GPS does not require 3g activation - but the apps using the GPS (like driving directions apps) might need 3g (or wifi) access to load maps unless the maps are included in the app or can be downloaded and stored for later use. For example, I vaguely remember that the Google maps app has the ability to store maps for the specific route you looked up, but if you stray too far from the route, then you will be without map data.

No ideas about Skype?

I'm sure people probably asked "what's the point of a netbook if you have a laptop" when netbooks came out.

The answer usually was something in the lines of more mobility -- lighter, smaller, longer battery life -- while sacrificing advanced features, such as games or other processor-intensive work.

Tablets would basically have the same reason -- more mobility than a netbook.

If you already have a laptop or netbook and are satisfied with the mobility it offers, "what's the point of a tablet" is a very good reason not to get a tablet :D

You cannot upgrade these Sprint or Verizon tabs since they are CDMA to the Overcome 2.3.3 with gingerbread. That sucks. All the GSM versions with SIM cards can be, but not Sprint or Verizon. Anybody confirm this? Over at XDA the update is specific to the GSM tabs, I have not seen anything on the CDMA tabs...

Seems like a lot of money for last year's technology. Honeycomb is starting to hit the shelves. Everyone that bought one today will wish they had waited come mid-Summer.

Simple really, ease of access and portability. My wife and I both were avid laptop users. We also have a big Core i7 desktop for video editing and photo storage. But what do you use a laptop for? Things that you don't want to be tied to a desktop for, like checking the internet and looking at pictures, and playing simple games like sodoku or Bejeweled.

Well the tablet takes it one step further by releasing you from charging as often, having a much smaller and more portable device. Example, you probably don't walk around the house to random locations with your laptop, you likely use it in one or two spots. A tablet you can literally use where-ever without having to lug around a laptop. I say lug as if its heavy, but once you start using a tablet for your basic laptop tasks, your laptop will be rendered pretty cumbersome by comparison.

If you like your laptop or you use it for more complex things than just browsing and simple gaming, then it will still be useful, but you won't touch it as much. Does that justify buying a tablet in the first place? Absolutely not. Only you and your wallet can decide that.

That said, my wife and I hardly use our laptops now. She is on a trip and for the first time did not bring her laptop, opting for her iPad in an otterbox instead. I am departing on an extended trip and already shipped out my laptop so it will be there when I get there, but I also am opting to carry my Asus Transformer with me over the laptop, for the plane and cross-country portion.

you don't have to pay for the data plan if you don't want to

I tried double twist with my android... it still leaves a lot to be desired. I ended up just going back to the stock media player, as bad as it is.

How does woot get 1800 of these refurbished units? Is there some kind of giant underground economy that revolves around refurbishing and reselling stuff?

Darn...sold out! Tried to order from my Storm2 (one of the crappiest "smart" phones ever made IMHO) and couldn't get it to go through. Now I'm home and it's sold out :-(

Right. I was mainly just touching on "out of the box" talking points. I assumed that if someone was asking how the two differ, they might not be someone willing to root their device or pay for additional storage.

Out of the box without any customization or additional purchases, those are the differences between the two.

These might be those who bought it recently, then heard about the 10.1" one, and decided to return the 7" one to hold out for the newer one. I've got the 10.1" one and I love it, but I got this one for my wife because she was interested in the Nook Color.

When Google Music is available for all (you can sign up for an invite), it comes with an application that can sync your iTunes music to Google Music. Then, using the Google Music app, you can stream your music from the cloud. There is also a way to specify which music you want to have synced to the device, for playback while offline.

in a word "wirelessly". Any WiFi enabled device nearby(such as the Tab) will connect to the internet via the hotspot ability of the Evo or whichever device the previous person mentioned. The "tethering" is wireless. I think the range is about 20 ft.

I too am waiting for the tablet to ship. I emailed them and there response is pretty much we are going to take the whole 5 business days before we mail it out.

Sounds kind of like to me they do not even have the product in stock yet to mail out! I knew deals on here must of been too good to be true!

I think we were hoping that it would be "within" vs "on" the 5(th) day(s).

i dont think so. but if you flash cyanogenmod, which is a custom firmware, you can choose from multiple foreign languages including chinese, korean and japanese
