No need to worry about the hardware or the operating system. We first got the Samsung Captivate cellphone from ATT. It runs on Android 2.2. Loved it so much we stepped up and got the Verizon Samsung Galaxy 7" tablet, which, again uses Android 2.2. Earlier versions of Android were crappy, but the 2.2 and later versions are what Microsoft CE is still shooting for.

Samsung has its crosshairs on taking out Apple and the iPad. They showed a larger 10 inch version of the Galaxy, and another version which is smaller. The hardware works great, and the Android keeps getting better.

Oh, you might be interested in knowing that the company that makes the chips that go into iPads is ... Samsung. Tata!

I am pretty sure I read an article somewhere stating that the Galaxy Tab 7" would not be receiving any more updates to its OS. Don't quote me on it, but with the next generation tabs coming out soon, the support for the first gen models might disappear.

Sprint doesn't use SIM cards. The ID circuitry is hardwired inside the phone.

I'm tempted, but not sure I want to buy one of the first Android tablets with all of the current and soon to be released offerings. I'm leaning toward the Asus tablet right now, which some say is the best tab on the market, regardless of OS.

I'll buy Android over Apple any day of the week...

If you're not going to use the 3G (and I wouldn't, since I already have an Android phone on Verizon), would this have any advantages over the B&N Nook Color? (Which is $249 for a new one with WiFi...)

But seriously, why? Why does this happen?

I'm pretty sure that in Europe, people can just go to a different country (or stay in the same one), pick a different carrier, get a different SIM card, and keep using their phone / tablet / etc.

Why isn't it like that in the states? Do you suppose things could get better?

After we picked up ATT's cellphone version of the Galaxy tablet -- the Samsung Captivate -- we went ahead and got the Galaxy tablet. Not from ATT though, but from Verizon. The Galaxy tablet was a refurbished version for $149 and a two year contract. The two year contract was relatively cheap, when compared to ATT or Sprint. We pay $20 a month, plus about $0.16 in tax for 1 gigabyte of data usage per month. We figured that for a two year contract, we would have paid $240 for 1 gigabyte of 3G access per month. Added to the $149, our total cost for the two year ordeal would be about $390. These numbers work out for us.

You must be a diehard Apple fan. Samsung makes the chips that go into Apple iPads. And they've already announced Android 3.0 version of their larger tablets. The upgrade of Android to the tablets that are sold through the cellphone companies is not within Samsung's control. The cellphone companies decide whether or not they want to upgrade their client base OS or not.

In case anyone misses it, this comes with the Swype keyboard -- this is bar none the best onscreen keyboard I've found on any platform. You just run your fingertip over the keys to spell out words rather than tapping; it's much faster than tapping. As you get used to it and as it gets used to you, you can adjust the settings so the suggested word list pops up more or less often. I have always been very picky about phones that have a very good physical keyboard, but with Swype, I don't care any more.

Woot, give us the same tablet except one that has a SIM card and GSM for the same price and i would be in even though my $200 ATT deal got canceled. Just saying... having this locked to Sprint is a deal breaker.

If you have Sprint it's fine. Aside from that you can get a new WIFI only unit on Amazon for about the same price as this refurb model with squaretrade warranty. hope this helps some on the fence.

Now if there was a nice 10-20% off coupon code then this would sway me otherwise...

I'm with you here...while I'd love to get a tablet, and if I were to buy one tomorrow, I'd be looking at the Viewsonic G, as a local retailer has it for $300, but it's nothing I can't wait on until the fall, when either the new models are worthy of consideration, or they drive the price of the older ones down. In the meantime, I'll likely be getting the new Nook, for reading purposes.

When we travel we usually take our Clear 3G/4G USB modem with us, but we found we could use the Samsung tablet as a hotspot. We have Verizon 3G connecting the Samsung tablet to the internet and with the tablet's ability to convert to a hotspot, we no longer need the Clear 3G/4G USB modem, or any USB modem for that matter. We cancelled Clear which was costing us $55 a month (unlimited 4G and 5gb of 3G, which we never reached) and use the Verizon 1gb monthly hotspot access which costs us only $20 a month.

There are two dominant technologies in use in the US: CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (T-mobile, AT&T). Both technologies have their advantages.

For example, CDMA serves low-density, widely spread populations (like the middle of the US) better. On the other hand, GSM is used in more of the world and handles data and voice better. There are variations within these technologies as to what frequencies are used and so forth, as well.

So in the U.S. we've competing carriers with competing technology running the wireless networks. European countries, on the other hand, are standardized on GM. While there are good things about philosophies, of course, the lack of interoperability is an obvious annoyance.

Samsung tab has a single core cpu while xoom, Acer,Asus, viewsonic gtablet have dual core cpus

Samsung tab will probably never see honeycomb, they are too busy with their version 2....$ame as samsung captivate will never get gingerbread

The Nook Color is missing some things like the camera(s) and the full Android Marketplace. Also, the Galaxy Tab has twice the memory.

Finally, with the Galaxy Tab, you can run the Nook app... but you can also run the Kindle app... the Google Books app... and any other eReader app, so you're not locked into a particular store.

However, from a pure eReader standpoint, if you're only going to use it to read books and only plan to use B&N to get your eBooks, the Nook Color should suffice.

Much better. Coby didn't get a license from Google to access the market so you're missing a lot (there are other places to get apps besides the Android market though). More and more tablet optimized apps are being added all the time and many non-tablet optimized apps work fine.
