if its like verizon you dont have to have a contract you can just activate it..You can stop paying it when you want to..

You don't need to activate it. Just hit the home button. Takes you to the main menu.

Use SuperOneClick 1.7 (SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse.zip) to root the device and then to get rid of the annoying Sprint Activation notification that says "Activation Not Completed", rename the SprintAdroidExtension.apk in /system/app to SprintAdroidExtension.apk.old and reboot. I also recommend installing AdFree from BigTinCan.

Additionally, I think the device that the Engadget article is referring to that might be getting the gingerbread update is the Evo 4G

Just got my tab in the mail today and I've tried the volume button bypass but with no luck. Any ideas why it's not working? Just to clarify when people say "Activation Screen" they mean when you turn the tab on and it tries to automatically setup 3G activation, right?

Samsung has been rolling out Gingerbread to Galaxy Tabs overseas already. There are ROMS floating around the interwebs from official overseas builds.

My biggest disappointment so far is that it doesn't seem to have any onboard memory at all. If you want to store any files, you've got to have an SD card. The wifi only version has onboard memory on it and you can add an SD card to boot.

I have not received mine yet. From the specs, Samsung Sprint Galaxy Tab should come with 16GB microSD card. It should have 2GB built-in ROM.

RAM: 592MB, ROM: 2GB
16GB microSD Card Included

http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/SPH-P100ZKASPR-features

Wifi only version does come with 16GB onboard in addition to mSD card slot.

ps: GSM version such as Att and T-Mobile has 16GB onboard and mSD card slot like Wifi version. That feature makes GSM tablets slightly better than CDMA tablets. GSM tablets can have more storage space than CDMA tablets. They can use mSD card in addition to the built-in 16GB internal memory.

Yeah Fedex hasn't updated my tracking info since 1:00 am on June 2. Kind of annoying, but all it really comes down to is just me being excited to get my hands on it.

It does. I'm just disappointed because I'm moving from a wifi only Galaxy Tab. The wifi only version has 16 GB of onboard memory you can do whatever you want with (sync music, pictures, top secret government documents, etc.....). Then it has a micro-sd slot. Toss a 32 GB card in there (as I did) and you've got 48 GB of memory available to you.

Can someone please let me know can I activate this on sprint 3g without a contract (month-to-month). Also does it have 'N'?

doesn't really matter to me, the only thing i NEED to store locally / on sd card is apps. everything else is in the cloud. whoooosh!!!! (or some other techy noise!)

but i definitely see your point. on-board memory is certainly nice for when you're out of coverage areas and have no wifi.

but in the bigger picture of things, you're probably better off with a 3G version than you are with the wifi only, even with minimal onboard memory. wifi only version doesn't have the same chipset as the 3g versions:

I'm with you. Att and T-Mobile Galaxy Tab tablets has the same 16GB internal memory as Wifi version. That makes GSM Galaxy Tab better than CDMA tab. I really missed $200 refurbished Galaxy Tab Att offered last month.

I wasn't aware that the GSM tab and the CDMA Tab had different specs just in terms of internal memory. I thought they were identical except for different versions of the 3G radio of course. I'm of the opinion that ATT is evil so I'm not too bummed about missing that deal since it involved signing up for service with them. I don't know why you would make a device nowadays that DIDN'T have at least 8 GB of onboard memory.

Seems to be some misunderstanding about the device specs. You can pull the specs down here for GSM, Wifi and CDMA versions:

http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sQuickSearch=yes&sName=samsung+galaxy+tab

The CDMA version has 2Gigs of internal memory BTW...

Got mine today, plugged in and got charging underway then (while still plugged in booted up). Right away I got a screen that let me choose 3G/WiFi or WiFi only. I selected the latter and I didn't get any kind of nag screen about activation at all. Perhaps it will come later?

In the meantime it did try to grab an update from somewhere.

I can tell I have a steep learning curve ahead.

Its Fedex Ground....it doesn't get updated as frequently because its in a truck from Texas to your nearest depot. The next time it updates is when the night before it goes out for delivery.

OK, this is far out.
On the box, no mention of N. Just b and g.
When I try and join my N network, It just doesn't see it. Its like the SSID isn't broadcasting, which it is.
My literature says it supports N.

I guess I am gonna just have to do some digging.

I never saw any sort of screen like that. I turned mine on and it started trying to activate with Sprint. Of course it can't without me setting up an account with them so I got the nag screen every time I rebooted until I went in and disabled those APKs as suggested. I'll turn them back on when I hear there's a GB update I guess.

I have the Sprint Tab that I purchased from Meritline last week (Wife's Tab ordered
From Woot coming today) and I'm using the my N wireless network without issue.

quality posts: 0 Private Messages Joel The Great

When mine arrived it asked if I wanted to do the 3G/Wifi or Wifi only, I selected Wifi only and got no activation prompt of any kind.

Mine connects to my Wireless N router just fine, but I don't really know if it's connecting via N, or G, or B, or whatever. I just know it works, and for a Tablet I don't really think speeds above G really will make that big of a difference.

The problem with Android (all android, not just the Tab), is they can't see ad-hoc networks. Unless you root it and make a modification or two (btw, rooting it is not that difficult).

And to those disappointed about the storage amounts...do you not research things? It says all over the internets that it has 2GB onboard and comes with a 16GB microSD card.

FOR SPRINT GALAXY TABs - DEACTIVATION OF SPRINT ACTIVATION MESSAGE ON BOOT and ACTIVATE DEVICE NOTIFICATIONS.

Ok well the verizon method of bypassing the activation everytime you start the tab doesnt work (vol up once, vol down twice, etc. etc.)

I used the 2nd post in:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866162

to try and deactivate the activation screen, but it bricked my Sprint Tab. I had to use the rom available here which messes up GPS and modem. But anyway foxmeister mentioned why not just go to the app and delete, freeze, it.

1) I used Root explorer and went to:
/system/app/

2) put the folder in R/W mode (look at top for button)

3) now look for -
sprintadroidextension.apk

4) long hold press it, either copy it and paste it in another folder as backup.

5) go back to /system/app/ and long hold press sprintadroidextension.apk
again and Delete it.

6) put the folder back in R/O mode.

Now restart and you should not see anymore activation messages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =]

Thank you to : foxmeister, sirmacbeth, rkmj

RKMJ stated you can try to use Titanium Backup and freeze the app instead of deleting it. I just deleted it and it WORKS =].

I also saved a backup in another folder so in case i need the app i'll have it.
I'll try to upload the apk for anyone who needs it later.

I made a separate topic on this because 1) i tried it and it worked 2) the other thread is confusing and can lead you to brick your sprint tab fast.

Got mine at noon today, west coast time. It works perfectly. The only thing that seems remotely "refurbished" about it is the box, which has light wear and tear. After it charged to 30% it announced it had a software update. Anyone else getting this?
