Right. So, if you buy 3, you'd effectively get two "regular" 216-piece sets of each color, if you've got other packs already and want to keep things equal.

I'm broke until payday, so I'll have to hope this shows up in the next wootoff. I've got chrome/silver/gold/black/green already.

ONE OF THESE DAYS, I'M GOING TO CUT YOU INTO LITTLE PIECES.

Oh, these guys at Woot. I can't believe they put that in there, and at this point there are about 30 comments, and No One said anything. Hmm, maybe I am just crass enough to bring it up?

Creative placement of the packaging spells "icky" in place of "bucky". Purposeful?

the set of 'gold' Buckyballs bought from woot, became silver within 2-3 days.

green set, had thicker and uneven coating, but weaker magnets. coating mostly stays because those are not fun to play with

The picture shows sets of 125 red, white and blue balls, the description says 144...oh, wait there's another 19 off to the side.

Nevermind.

The last time they had buckyballs outside a woot off (green BB-->http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=4389160) they were also "limited edition." You know, I think this "limited edition" thing is just a marketing ploy to get us to buy these.

The pictures show a cube with a side of 5. The original is a cube with a side of 6. There is no cube which has 144 balls. I think the sets on sale have only 125 balls per set.

The normal set of 216 costs about $30, so they are about 14 cents a piece. With this deal, you get 432 for about $35, which is only 8 cents a piece. What a deal!

Unless you buy them from Woot. The last time I got them here it was 2 x 216 (432) for $30, this is the same number of magnets for $5 more... hardly a deal, even when compared to Woot's own site.

Sykotek: Just wait till you're watching TV, and start idly fiddling around with these. If you're like me, and many others, pretty soon you'll find them addictive. Just a little while after you think you've made the last possible shape with them, you'll find one more.

You have to have enough of them, though. I have 2 x 216 = 432, and that was just enough, one set wouldn't have done it for me. Here, three 5x5 sets plus the spares adds up to the same 432, so you'll probably be happy with one bunch, but if you have the money, go for more. You won't regret it.

I currently have zero income, but in for 2 anyway. What the hell, might as well have a little fun before I start living on the street.

I have retired a few magnets after wearing off the outer cover (silver ones, not colored) (the insides of all NIB magnets are sintered), but they held up pretty well against 5 months of almost daily use. Unsure how the colors will hold up, these will be my first colored ones.

Hmmm...I'd say there is some tomfoolery afoot in your household. My Bucky Balls don't slide down the fridge...the kiddos even stand 5 - 6 feet away and throw them at the fridge and they hold fast.

What a wonderful use of the rare earth (lanthanide) Neodymium, which — alloyed with other metals like iron — makes the strongest permanent ferromagnets known. We should have fun with our technology! Since China has an embargo on export of bulk rare earth metals, we have to buy them as finished electronic products, or ... TA TA! BuckyBalls.

For those of you have bought Buckyballs before, each color in this Woot offer is smaller than the 6 cubed = 216 than you are used to. Each color is a 5 sided cube with an extra 19 added, so you can't even make a 6X5X5 solid. But even if you only buy one unit of 432 magnets each Buckyball will only cost you 9.3¢, which is about right, metallurgically speaking. Which raises the concept of a dime made with Nd...

A question for color-blind users... can you tell the colors apart by darkness?

NOT for households with children under 14.

I would add households where kids visit because it's hard to find the stray ones under the couch or remember to put them away.

If you have them in an office or you are a confirmed bachelor with out any kids who visit - go nuts - they can be fun.

However, for those with kids. There have been several hospitalizations and a death resulting from the kind of rare earth magnets in this product. Young children put strong magnets in their mouths and older children sometimes will pretend to have jewelry or screw around with them and inhale or also ingest them. These kind of magnets don't necessarily pass through because they are strong enough to adhere to each other and cause holes, infections, blockages.

Strong magnets like these are CPSC #1 hidden home hazard.

cindihoward wrote:Will bucky stick to the fridge door?

For what it's worth, I've tried sticking my set to my fridge, and it works. Possibly too well. It's difficult to get mine OFF of my fridge after they're stuck on (you have to either peel them off one string at a time or slide them to an edge). I don't know if my fridge is just more ferromagnetic than some of the other people who have said that they roll, or what, but in my experience, they should stick quite firmly.

CAUTION: Be very careful putting buckyballs on your fridge, as they can quite easily scratch the finish (on both the fridge and the balls) if you slide them at all; I found this out the hard way.

Yes, if you stick them in a clump, then they stay on your fridge nicely. You can even do some interesting abstract art while maintaining the prominence of your grocery list. I currently have a organic tree sculpture of bucky's stuck to my fridge, but I've also had interesting basket shapes and geometric patterns. (or just a plain lump).

For those of you who are worried about the 144 piece set, I think these will be neat. For example, you can make them into 6x6x4 and put the sets together to make a cool red white and blue bar pattern. Also, the standard hex pattern which consists of 18 buckies will allow for you to make 8 of each color, and you can make designs as you will. I have two sets of bucky balls now, and I usually keep them in six stacks of four 18-bucky hexes, and I like the idea of them being red white and blue. So, don't fear the mismatch, unless you really are neurotic about single color cubes.

Arrghhh...

Do I need these? No
Should I buy them? No

I should save my money.. tuition isn't cheap and every little bit helps.

Will I buy them? Yes

Sometimes I worry about myself.

Guess this will add 432 to my collection of 2 greens and 2 regulars, that's 864.. so I'll end up with 1,296 Buckyballs and a book.

I have an illness. D:
