The attractiveness of the Woot deal is if you want to use the tablet without a contract - as a Wifi - only tablet. or if you don't want to be tied to a contract. You can't buy the Verizon one without the contract, where they get back their money.

Do people ask the same thing when current-gen refurb iPod Touches go on sale here?

Sprint has a 30-day refund policy on their mobile products. Perhaps a lot of people bought these things, and either balked at the contracts or just plain didn't like the tablet, and returned it. It can't be sold as new at that point, so it becomes a refurb.

If you look at that post and change the plan to month to month the price goes up to $499

Not yet. It's officially only available on certain devices, though some have been able to apply hacks to make it work on their phones. There are apparently DRM bits that need to be in place for it to work properly, and I wouldn't be surprised if the 2.3 update rectifies that.

This is Sprint which uses CDMA/EVDO technology and doesn't support SIM cards. AT&T and T-mobile use SIM cards. Verizon and Sprint do not.

radiorental wrote:This may be a dumb question but can this be used simply as a phone? My wife needs a new phone and would like a tablet. This seems like a good halfway house. We don't want/need 3g, so the fact it has cdma does that mean we can switch her number to sprint and pop in a sim card?

Thanks, again this is probably a really obvious thing but no where here or on amazon does anyone talk about it being a cellular phone!

No, it can't be used as a phone. Sprint at least disabled voice, you have a 'phone number' for data and for text/pictures ($.25 each or buy plan), but you can't make calls.

You can pay for a Skype plan. $18 for 3 months for a dial in number (Online Number they call it). Then pay 1.9cents per minute or $25 I think for unlimited for a year. You will still need a wifi connection or will be using data on the Sprint data plan.

There are also instructions to tie in a google voice number through gates and sip proxies and sip dialers, but they seem to be outdated or more complicated than I can figure out. Google voice used to work easily through Gizmo until Google bought it and shut it down. Gizmo's not needed for the desktop where it can install a plug in, but I haven't found a plugin for the android browser.

I have concerns about the quality of the refurb. If i am not happy with the quality, can i use the W00T 90 day warranty to get another unit or get a refund? I bought some refurbed cordless phones a few years ago, one out of the four was "beat up" but they all worked fine so I didn't worry about it. this is a different matter, I don't want to drop $260 on a "beat up" tablet.

does buying this tablet automatically sign us up for a 2 yr contract w/ sprint? or is this is a no-contract device?

can I get 3g once in a while when travelling w/ sprint or do I need to sign up for a contract if I ever want 3g?

Thanks! we use skype at home, we haven't paid for a landline in years. I have an iphone 4 that my brother bricked the baseband on so I just use it as a wifi phone and I dont mind people not being able to contact me while I'm away from wifi. My wife is a different matter though.

I bought the Tab anyway, her laptop is also on the way out, this will make a nice wifi device around the house. I've found some video of people enabling the cdma to receive calls and that this functionality is on by default in Europe. So the phone is certainly capable of making calls and paired up with bluetooth it would make a handy device. The only sticking point is that she would not be able to transfer a number and have sprint associate a Tab with her account.

The videos I've found and reports on amazon comment is that Sprint will not allow people to activate Tabs without a contract and while you can make calls, they're for "free", meaning the network is being tricked and I'd assume they will catch that at some point.

Adding my .02. I have the Tab, and just put it in airplane mode to shut off the annoying activate messages. I use it in wifi mode either tied to my home net or to the Sprint hotspot on my Epic.

I have the Viewsonic G as well. Both are great tablets, but the Tab wins hands down for purse friendly size; the display is bright and sharp, battery life is good, and the screen touch sensitive (more so than the Viewsonic). And this is a very good price. I have gotten refurbs through W00t before, and have yet to be disappointed.

Keep in mind you will also have to pay for the activation fee ($35), and at least a period of time of service before you cancel, so the cost would come out nearly the same. You just wouldn't have the hassle of signing up for a plan here.

But, I assume like yourself, I like having the 3G coverage w/the data plan.

Just checked AT&T and this refurb is $349.00 with purchace of $14.99 month data plan???

2 questions:

- Does anyone know if I can tether this to my Verizon cell phone, which has an unlimited data plan? What kind of connector wire would be needed?

- Do any wireless service providers allow you to share one plan between 2 devices - like a cell phone and a tablet sharing one plan?

You can install a modded version of the Netflix .apk and it works perfectly if you have a Gingerbread ROM on the Tab. I use it regularly on my T-mo Galaxy Tab.

I went for it. I use Overdrive on my Epic 4G constantly to read ebooks from the library and having a bigger screen to read on sounds like a workable plan.

Lately I find that I'm always pulling out the phone around the house to look up something, check FB, find an address, all the silly routine things that I don't want to haul out the laptop for or boot up the desktop. I use my phone for internet more than my desktop or laptop, so it stands to reason that I'll like the phone-on-steroids version to surf on the couch and pull up recipes in the kitchen and so on and so on.

And if nothing else, the spouse will be happier about having GIANT ANGRY BIRDS. heh.

By the way, Overdrive works fine on the Tab. Not that it wouldn't, being 2.2, but sadly it does NOT work on my Transformer with HC, or at least I haven't found a way (it doesn't open the Overdrive app for authorization when I click download in the library page).

Well that's a relief. It didn't occur to me that it might not work on the TAB since it works on my phone so nicely.

I'm sorry you can't get that to work for you. Honestly, with my reading habits I think Overdrive has saved me the purchase price of the Epic with all the books I've borrowed instead of bought. I read about two books a week minimum, plus documentation and professional reading on top of that. I was originally going to just buy a Nook Color and hack it, but this seemed simpler.

Just bought one after thinking about it ever since it was posted.

My ideal tablet was 7", and I don't seem to find a better deal--

No new 7" android tablets in the horizon,

and the price is right.

I have been looking at the various pads for awhile. The iPads are just too big for mobile use in the car and carrying all the time.

This form factor looks like it should be about the right size. I'm in for 1. I'll give the tablets a try for this price.

If I like it, I'll probably get another one when the smaller Honeycomb tablets are released.

Ohh and before I forget, if you pay Tax at woot use the coupon code - TAXSUCKS. They will give you a $5 discount (the shipping cost)

Well, you're welcome to your opinion, but having owned the original iPad, Galaxy Tab, and a Xoom I can say that Galaxy Tab gets the most use.

7" is really a perfect size for a lot of people, and the screen on the Galaxy Tab is fantastic.

Im in Korea currently. many of these phone places offer 24 month contracts also unfortunately.

Could I get 3g to work in Korea off that phone with a Korean company?

Also you think i can find someone to rig this phone to where I can make calls since Im in another country?

Tabs and phones here are all at least 2 year contracts, and they are not eager to let Americans have them on anything less. lol

Was going to buy the Nook Color this weekend because I wanted a low-end tablet, but saw this for $10 more and thought what the heck.

Hopefully Pandora has an app for it. That would get a lot of use!

Well the 10.1 inch android 3.0 version of the Galaxy Tab is coming out early june, so rumor has. So they're probably dumping current stock.

It's still quite a capable tablet - and a 7 inch one, while the new Galaxy Tab is going to be 8.9 or 10.1 inch. $250 is a really good price for this, even if the new model is almost here.
