That's a question best addressed to Sony.
The implementation mentioned in this thread will NOT work as-is because the Sony Dash does NOT allow external applications to be run.

Thanks for clarifying that Amazon Videos work. A huge plus for me.

How is shoutcast app? I really want to use it as an internet radio/video player and nothing else. Well, maybe weather station... and a bit of FB updates...

I am planning to buy 2; one for bedroom and one for kitchen. Is it possible to configure both using the same sony account? It would be great if all the settings were same/similar on both the devices.

Currently you can also buy it on Amazon for $99.95 (plus free shipping).

After going back-and-forth on this all morning, finally decided to go for it.

Not sure I'll use it for much other than waking up to Pandora, but there's really no other comparable and cheaper device that lets me do that.

I have 2 on the same account. I created channels for each device and was surprised to find that all the channels I made are available on both devices.

On another note, neither the official chumby 8 browser nor the hacked silvermoon one that runs on the infocast will run on the Dash. Sony has locked down the OS pretty tight. They have hinted that they will release one of their own but that's anybody's guess.

As a postscript, I really like the devices after I finally got the updates to work, no thanks to woot. Just don't expect an Ipad.

My only complaint is that HD netflix videos will only play 30sec at a time. I have 10mb internet speed, maybe that's the problem. Is this just me? Other than that, I love this friggin thing

OK I've lowered my expectations after reading all the posts. So even if it functions as a web based photo viewer and alarm clock with a half decent screen it'll be all good. I've always wanted a web-based photo frame. Heck, I bought a 7 inch Philips photo frame for more 2 years ago that wasn't even wireless! The other stuff will just be added bonus.

I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 but still thought that I can leave this in one place rather than move it around. I can't really afford to use my iPad 2 as a photo frame!!
And if it still doesn't satisfy, craigslist will come to the rescue!

This should also make a good Father's Day gift BTW.

$69 alarm clock with news headlines? Only the headlines that alone would make me mad. .A cellphone can wake you up to music .. Put that money toward something like a tablet guess people will buy anything with sony's name on it.Hulu netflix ?A psp will do the same thing if you have a ps3.. Also use my psp as a phone with skype even out on the road with a portable router with battery that can fit in my pocket..So I do not need a cellphone.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents, having just bought the Chumby last time it was up.

I don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but devices like this are PERFECT to sit in the bathroom! I can play Pandora while I shower, and while I shave and get ready at the sink, it cycles through the weather, news, my facebook feed, ESPN, Woot, and of course, a clock! The best part is, I don't even have to touch it.

Priceless in this aspect.

No it is not just you, HD videos are hard to watch on this. As is the boghog Van Dyke show. Can't get that show to work at all. Everything else is cool, though.

I can be a pretty heavy sleeper -- and without it cranked anywhere near to full volume it still wakes me up pretty well. I don't think you'd find it a problem.

The news apps I have loaded scroll through headlines -- if I see one that interests me, I tap it and the article opens up.... it's not headlines only.

I live on Manhattan and have a credit card address on Manhattan. The code worked for me today ordering the Dash.

So it works.

Did you try it on this or a different product? Remember it only works for items that cost $40 (or was it $50?) or more.

Press the "snooze" button on the top, then select the onscreen "button" for night mode, then hit the power saver button that shows on the night mode screen and the screen goes black. In night mode it's black with the time in thin white numbers. If someone posted otherwise, they haven't played with the device to look at their options.

There are apps to connect to gmail and pop3 accounts -- other than that, there doesn't seem to be an app for email. So if you're looking to connect to an exchange account, unless pop3 is enabled for it, you won't be able to do that.

That "full article" functionality depends on the app. Some provide it, some don't. The ones that do, however, tend to be well-known providers, like the NY Times. The better apps will auto-scroll the article so you don't have to touch the device, and also let you scroll manually using the touchscreen.

Also, if you don't have time to read the full article or want to save it for reference, the better apps have an email button that with one touch will email the article to the address on file with your device account at Chumby.

keepu wrote:Have they updated this thing so it's more than just a poorly designed alarm clock with a few widgets?

I like mine and don't find it to be "poorly designed" as an alarm clock at all. The snooze button on the top functions as it should, snooze times can be set to suit the user.. I like 15 minutes and my older alarm clock is hardset to 9 (9? who came up with 9?), you can set alarms for multiple times per day, different alarms set for different days, and wake to pretty much anything you want to from a decent assortment of "alarm noises" to net radio and video..... I find it to be extraordinarily great as an alarm clock actually. The ability to customize your alarms based on pretty much any criteria you'd like is excellent IMO. If I want to wake on Monday at 8am to classical music, Tuesday at 7am to Jazz, Wednesday at 2pm to Rock and Roll, with a 2nd, alarm at 10pm, etc. I can do that. I can also NAME the various sets of alarm settings to suit myself so that I know what each one is and easily access and change them. I can't imagine a better alarm clock.

p.s. it uses chumby channel. (sames as sony dash or Chumby) i think you can create a chumby channel and use an old laptop with the same result, it will cycle through your flash clocks, webcams and other web feeds

I kind of want one of these, but is there a Chumby application to browse the web that will work on here? Otherwise this thing is pretty useless.

Can I do any type of gaming on it? I'd be happy with simple games, puzzle games, etc.

If I can meet both of those needs I'd buy one right now as I don't have a laptop.

Well, I've had one for a couple of months now and highly recommend getting one if you want a super-whammy alarm clock with bells and whistles you never thought of for one before. There may be some apps you can add in that do that, but I have yet to see one. I have 18 apps loaded and haven't seen any ads via any of them at this point.... won't tell you there aren't any that do that, but I haven't run into any at this point.

For these purposes this unit is perfect. For other uses the interface is a bit clunky. Setup was very easy for me except fo the fact that you must manually enter the address for the music streams you want but once there set up you are good to go. It's also very easy to set up multiple alarms and schedule them for specific days and times.

I think that the screen is too small for watching movies (that's what laptops and iPads are for). I also have not found much use for the other available applications.

I paid $79.99 and I thought it was a good deal. The current deal has me tempted to pick up another...

Seems like an expensive alarm clock, and I really don't see other good uses!

I bought one of these the last time Woot offered them. It's a nice little gadget. Granted the internet connection for this thing isn't lightening fast, but for what I do on it, it works fine. I primarily use it for an alarm clock, but sometimes I'll sit it on my bed, and look for a netflix movie to watch if I cannot fall asleep. Note, you cannot do this unless you register it w/the Sony MyDash site. In fact, a lot of the features are not available until you register the product. It worked fantastic for about a week until I lost all power to my home for about 8 hours. Once I got power back, my wireless router had reset so I had to redo all the set up w/both my wireless router and MyDash. MyDash recognized my new wireless router account info, and even says it successfully connected, but to this day continues to default to an error message telling me there is a mismatch of user and registered account info w/the Sony site. Even after resetting it back to factory defaults several times, it doesn't work. If I could just get this darn thing working again, it would be a wonderful thing, but so for it's proven to be little more than a paper weight on my nightstand.. a poor one at that because it's very light in weight. If anyone out there, has had similar issues, and knows how to fix this, please post it on here. I've tried things from the Sony knowledge base online, but nothing has worked so far.

Sony help desk is useless... USELESS I TELL YOU!!! They do not know how to correct this issue, and each time they say they're going to escalate to a higher tier of technical help, and someone will call me. They never call, even when I call them back. It's been nothing but a viscious cycle, and many hours of frustration on the phone w/them. Hopefully, yours will work flawlessly, and if you have to call their tech help people... best of luck to you.

I am such a sucker. In for one... Can't resist this in my bedroom, and keeping my Chumby in the kitchen (mostly for Pandora while cooking)... And I will probably by v2 next year, too!

Why do people keep commenting about using this while driving (and distracting drivers)? This is not a portable car toy, folks...

Now, when you unplug this, will it reset like a normal clock? People mentioning using it in the bathroom have given me ideas, but I don't want to lose my settings every time I shift it from bedside to crapperside and vice versa.

I bought one last time it was on Woot and I can say that it really is an awesome device. For the price you pay you really get so much. It's in my kitchen now and we use it for weather, quick search for YouTube videos, recipes, calendar, Pandora, news, and even netflix or amazon.

I know people will say, "well you can do that with an iPad", well this device doesn't cost $500. And for what I use it for, it does just the trick.

It's a great gift too. I'm thinking about getting it for my niece who's graduating High School and will need multiuse devices in college.

Good Luck
