Any chance for an image with the cover removed?

Also, how much does a entry level imager run?

This is with the cover on, and hard drive installed. I'll snap another with the cover off.

Entry level camera is about 1500, but it's crap. This image was shot with a 320 res camera worth about $7500.

Anyone have luck with motion detection alarms to email? I set up my smtp through my junk gmail account. The test function through the DVR sent an email to my non-junk account so that all is fine. I've got the motion areas set up (red = detect as mentioned in prior posts). I also bumped the sensitivity all the way to 8 trying to get it to alarm. No "M" ever shows on the screens and no email ever shows. The only thing I can think of is that I don't have a hard drive installed yet. Don't know why this would be a hard drive specific function (unless its trying to email the footage).

Otherwise, I'm very pleased with this system vs price. I ran cables through my attic yesterday and have all 4 cameras installed and viewable via internet or android. It was amusing to watch my dog at home during the day while I was testing the setup. I always wondered what she did and now I know (sleep).

Finally, has anyone considered replacement cameras? I was considering getting one camera to replace over my front door so that I could get better resolution. Any suggestions without breaking the bank?

I thought 1 was the most sensitive.

I got my cameras in place, but scared to drill any holes in my house. I hope to do the drilling today.

Here is a thermograph side by side with the case open. The DVR had been running for about 15 hours like this, and the ambient air temperature in the room was 79.3. I have the unit recording everything but channel 4, so it's working hard.

I would say that the email/motion detect problems may first be the fact that you do not have a HDD installed yet. The system logs the event when you have a motion detect alarm. It wants to indicate it in the log and make the "recording" available. In your case you do not have any way to store the recording.

My ISP does not allow communications with any SMTP server other that the local ISP SMTP server (not even my own). So I have to send it to the email assigned to me for the ISP and the forward to GMAIL from there. I have yet to set it up as I do not have all the cabling needed to set my cameras up as well I want to make sure that everything from end to end is on a UPS (cable modem, Wireless router, DVR and Cameras).

I have been playing with the motion settings and camera image settings and I am really happy with the results. I did not know that bugs could see in the IR wavelengths. The amount of bugs at night plays havoc with the motion detection settings.

Also it is too bad there was not a "Lightning Algorithm" so as to not cause a detect every time it flashes. It is SO COOL to watch in frame by frame though.

Can anyone post a copy of the email that would be received?

I am looking for any variables for filtering and forwarding through GMAIL

You can access the menu setup by pressing and holding down the "Rewind" button on the front of the DVR. Hold until it beeps to bring up the mouse cursor...or just press the "0" key on the remote control to bring up the same menu.

Now to get this setup for remote viewing via iPhone. I know ASee+ is the recommended app, but there seems to be too many ports involved for remote viewing. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

ASee & ASee+ both work, depending on your viewing preferences.

The system has the Media port set to 18004 by default. This port (or any new one you change it to) needs to be forwarded, and you need to specify the password to be used for accessing the device remotely.

According to the manual, 8 was the most sensitive. I tried all the settings, though. HDD (500GB WD Black @ Amazon for $59.99) is on the way so I have a feeling that will do the trick to allow it to motion detect. I'll try to let everyone know how it goes.

They are cheap and rated well. They are not yet in my possession, but if this thread is still alive when I have done the install I will provide an update on how well they actually work.

FWIW, Amazon also has terrific deals on CCTV cables. For me, 60ft was not enough to do the install. With the addition of the microphones I needed to run audio cables to the PVR also.

Ended up getting one of these:

I just got done talking with Customer Service from Zmodo and I was blown away by their support. I had a camera that was DOA and I thought it would be a royal pain to get it replaced. Instead I ran in to the exact opposite situation. The customer service rep was attentive and helped me get a replacement sent out the same day. I wish all companies were like this.

I also asked about their cheapest pan tilt outdoor camera and he showed me the CM-T1001BG. The problem is I can't find a single review anywhere on the internet. It has a sony 1/3" ccd sensor so I would assume it would be better than the stock cameras that came with the unit. Does anyone know anything about it? If I look at a camera with a similar sensor would that be a good gauge of image quality?

The 3 that I ordered arrived, but they all have problems with the BNC video connectors on the back of the DVR. If you move the cable, the video is unstable and sometimes cuts out completely. Very disappointed because I need to rely that I can set these up 1700 miles away and not have to worry about it.

Got a drive installed yesterday, set up the motion detection, set the recorder to chop into max 15 minute intervals, and the sensitivity to 1 (lowest) but it is frequently recording entire 15 minute chunks with no activity that should trigger the motion detection. I have also set the detection zones up to minimize false triggers from leaves etc. No real big deal as I have a 1 TB drive and it will store plenty and overwrite as needed.
A note, you get the red R in any camera view that has recording enabled, it will change to M when the motion detection is triggered.
I do believe we will be looking for better cameras. My front door camera is in the window about 8 feet to the side and you really can't make out faces well enough at night to be used to ID someone. The real value in this system is the DVR. Quite pleased overall though.

I have had mine set up to record "always" on each channel. I had also set up 3 of the 4 with "motion detect" set to "enable". I have been getting 15 minute recordings from each camera plus a 1 minute "alarm" recording whenever there is motion on either of those 3. When you posted this, I was just thinking that you could take the record mode off of "always" and just let them record when there is motion. I tried it to see if it worked (by changing "always" to "scheduled") and it didn't record anything at all. I got looking at the schedule setup and there is a grid with blocks corresponding to each hour in the week. At first I thought that I could just toggle them on or off in the same fashion as the grid setup for "area". Well I started getting frustrated at first because I could change them to green but could not change them back to white. Then I realized there are 3 check blocks above the grid. Whichever block is checked when you click on one of the blocks in the grid,("alarm", "normal", or "no record"), that's the color the block will change to. It's red for "alarm", green for "normal", and white for "no record".

So in theory you could set up a camera to record continuously for certain hours and the switch to motion ("alarm") for other hours and completely stop recording the rest of the time. Anyway just to see what I could do with that, I set up one camera to record continuously and the others to record on motion only.

For the one camera that records continuously I set the "motion detect" to "disable" under the Device Motion settings and in the record setup I set it to "schedule" and then selected all the blocks to green ("normal") in the schedule grid. On the other channels I selected "motion detect" to "enable" and then set all of the blocks to red ("alarm") in the schedule grid. Now the one camera records all the time and the others only record when there is motion. I found it a tad confusing at first but it is cool that you can have this much control over what is recorded.

Also, just a note... If you set up "schedule" for any one camera, all the channels switch to schedule also so you will have to set the schedule grid for each channel (you can copy settings from one channel to another though).

Hope that helps...

This is a stand alone DVR that uses a monitor or tv with a composite input to display it's video. You can also view the video on a computer through a network or through the internet or on a mobile device through the internet as well.

I am not sure what you mean when you say that the computer will not recognize the DVR. Other than through a network, the computer and the DVR shouldn't be connected together. The VGA cable should go from the DVR to the monitor. If you get no video on the monitor try holding down the zero or rewind button on the remote for a couple of seconds and see if that helps.

Either connect a TV with a composite input to the output BNC connector with the proper cable and/or adapter or connect the VGA connector of a computer monitor to the VGA connector of the DVR. Do not connect the VGA cable from the DVR to your computer...

Got mine a week ago, then left for vacation.

Thanks to all who have posted, you got me over the terrible user manual and kept me from trashing the unit.

Before getting to the setup issues had other Q/C problems. Power supply for cameras was DOA, but one of my junk box wall warts took care of that. Power and video cables are flakey, can jiggle connections into and out of being. Those having camera problems might want to check this.

Overall happy with system. Local elx store sells comparable unit for $400, so can't expect perfection.

Motion Detection Follow Up

Got my HDD installed and motion detection is working. My system seems extremely sensitive. I have all channels turned down to 1 (lowest) and have been reducing the amount of MD area. I received a few hundred emails from my system in the last 24 hours. Way too many to be useful. I have now reduced my MD areas to almost nothing (only critical areas) and also set my email interval to 5 min in the email options. This seems to have slowed it down substantially. Seems like shadows, bugs, birds all trigger the MD even at lowest sensitivity. A spider web and wind played havoc on one camera last night. Hopefully I will be good now. Overall, a very good system for the $.

FYI, I installed ferrite cores (monoprice) on both ends of the video cable but little to no noticeable enhancement. Guess my system wasn't too terribly noisy to begin with. Was hoping I'd get a little better resolution.

Not certain about ASee/Asee+, but IP Cam Viewer Lite calls for you to use a separate 'camera' for each of the camera channels. Settings all the same but the camera#.

Big thanks to those of you who've posted what works! I've had my limited router skills stretched to the absolute max. Also had to set & reset the port forwarding in the modem 3 times before it would actually open the ports (dlink dir615), but it finally 'took'. Now have access at work & Android.

Yeah.... I finally set my dvr to not record motion at night, since the moths keep trying to be friends with the camera... only set one key camera to record continuously through the night.

I found that using motion activated recording during the day was only useful if you point the camera an entrance where direct sunlight is rare, since shadow movement looks the same as a person walking through the field of view. I have many large trees around my house, and I found that the camera covering my garage and driveway was recording every time a breeze shifted the trees.

Just curious did anyone set the DVR to record constantly instead of motion? This would seem the best to me for many reasons, just don't want to miss anything. I'm just wondering how accurate the recording time is I have the 500Gb WD black drive and I have mine to to overwrite every 7 days that seems like a good enough time to find out if anything had happened in that time frame. Just wondering if anyone else has theirs set like this?

I finally got ours to work with the iPhones (3&4)...the version of ASEE that you download from the apple iphone app store is v1.01 and it doesn't seem to work.

If you log onto the iTunes store directly from your PC, and download ASEE from there you will get v1.2.3 which seems to work just fine.

Delete ASEE 1.01 from your iPhone. Then connect up to iTunes...it should sync the ASEE v1.2.3 app to your phone. Enter the necessary info, ip addr, port, login, PW, etc. and it should work fine.
:-)
