound great after a few hours of break in, must have not been used before. the included cables are junk, try a new audio cable before you send them back!

from the reviews i read I did expect them to sound a bit.. warmer? I'm not an audiophile with perfect hearing, but I was hoping for a richer mid-range.

looks like i was also gifted with a set of new, not refurbished, speakers - hurrah!

i'm setting these up in my living room for use as entertainment speakers (music and movies), and so far am very, very impressed. i considered getting a refurbished pair of Audioengine A2s, but the AV40s are a much better value for the same price. the sound is very close to my beloved A5s and they fill out a somewhat generously-sized NYC apartment nicely.

and i'll agree with most people here - the included audio cables are of cheap quality. thankfully, i had replacement cables from monoprice ready

Got mine last week. If you read through the comments there was some hinting that none of the speakers were, in fact, reburbs... just overstock or something.

But yeah... they work great. My friend has the Bx8a deluxe's with the sub, so I know what their decent (cost over twice as much) monitors sound like, and I have to say these really aren't too shabby. I wouldn't have bought them at full probably (would rather have saved the extra for better) but at the price we paid I am quite happy. They sound a lot more crisp and clear than my klipsch speakers.

One other note, I did try the line input and the 1/4" TRS, and the back seems to get noticably less hot with the 1/4". My soundcard does have 1/4" outputs (maudio fast track ultra) so I dont know if that makes a difference.

Initial testing: Wow! Very transparent -- I'm listening to come fabulous guitar cuts from "Masters of Acoustic Guitar" album. I've got my speakers sitting on upended 35 pound castiron dumbbells as speaker stands. This brings them to the proper height per the manual. Placement does make a big difference with these babies. Can't wait to hear them after they "burn in" for a few hours... an audiophile concept which is likely a pure crock of sh** (and I don't buy it).

Glad Woot offered these wonderful speakers.

I also forgot to mention that through the line in my right speaker sounds ever so slightly more quiet (like 5%) maybe it's in my head even.

But I swear through the TRS it sounds normal.

Again it could be in my head, but I think the TRS inputs just work better

Mine did that too (dead right channel), but it was an iPod Touch issue... The supplied 1/8" plug doesn't seat all the way into the iPod because of the iPod's curved edge. Pushing it in REALLY FIRMLY fixed it for me. Great speakers!

Got mine last Friday – so stoked just as everyone else, looked to be new in box.

Also like everyone else, only one speaker would work [wait for punchline!] – tried switching wires, then the other speaker would work. After banging my head and cursing woot, I realized that the connection to the computer itself was only halfway in – pushed it all the way and had m-audio av40 goodness in all its glory.

Thanks woot!

Picked up an maudio sbx10 sub and it sounds pretty awesome paired with these. Obviously its made to go with the higher end monitors, but it still sounds pretty rad. A little bit much for my room (about 12' by 12') but still a great sound

Well I got mine and they sound great. But...(there's always a but..) I can't connect them to my home theater system. How do you connect these to a receiver (Onkyo brand ) ?? I have DIRECTV for satellite and there doesn't seem to be a way to get them hooked up. TV is a Samsung 46". I've had two friends try, one is an audio engineer, and he said the receiver didn't have a pre-amp out. Any help would be appreciated. If I can't get it done, I'll put them on craigslist. Oh well...better luck next time.

Even if your TV does not have any analog audio outputs, I would assume your Onkyo receiver has a headphone jack. You will likely need an adapter to connect the stereo headphone jack to the speakers. You will have to experiment with adjusting the volume levels of both the receiver and speakers. If the receiver volume is too high it will sound distorted. If it is too low you may hear hiss.

Thank you for the suggestion. I looked on the back of my TV (Samsung) and I don't see an audio out...only audio IN. There is indeed a headphone jack on the front of the Onkyo receiver. I'll take a speaker up to radio shack and see if they have what you mentioned. Thanks again.

Very pleased with mine. I've had them for at least a week, maybe two. I finally have them permanently placed and hooked up.
I got my hundred bucks out of that Cambridge Soundworks 3 pc speaker set I've had for about 12-13 years, sounded good then. I think I might wear these out sooner because these crank better!

Sounds great. Bass is pretty good but a sub woofer might be in order but not a necessity at all for me, for now.

I don't know...after some time with these things (I actually contacted their support, which was very good, to get a new set of ac plugs as I was having connection issues), with new connections, I'm not at all impressed with their performance.

1 of 3 things happened here: either my expectations were too high; or the speakers I got were junk to begin with.....or the speakers I got were junk to begin with (no, that's not a typo).
