Ahh tempting. I had one of these in my previous job and had to give back when I left. I am now tablet free and going through withdrawal. I thought this size was great. It will fit in your pocket if your wearing Dockers. It's a great size for movies and reading also. I also have tried a XOOM, it was really nice but for the money I liked the Tab better.

Went to my local B&M store last week to check out the tablet PCs (my wife wanted a Playbook). I was fortunate enough to talk to the store manager about their offering and was surprised to hear that (get this) a full 95% of all of the tablets thet sell are returned!!! The main reason that they are returned was because they failed to live up to customer expectations. Manufacturers have been so successfull in over-hyping their tablets that now it is comming back to haunt them.

OK, so I'm a dummy when it comes to these things.

Can I get one of these and just use it as a wifi device ? No activation, no sim card switching, no modifying ? Just turn it on and connect to my home wifi or local hotspot ?

Its not really "Hacking". Its innovation. Jailbreaking and Rooting are now perfectly legal and Android is open source.

So the term "Hacking" is used in the best possible sence, in this case.

Don't be a hater. =)

Have the lag issues from the original Galaxy S phones (Captivate) been resolved in this model?

Someone mentioned no Netflix, but I found this:

Netflix on Android Update

They only support a few phones. No word on tablets, so I wonder if it will work on this.

If not now, I'm sure it will be soon.

Yes. And the apps will still work without the hotspot, but you'll need to be connected to wifi to do anything on the Interwebs.

Dang. I just bought the gTab a few weeks ago, and I haven't really used it much because I haven't had time to learn how to root it. It's also bigger than I thought, and I imagine this 7" would be perfect.

Heard great things about this.

This is a fantastic tablet. We have two, one for myself and one for my wife if that says anything.

I do hope they come out with an update soon, but there are no problems that I have with it now... it would just make it better if there was an update.

I love the galaxy tabs and use it every day since I purchased them 5 months ago!

And I don't agree with this post. The 7 inch tablet is the perfect size. Not too big to carry around daily (like the iPad), and not too small to have to squint while looking or have trouble reading for long periods of time.

It's the perfect size in my opinion.

The apps are the ones that you would find on the market. I have the Verizon version of and you have a lot of apps that you can install.

And this is true, you can get them for $200 new from most carriers... but you are required to sign up for a minimum data plan on a month-to-month term. Keep in mind you will also have to pay for the activation fee ($35), and at least a period of time of service before you cancel, so the cost would come out nearly the same. You just wouldn't have the hassle of signing up for a plan here.

But, I assume like yourself, I like having the 3G coverage w/the data plan.

BIGELLOW wrote:The Nook Color is missing some things like the camera(s) and the full Android Marketplace. Also, the Galaxy Tab has twice the memory.

Finally, with the Galaxy Tab, you can run the Nook app... but you can also run the Kindle app... the Google Books app... and any other eReader app, so you're not locked into a particular store.

However, from a pure eReader standpoint, if you're only going to use it to read books and only plan to use B&N to get your eBooks, the Nook Color should suffice.

For the record, a rooted Nook Color has full access to the Android Marktplace, and can run the Kindle app, Google Books app, and any other eReader app that exists on the Android platform. That being said, the Nook does lack a camera and GPS chip, so if those are important for your tablet experience (in addition to the whole 3G thing) then the Nook probably isn't something to consider.

[Edit] In addition, the Nook has 8GB of internal memory with the ability to add up to 32GB through a MicroSD card.

I've skimmed through comments quickly, but here's a quick review.

I bought a 'certified used' through sprint for $150 plus $20 per gig per month for two years ($630 over 2 years). The new one was and still is $200, but the minimum plan seems to now be $30 for two gig ($920). http://now.sprint.com/tab/

This looks like a great deal for wifi only use. this version is 3g only, hence why it's suddenly available. That won't affect wifi without a data plan (or in areas without 4g).

Though there are references to Sprint features this one seems to be without sprint contract making this a great deal. I was pondering buying a second one for wifi only use. I have wifi at home but not at work and the company internet is heavily filtered. So I use it for break time browsing and haven't used more than 1/4 of a gig with occasional video or poscast viewing.

I assume the speaker jack supports the 1/8" headphone/microphone, but it deffinatly works with plain 1/8" headphones.

The default Android browser tells sites that it is a mobile and they usually re-direct you to mobile pages and block video. You can install Opera or Dolphin browser and switch to desktop mode and it lets you watch comedycentral video, but Hulu is still blocked.

It is still a (large) mobile device and video Streaming seems to be hit or miss at times even with wifi connections. Downloading videos I haven't had playback issues and seems to support a decent range of formats.

I currently have Skype working over wifi only, with a $25 a year unlimited dial out (dial in is extra). However, Microsoft/Blackberry bought skype so I hope they don't pull it from Android. I miss gizmo.

This is a great tablet. It is powerful enough to run everyday apps with ease, big enough to read with, and small enough not to be a burden.

This tablet is more powerful than the Wifi only version. The Wifi only version has an older cpu and less powerful graphics (cost cutting measure).

You can use the tablet without signing up for a Sprint plan, in order to use it as a wifi-only tablet. You'll need to do some file editing to make the activation notice go away though.

Unlike virtually all of the cheaper tablets out there, this one has the android marketplace installed. No need to root.

If you are in the market for an affordable, decent seven inch tablet, don't hesitate. Go for this one!

You can load Honeycomb, but most of it doesn't work, with no ETA on when it will. This tablet works great with 2.2, so if anyone is thinking of buying it to run Honeycomb, you'll be disappointed with both the timeliness of the release and the speed at which HC runs, and the compromises you'll have to make (some things just will never work properly). With no AOSP release of HC in sight, devs are forced to work with one hand tied behind their backs.

That said, this is still the best 7" tablet out there, and the price is amazing. Just don't get it thinking you're buying a hacker's delight.

Edit: Works great tethered to an Evo, no need for the Sprint 3G if you pay for the Sprint Hotspot on your Android phone, or if you've got a rooted phone with Wireless Tether (or a ROM with Sprint Hotspot unlocked ...)

I don't think they need to match. I think the shipping address is the part woot is strict on being US only. I'm not positive, though. Give it a shot! If you run into any trouble, send an email to service@woot.com with questions.

Edit: Oh, and welcome to woot! Enjoy your stay.

This may be a dumb question but can this be used simply as a phone? My wife needs a new phone and would like a tablet. This seems like a good halfway house. We don't want/need 3g, so the fact it has cdma does that mean we can switch her number to sprint and pop in a sim card?

Thanks, again this is probably a really obvious thing but no where here or on amazon does anyone talk about it being a cellular phone!

Yes it works with wifi only. And open hotspots are common, but not as easy to find when you are on the road... unless there is an ap for that.

Oh, and it has GPS. You can download route information and maps but it can't recalculate without a connection.

Hey guys,

I don't have any smartphone/android devices. Can you stream Netflix movies on these tablets? Is there an Android app that allows you to instantly watch movies?

This is the only selling point I can use with my wife on letting me buy a tablet.

Thanks in advance....

edit: Thanks folks. I'll take a wait and see approach with the netflix stuff.
