I also purchased this TV and have been very satisfied. The picture looks great and it has surprisingly good sound quality.

Hunted down the Silo website...discovered Silo has been in business since 2004.

I watch TV maybe once a week...do you think I will I be happy with this TV?

Here is their Warranty Website, it is not the same as the company website posted previously and the 'about us' on the main page is basically written in Engrish! I'd be VERY VERY concerned about the chances of favorable outcome if I had to claim warranty on this set...

Someone posted other comparably priced sets earlier from much more reputable companies. If I were going to buy a budget set like this one I would go with one of those instead...

If you do buy it you MUST register the TV on that website within 60 days of purchase in order to get the 1 year warranty.

I can't find the actual weight but it is likely over 40lbs since the shipping weight is 50.5lbs! Take this into consideration if you are replacing a 32" set and already have a wall mount you want to use (make sure the mount can handle the weight.)

Compare to this 42" Vizio that is only 42lbs shipping weight (32.8lbs actual) or this 42" same priced Westinghouse that is 46.5lbs (shipping weight) and 34.4lbs total. This Silo is probably using older bulkier components.

And while I'm talking about wall mounts, buy yours from monoprice.com and you can be assured you are getting a good deal.

Hm. As I am currently down one 32" TV, I am actually tempted by this.

I'd be more tempted if I knew it had S-Video (it doesn't) and supported PiP/PnP/POP/Picture-in-Picture (like watching TV on one half and playing solitaire on the other) like my dead one (a second-wave ViewSonic LCD that had a 4% overscan issue).

There needs to be a better way of shopping for these things.

For 4 bills I'm in for one, the kids can move the PlayStation off my V series Panny plasma and it'll be much appreciated.

These Silo televisions were up before and frankly, they are decent for the price.

Heck, maybe I'm in for two . . .

Silo has final assembly and QC in the US if I understand correctly from information in previous woot!'s . . . the actual components are assuredly not manufactured in the US.

The final product is "product of the USA".

Silo website states there LCDs are assembled and tested in USA. Kinda nice to know that.

Seriously? There is no single standard by which contrast ratios are measured, so comparing the listed contrast ratio across brands is like comparing dress sizes across brands: you can't gain any really useful information without examining the product itself.

Now, if Silo made three models of TV and they had three different listed contrast ratios it is possible (just possible, not 100% guaranteed) that all three were measured in the same way, so a comparison of their contrast ratio numbers would yield a relative judgment of their picture quality. But that is only because all three were made (and presumably assigned a contrast ratio number) by the same company.

They screw the bases on the TVs here and test them by making sure they don't tip over. These are as Chinese as chow mein.

Okay, so I read the 60 vs 120 HZ article, but it does not answer my question - which is better for watching sports? (Football, specifically, assuming those dumbasses get it together and we have a season this year...)

Got one of these when it was up on Woot around the New Year. I'm not especially picky about my TV, so have been pretty happy with the thing.
True, nobody has heard of the brand -- not even the people who write the lists of remote codes. This means trial and error to set up TV control on the remotes for your other devices. I remember the remote code for this TV being listed under a much better known brand (Westinghouse or someone like that) but I don't recall exactly which brand it was. Annoyingly, changing the input on the TV doesn't just cycle with a single button push so you need to revert back to the original remote for that.
I do get occasional flickers on this and sometimes the HDMI doesn't handshake properly, but I don't know if these are due to the TV or my receiver.

Silo used to be a large nationwide electronics store chain.

Guess they decided to make TVs instead of selling them!

Ok, there may be no industry standard, BUT
I would really love to see more TV's on WOOT!
with across the board good ratings that are NOT large enough, if the war with the machines comes, (I'm just saying!) to swallow a Great Dane. Maybe a Beagle. How about more TV's in the 32" range, I could possibly take that down. And fit it into my living room. And local teens may not even feel a need to worship it, one they don't understand- yet. A refresh rate higher than my laptop would be good too....

I bought one back then. A few days later Woot contacted me saying they can't sell it to me because there's a claim between the manufacturer in Asia, and the brand company in California, and there was a restraining order on selling Silo TV's.

Woot ended up offering me a sweet Western Digital (42" LED LCD, 120Hz) tv for the same price.

Since most of those numbers are made up anyway, it's hard to know what that will mean in real life use. I know that I have "50,000:1" TN panel sitting here as my 2nd monitor and its contrast is no where near as nice as a much more expensive IPS panel that is rated at 600:1. Those contrast ratios are about as close to meaningless as you can get and still supply a number.

Those numbers are absolutely meaningless. I have a very nice IPS panel that is rated at 600:1 that I'd put up against anything on the shelf with those insane "SIXTY BAJILLION TO ONE!!!" contrast ratios. I'm more trusting of low numbers as being representative of something than the insane "dynamic contrast ratios" or something like that.

If it makes you feel better, you could just slap another zero on the end of this TV's rated contrast ratio (or subtract one, really) and it would be just as meaningless relative to any other panel.

We had a 100' silo growing up.
I always wanted to climb to the top of it, but I never did.
Shot some pigeons out of it.
That was fun.

Looks like this is a TV.

Unless you live at over 6,000 feet of elevation or so. Plasma is no good at higher altitudes.

Not a great deal considering how cheap you can get a tv these days. Don't buy it just because it says 1080p 42" LCD for $400. It's really not a great tv.

theguruguys wrote:Here is a decent article explaining 60hz vs 120hz.

It is debatable as to which is better 60hz with good 3:2 pulldown or 120hz. Some people hate watching 24fps material (movies) on 120hz because it caused them to look fake. Most better TV's will have the option to turn 120hz off and give you a choice. Remember, this is a 'budget' TV that I would assume most people are using for a second room, not for primary viewing.

No offense, but this is way off.

This is a very important number actually, so simply dismissing it is silly. Contrast ratio is the range of difference in luminous intensity between white (brightest) and black (darkest) which it is capable of producing. So, yes, this is very important to consider.
