got mine today out in CA. like many others, mine is a 1.2-branch 4349 machine.

i immediately went to work to see what options were for 1.2 roms and found roebeet's great post here.

one thing that bothers me with the 1.2 branch is that there is not a single Gingerbread (2.3) rom available at all right now... and while I'm sure BoS is a great Honeycomb build, I'm not too inclined to go with alpha code at this time (been there done that on my phone).

i did install Brilliant Corners to test it out, but it's 2.2 so it lacks a few of the things i wanted to check out in 2.3 (like the new cut/paste functionality).

most likely, I'm going to go ahead and downgrade to the 1.1 branch and try out some of the various Gingerbread builds (CM7, VeganTAB-GingerEdition, etc.) and see how they play.

when BoS exits alpha stage, i'll get right back and give it a go!

edit: whoops... found the reference thread for some Gingerbread-based ROMs adapted for the 1.2 bootloader. woot!

Yes to both. I'm still tweaking it as I'm getting some user feedback on some app issues.

Yep, that was just this week! I need to update my post to reflect that. CM7 on 1.2 -- no need to go to 1.1 anymore, imo. Good news.

This is a defect of my particular device, right?

I was set to flash it with Brilliant Corners as soon as it was fully charged. I did all my research and got all my files -- really looking forward to making it great. So, should I exchange it for a replacement right away (is this a typical problem?), or should I try to flash it and see if it helps?

Let it charge for at least 12 hours, as it does take a long time to charge that first time. Then I would leave it on stock just to watch the battery. If the battery dies quickly, then you probably have a lemon.

I don't think mine is a new device. Once the battery fully charged, I did a factory reset. Before reset, home screen was Classic, there were 3 rows of app icons on the main panel, Pandora was installed, and there was live wallpaper. After the factory reset, I got the "Welcome / Set up your G Tablet" run through, and the Portlet home screen. Switching to Classic, there was a beach still wallpaper and the main panel was all cleaned up. Also, there were no protective films on the device upon unboxing.

As for the battery (after factory reset), the device shut off WHILE I WAS USING IT. At a bit under 90%. A lemon!

And it didn't even take 4 hours to fully charge the first time. I was playing with the tablet the first 0% to 20%, and it charged pretty fast with the screen on during that time, nevermind the remainder of the time.

Thanks, roebeet!!

Now, my question is will I void any warranties if I flash it (and eventually return it to stock...using roebeet's 1.2-4349 NVFlash?) before I exchange it? Are there any recovery logs I should delete if I do so? This would be a good opportunity to practice NVFlash and all the other stuff. I'm new to modding.

funny you mention this... i don't think my unit is new either... i didn't have the intro screens when i first powered it up... screens i saw only when i had to nvflash back to stock after some roms-gone-wrong... ;)

as an aside... for anyone who might want a screen protector, these were recommended to me... sound pretty good for the anti-glare coating option.

Although I'm sure the vendor knows all about these mods, best not to tempt them if the device is RMA'd with a mod on it. With that in mind, learn nvflash, mod it, and if it still deels like something is wrong, I would do this prior to returning it:

- delete everything in /sdcard (that the drive that mounts to your PC)
- nvflash it to 4349 (since it's what it came with)
- go into recovery and wipe your user data

That should make it "pristine" with no logs or user files on it. Alternatively, if you don't want to use nvflash, you can also flash 439 via the update.zip process - either would work.

I received my g-tab on Sat. Played around with it for a couple of days and after reading some of the posts here I decided to upgrade to BRILIANT CORNERS 1.2.0 and the supplment 1.2.1. It went well an and easy. Ithen loaded some movies (avi) on the 32gb external SD card. They played ok. Then
the movies just disappeared off the 32gb SD card. I then tried a 4gb card I had and the same thing happened. I then tried it with the movies loaded on the internal SD card. And it works. The movie files did not disappear.

I had 23 movies on the 32gb SD card and they all disappeared even though I only tested a couple. I tried a couple and then powered the g-tab up and down a couple of times and then I tried to play a movie it said no videos found. I then looked in the video folder on the external SD card and the folder was empty. But it works just fine with the movies loaded in the video folder on the internal SD card.

What am I to do. I can't carry all my movies I want on a trip. Not enough room on the internal SD card.............

Update on my device: I plugged it in, put it to sleep, and it had shut itself off by 2 minutes later. OK. Then, I let it charge overnight. In the morning, I left it in sleep and went to work. When I returned 9 hours later, the device was off and the battery level was 75% when I turned it on again. I had already installed Advanced Task Killer and set it to kill every 30 minutes. So, my device stayed in sleep long enough to dwindle to 75% (with an app killer on) before shutting itself off for no reason. Something is wrong with this device!!!!

Unhappy wooter

Also, my charger makes a hissing sound. And it keeps hissing for 10 seconds after I unplug it from the outlet.

@roebeet - ps - It took me many re-readings and outside searching of links and terms (like "reboot to recovery" = Power+VolumeUp) to get to a place where I think I understand how to flash the ROM. I have some suggestions that would make it more hitchhiker-friendly (hitchhiker = n 0 0 b). Such as this much-more-current link of yours instead of the xda link to NVFlash in your recommended pre-reqs: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/17150-recovery-nvflash-full-restore-using-either-11-or-12-based-images-g-tablet/ And some places where this NVFlash tutorial seems to run Linux into Windows instructions. And that confusing part in Post-NVFlash: "OTA 3588" -- take this out or clarify that it's for 1.1 only. Stuff like this drives the newbie mind crazy.

Again, thanks for everything!

I called the manufacturer's warranty support number. It's a toll number (310 area code) for an unprofessional third party operation. The line rang at least 5 times, then a woman answered the phone just a "Hello?". When I asked whether the number was for warranty support, she routed me to an individual's voicemail. I couldn't understand the man's greeting through the accent (don't get me wrong -- I love accents, especially thick Spanish ones like this one was) and had no idea whether this was the right person for "warranty support."

I am abandoning the "manufacturer" route.

Instead, I have just now requested a woot RMA. Let's see what happens :/

Got one for the wife. I installed VEGAn-tab Ginger Edition and so far so good. Note that I had to use nvflash to downgrade to 1.1 before installing vegan GE. Thanks to robeet, gojimi, and all the other folks who made this happen!

The web browser on this thing is great. Almost like a regular PC.

Dizzy. A sexy Texas-accented service rep from woot responded within half an hour of my RMA request and slipped me a prepaid FedEx return label because my device was DOA. Refund upon return. Yayz!

I wonder if these people are crazy enough to send it back to me in my Basket Of Cuddleecyoots (Ai gotted wun!!). They're certainly a playful bunch...

Just unboxed mine today. I don't think it was a new machine--was it supposed to be? It already had Pandora and the Kindle app installed, but I couldn't get the Kindle app to accept my account information. Finally I reset it to factory settings, installed Kindle app, and it's been fine since then.

Many of the ROMs have this issue - the scanning process sometimes wipes the videos on the microSD card (also music is affected).

The band-aid fix is to drop a file called ".nomedia" on the root of the folder where your content resides (you need the period, keep in mind). This tells Android to NOT scan that folder and all subfolders. The problem is that any database-based app will not see the content anymore.

For videos, I just run them manually via a file manager anyway, so that's not a big issue. Music could be an annoyance since a lot of people use the stock music app.

Documentation, although I'm not too bad at it, is an art in itself. I actually mentioned to the XDA moderators a while back, when the first Woot! sale occurred, that I felt we really needed someone dedicated to a Wiki or FAQ (that suggestion didn't go over too well).

After this last sale however, a user in XDA called "goointentions" actually created a separate site for new users, and I think it's been very helpful. That site is here: http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/

I just bought this tablet. Charged it. Fired it up. It does not work! I had an internet connection for about five minutes. None of the apps I downloaded worked. Not a single one. Now, every time I try to connect to my wi-fi I just get an error message. W T F?! I will be returning this p o s. If Woot does not support me? I will NEVER use it again!

I have been running Brilliant Corners 1.2.1 for a few days now, and thanks to Roebeet Ive fixed the disappearing media files on the sdcard2. I've installed CPU MASTER and set to overclock at 14000. It runs good after testing my applications. I ran the benchmark program associated wit it an received a score of 4446 at 1400, and 3318 at 1000. It seems that the overclocking is working so far. Don't know about the battery life. I will have to wait and watch to check battery life.

So I just wanted to get my two cents in (while typing on my upside down gtab) that the screen viewing angle IS a pain especially if you want to set it in your lap or on a table to type. The funny thing is the simplicity of the solution, since the poor angle is due to the bias of the reflected light off the LCD, the screen is perfectly clear when viewed from the top down. Since current versions of android will flip to any direction, all you have to do is flip the gtab upside down, once the tab corrects itself you can lay it flat on your lap with no view issues... and the great side effect is, if it is on the table at a coffee shop you have relative privacy from the person across the table.

Hope this little observation helps some of you to find new uses for your gtabs.

Woot forgot to mention that the TWO tablets i purchased came would be coming with another users gmail account attached to it. Along with Frostwire and some of the users other personal information (I was kind and emailed them). These were definitely NOT "new" as stated and while they might have come refurbished from Viewsonic I purchased it from Woot so it becomes their issue. Point bank....it's false advertising. Woot's simple answer (in a 5 word sentence) was to RMA them. Thats a little hard to do when they were shipped off to teenagers as gifts. Rooting them is not that easy when they were botched to begin with. BUYER BEWARE TO ALL THE NON TECHNICAL FOLKS. You better be ready to call in an IT person to help you fix them out of the box!

I'll stick to Amazon and pass the word on. All it takes is one person to reach a million! Thanks for your lack of help Woot!

FYI to any future buyers. These are NOT new items. They are partial refurbs, meaning that they got a new box and shrink wrap from factory. Your unit may or may not have already been rooted. If so you may have to utilize NVFLASH to bring yours back to 1.1 from 1.2.

Bottom line here is that unless you are an Android user / hacker DO NOT purchase these from woot. Most folks I know have had major issues thus far.

If you are an Android power user and know your way around rooting , flashing, romming, etc... Go for it! These are kick ass machines if you know what you are doing

i'm not sure if anyone still reads this thread, but i figured i'd do a follow up about my RMA experience.

so after the (shady) call i mentioned earlier, i reluctantly mailed US-Merchants back the tablet with a short description of what was wrong (2 lines of dead pixels) with the tablet.

over the next week or so, i'd email the contact at US-Merchants asking for updates on the RMA once i saw that UPS delivered the tablet. the first was 2-3 days after the confirmed delivery and the contact wrote back that the tablet wasn't found in the system yet.

i started to get nervous but still played along, keeping in mind that they say the RMA process can take up to 2 weeks.

8 days later, i email again and am told that the tablet was actually mailed back to me several days earlier.

fast forward to yesterday i get my g-tab back with 0 dead pixels running fine. half an hour later i'm running Bottle of Smoke alpha 0.6 on it, and i couldn't be happier!

it goes to show despite the whole suspect RMA process, they actually did pull through in the end.

i'm not a big fan of capitalization.

Hello All,
I need a little help here. I Need to know-how to boot up in CWM mode. I am rooted to Brilliant Corners 1.3.1, which already has CWM 3028 built-in. But when try to boot up into recovery it does not stop at CWM but continues to boot all the way to BL1.3.1.
Do I have to remove the update.zip and Recovery folder first? And then try to boot into CWM recovery.

And secondly if I want to repartition to 2048mb, after I set the partition paramiters to 2048 and 0, do I use the back key and then continue to reboot system? If so, will it boot up inti BC1.3.1? And then all I have to do is run Titanium Backup to get all my apps back?

Thanks in advance.
