The Ionic filter models were slapped by the EPA years ago for putting out harmful levels of ozone. The ones that put out small amounts are pretty beningn unless you're running this on high 24/7 for weeks in a sealed room before walking into it to breathe...

Mostly Ozone is used to remove or mask odors.

Consumer reports:
Sanyo Air Washer ABC-VW24A
MSRP: $250
Tested
Total Score: 44 (out of 100)
Highest Rated Model: 74
Lowest Rated Model: 20

Dust/pollen/smoke removal (high): Dust/pollen/smoke removal is how well a model cleared air of fine clay dust and cigarette smoke when operating at its highest speed. A model that scores well for dust removal should perform comparably for pollen.

Rated Good on high, Poor on low
Noise Fair on high, Excellent on low
Annual cost in energy is 42 and filter 18

However, @ $99, they would probably rate it higher. Their top two models and picks are $300 & $260 with filters costing much higher. Also, having had a cat and having allergies, I don't personally agree IMVHO that clay dust disperses like pollen or dust mite debris. Just my .02 & why I'm in for 2.

It does nothing. It is neither a humidifier or dehumidifier, it's a filter.

Sanyo suggests replacing the filter every 4 years. It sells for 70 bucks in the US:

Consumer Reports rates it "good" with a score of 44. It rated poor at the low speed level for dust/pollen/smoke, and good at the highest speed. The annual energy cost is 42, and the annual filter cost is 18. On noise, it rated fair at high speed, and excellent at low speed.

Overall seems like a pass. HOWEVER, I'm tempted because I like the idea of a humidifier/air purifier. I live in the desert of Arizona.

Thank you for your "VHO," I kinda agree with you. This seems to be a great product. My air filter is kinda slowly dying. And, I hate having to give it up when I have guests; my mom always needs it-- but, dang, I do too!

The amount of water it puts into the air is less than you breathing for a few minutes... not an acceptable replacement for a humidifier.

I have an ionic air purifier. I have asthma. It doesn't bother it. It may bother someone as far as smell. It sorta leaves a smell -- faint chlorine-like. I use it in the kidling's room during the day (remove it before she gets home from school .... sneaky). She can't smell it because her room has teenager stink to it.

That chlorine oder you smell is ozone. It is breaking up into O2 and O and the O is destroying your lung cells.

I don't know where you are seeing reviews that makes the HB rated better.

I found that the Holmes HAP756-U was the least expensive and best rated by Consumer Reports.

CR said it was $150, I found a deal for it to be $97 + tax.

Sandy106 wrote:400 square feet each? So I'd need 20 of these to cover my house?

How do these compare to Oreck filters and the Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image?

Simple. The Ionic Breeze does NOT work. It has been tested by third parties and has been shown to not clean the air much at all. HEPA is the way to go. Even in cleanroom for semiconductor processing, we use HEPA (but more sophisticated, of course) filters. We use ionic TRAPS but not like those little things inside an ionic breeze. In fact, there was even a lawsuit against Sharper Image.

The Sharp air purifier, this and all of their other purifiers are some of the best around the world. They are not only powerful, they are whisper quiet. I have four, one in my bedroom (yes, no sound at all), one in my office, two in my studios.

The entire unit costs $100. If the filter costs $70 then the rest of it is only worth 30 bucks.
Sell it to me for 30 bucks and I'll make my own filter. OK plus $5 for shipping!!

I have one of these. I got it to review and I simply love it. Easy to maintain and does a great job keeping down the dust from woodstoves and pets. The filter just needs vacuuming occasionally and may eventually need to be replaced, but I haven't had it tell me to do that.

I have asthma and this works great for it.

Only downside: the water reservoir is a bit small. But beyond that, this is a heckuva deal. I think when I looked at it on Amazon, it was close to $300.

I have this filter I purchased refurb'ed from Overstock for the same price as this new unit. I've been quite obsessed with HEPA purifiers for the last 6 months. This Sanyo is quite good. I bought one for my parents and the last one on Overstock for myself. The best part of it is that the filter is rated for 4 years. I have 2 other purifiers made by Winix and the filter are suppose to last one year and at $60 a filter, that's $240 at the cost of one Sanyo filter.

I keep this on the medium level at all times and turn it up to high when the needs arise. The medium level is great for background white noise. The high is too loud but good for occasional rapid cleaning. Not sure if the Virus washer helps but I keep the tank filled whenever I stop seeing the white smoke bellow out the top.

The Winix on amazon is on sale for $150 and at that price it's a bargain. This unit kicks ass and it moves a LOT of air. Good enough for a 350 sq. ft. room. But I may purchase this as a backup since it's so cheap.

Actually, the smell really is chlorine, according to the Wikipedia article posted above (which is here. The electrolysis pulls the chlorine out of the tap water and uses it to create the disinfection property.

Another version of the Consumer Reports Rating:
The Sanyo model is the 18th from the top out of 22 portable room air purifiers tested.
On high speed it gets a 'good' rating for dust/pollen/smoke removal (equivalent to 3 out of 5).
It is by far the least expensive. Cheapest in the top 10 is Holmes HAP756 at $150.

You may feel free to push the stupidly large button.

Note: Orek Proshield Plus is rated second to last.

lll0228 wrote:The Ionic Breeze does NOT work.

Wrong.
It does work.
It just doesn't work to the same extent as fan driven purifiers.

I bought one for a friend many years ago, and he said he had to frequently clean the metal collection plates. He did show me the plates too, they were quite dirty.
Considering it had no fan, it did a damn good job.

Here is an old review (not mine) that also shows the dirt I was describing: http://www.airpurifiersadvice.com/ionic-breeze-air-purifier.htm

Also, the old complaints about Ionic breeze don't directly apply to the new models.
The old models didn't have fans, the new ones do.

I don't have any experience with the newer Ionic Breeze models, but if they are at least as good as the old ones, then they DO work.

If you're not subscribed, this air purifier did not rank highly. It got a 44 out of 100. At full speed, it'll clean the 400' w/ noise. Otherwise, did fair to poor. Not so hot on electric bills- 42:100

Not 42 out of 100. The annual energy cost to run this is $42 a year. The filter is $18 a year (or $70 filter for four years and rounded up from 17.50). Not bad.

Their top two choices are $91 & $143 for energy a year and $117 & $50 a year for filters.

The filters can be a deal killer. Often expensive and worse very hard to find. Plus CR has several times not added in the cost of a pre-filter which you end up needing to replace monthly because often vacuuming or washing can only do so much on thin screens until they fail -- the air purifiers we're using now CR failed to add pre-filters into the costs. And neither one has filters that are currently sold in stores so they all have to be ordered online or the manufacturers helpfully suggests you buy a new model. Gee thanks. Sorta reminds me of printer ink. In a bad way. >_<
