Plug it into your computer (as has been mentioned here numerous times) or any USB AC wall socket.

Al lot of us ordered more than one & got shorted. I hope Woot ships them today & doesn't just blow off the whole debacle until after the holiday. Mistakes happen. I'm sure Woot will make it right quickly.

We take this stuff pretty seriously. As far as I'm aware, we're shipping these within 24 hours of putting the replacements in. But, because of the holiday weekend, shipping might not be as fantastically fast, but we are getting them out.

Mine came this morning (much prefer FedEx here, they deliver before 10am, while UPS delivers after 6pm). In perfect shape, nothing missing, half-charged.

True, it would have been good to have a paper Get-Started folder, but no matter. I registered it on the Amazon.com site after logging on there, quite simple.

I have a some questions I hope some will answer or point to answers.

1. I plan on using it (and its Whispernet) in Mexico City. Do I have to do anything, or will it simply work?

2. How to load free books? Others have mentioned this and I hope there's a simple guide somewhere listing all the free sources.

Edit: Amazon has zillions of free books, and other sources are scattered throughout these comments. The calibre software looks like a great format converter and searcher of books too.

3. I got into the Experimental section where they have a number of pre-selected web sites one can visit. Is it possible to use this as a general browser? No matter if it's slow and cumbersome.

Ordered one for my wife, and received it today. Gave it to her. She was extremely happy. Discovered it won't connect to 3g or WiFi. She was extremely unhappy. What to do? This was my first Woot, not sure who to contact.

BTW, in case someone has trouble connecting the 3G wireless, try this. I had trouble, called tech support, and the trick is to first turn off wireless, and then Restart. Don't simply Restart with wireless still on. The tech person said if you first turn off wireless, then Restart, it searches for cell towers instead of using the previous (weak) one. Definitely worked for me.

Mine was also broken, no 3G. Seems to be a common issue. Find the Amazon customer service link for the Kindle and they will send you a new one. Mine is coming next week.

PS: There is no wifi on this model, only 3G

My Kindle arrived yesterday. Unpacked it tonight to start loading it with books for the weekend, and found that the joystick/joynub was broken! I called Amazon and within minutes they had me all set with a replacement being delivered Wednesday. Too late for this weekend, but at least they're on it...

Just so no one's confused: The Kindle 2 has NO wi-fi; it's 3G only.

Anyone else either not have or have a serial number on their Kindle? Mine arrived yesterday and I registered and started charging it last night using my iPad adapter. I started playing around with it this morning, decided to check for software updates and found this page on Amazon which has the update to v2.58 of the software. That's the latest which will run on the 2nd generation models.

While going through the steps to download and install the s/w, I saw mention of looking on the back for the serial number, but when I checked it was nowhere to be found. I found the following image during a Google image search which showed what the serial number should look like, but this area is completely blank on the Kindle I received from Woot.

Could this be an issue in the future with warranty claims? I was able to locate the s/n in Settings/Device Info, but it's not engraved on the back.

Thanks for this, my Kindle had v2.54...I thought it would notify if there were newer software but I guess not.

Mine doesn't have the SN on the back either. I'm guessing Amazon can save a few pennies per Kindle by not stamping the back with individual information...

Just got mine. yikes no power cord(just joshing)
Powering up with one of the numerous cables I have amassed from all of former WOOTS. No printed instruction. But why would you need them.
The Kindle walks you through all the steps.
I guess if you are so inclined they tell you where you can print the instructions so be my guest kill another tree.I just bought some sansa clips recently and they came with absolutely nothing for instructions. But even my non tech savvy wife had hers up and running after asking a couple of questions. So take it from a person with a moderate WOOT, SELLOUT WOOT,MOOFI AND KIDS WOOT Malady.Trust your knowledge(you found WOOT DIDN'T YOU?
I know I am asking for trouble. But since 01/11/2005 I have only had one minor issue with a product. And I would say 50% of the blame was my lack of understanding the description of the product.

you know this kindle has weaker signal than my first kindle must be that they are using the gsm(att) version instead of the cdma (sprint) version that piggybacks on Verizon's towers for roaming

I received mine in four days. Starting up it only needed 30 minutes to acheive a full charge. Problem: the next page and previous page buttons didn't work correctly. Would have to hit at least three time and then the search window popped up and puts a "3" (rt next page) "4" (left next page) or a "5" (prev page)in the search box. Called AMAZON and within five minutes a new one was scheduled for delivery. Slick, you print out the UPS label for the return.

Sorry for you guys who ordered multiples but only got one. At least you got that. I got nothing. Wrote and asked, since I never got a confirmation. They basically said they saw no proof I ordered one. I responded with all I had (yeah, foolishly did not print out my confirmation page), which was the browser history, including a Woot page history called OrderConfirmation.aspx from 5/23 at 8:45 AM. To that, they chose not to respond at all.
Was wondering if anyone else got the Bag o' Nothing

borktroll wrote:Fedex left my package somewhere and when I got home from work it was nowhere to be found.

My assumption is the worst-case scenario that someone stole it. Have called fedex and established a trace number for a lost package, and my landlord to see if they have it.

Is there anything I can do to get another one?

Same thing happened to me. FedEx left it outside by the front entrance to my apt. complex! Luckily for me it was still there when I got home from work. I was very pleasantly surprised at the quick shipping, but disappointed that I got no e-mail from WOOT telling me it was shipped.

BTW, for those looking for a manual, it is on the Kindle itself. Just power it up and read the "Getting Started" page found in menu.

Method of payment? Did you check to see if you were charged?

I was thrilled to get this and haven't put it down since it came last Thursday. Then I noticed some things. Can anyone tell me if these are due to it being a re-furb or if I should try to return it (booo!!)

1. First charge was Thursday, already half battery life. I took someone's advice on here and turned off the 3G - I guess we'll see if that makes a big difference?

2. When I turn it off, you can still see the ink imprint lightly through the "off" screen, it doesn't go totally blank. Is this typical?

3. There is a small bow in the screen frame casing on the bottom edge, it isn't totally flush.

If these things are typical for a refurb, I'll just be happy I got it for the price and keep it, but are any of these a dealbreaker? Thoughts??

Didn't get charged; just disappointed that I did everything right (except for the aforementioned failure to print confirmation sheet) and don't get my discount Kindle. Mostly wondered if I was alone.

Hi ADQ,

Can you please ask Kam to look at customer service case W-822068-31B5. I know it was a holiday weekend, but I still have an open question and haven't heard from him since Thursday morning.

Thanks!

I still have not received the 2 kindles I ordered. It seemed to go to New Jersey and died there. FedEx said it had a NJ zip code but I checked my account info and it is correct. My wife is yelling at me and berating me for her missing Kindle. Can you figure out where it is and send it to me ASAP.

I got a USB cable but no wall plug or instructions with mine- I called Amazon and they sent me a free one with a new cable as well and said my 1 year warranty on the refurb I bought from Woot was legit.

zanybabe wrote:I bought the new one on Woot last year for almost double. Ah well!
After comparing this 2nd gen to the 3rd gen I would opt for the 3rd gen. For some reason I find the contrast too low on this version and find it frustrating to read as it bothers my eyes after a while. Although it seems many others don't seem to have this problem so YMMV. The 3rd gen is a big improvement of 50% contrast ratio, especially if you get the graphite version.

Since I bought my 2nd gen Kindle from Woot Amazon refused to do a refund, and only replaced it with a refurbished one after first 30 days had gone by since I had a slight problem with a funny white spot on the screen. This was very confusing as Woot had already been acquired by Amazon on the day they had the Kindle deal, but for all customer service purposes Amazon still regarded them as a separate seller. Woot would ask me to call Amazon and Amazon asked me to call Woot. Anyway, hope they have resolved this issue by now.

By the way, there has been talk of a new color Kindle too, so there may be something on the way.

Because you both gave a military address to ship to, it can take up to 8 weeks to arrive to you overseas. Tracking will stall out like that in NJ while it's in transit out of the states but will pick up again once your local post office gets the package in hand.
