SirBlastmaster wrote:Halo is awesome, but come on, anyone that ever grew up with the Nintendo 64 the best game of all time has to be Super Mario 64.

I grew up playing N64 and while I loved Super Mario N64, I have NEVER played a game through as many times as I have OoT. That was the greatest game of all time. They need to revive that Link for the consoles. Twilight Princess was close to back on track. Luckily for me I still have my N64 and OoT so maybe when I get off of work I'll go home and play it.

Tankardofale wrote:The problem with Zelda is every game is the same - 8 dungeons, princess, Ganon, heart containers, yada yada. Give me some variety, some plot. I'll go Final Fantasy.

Yeah there are a lot of similarities between most of Zelda games (because the formula works, dangit!) but at least one notable exception?

Majora's Mask: 4 dungeons, no princess, no Ganon, ridiculous amount of side quests.

Aside from that there is something new in every game, maybe not always plot-wise (Windwaker had a pretty big plot deviation, not to mention the art style), but usually gameplay-wise. At the least it's far less homogenous than Pokemon.

To be honest, I feel that most FF plots are pretty similar too. Big evil threat to the world, crystals, same monsters, airships, some kind of summoning thing, (steam/cyber)-punk The big difference is game mechanics (but those seem to cycle a bit) and the setting. The setting mostly is the thing that changes a lot.

Personally, I think one of the benefits of most franchises is to have the same or similar setting between games. You don't need any explanation to understand what's going on with the Mushroom Kingdom or Hyrule, or why your character is the destined hero, because it's been explained already, you can then focus on other things in the game.

Final Fantasy on the other hand has a new world each time with a new history, and if you want that, great. Me? It just means I'll care less about the world and the people in it because it's unfamiliar. In effect, the stakes are higher when you're trying to save Hyrule than when you're trying to save {insert new nation here}.

Not that Final Fantasy games aren't awesome, they are, they'll just never be Zelda for me because every FF game is a new investment but every Zelda game just adds to the ongoing story.

I mean what would Harry Potter have been if it instead were seven different books about seven different, destined, magically inclined children in seven different, mystical, magical worlds just a step askance from our own mundane one? Not nearly as much to sneeze about.

A lot of you are mentioning PC games. Console and PC games are different... games on both or just for PC would not eligible.

Making the choice is difficult. How do you define best? Iconic? Profitable? Fun?

Personally for me its SOCOM, but all things considered its Mario with Zelda a close second.

bsmith1 wrote:They have the same "story", gameplay, and usually graphics every year, just with different names on the virtual jerseys. That's not really a franchise, just one really expensive game that comes on multiple discs.

No story? It's sports every game played is its own story. But there have been 'storyline' features added to ncaa and madden football games for several years now. But to dismiss a franchise that has had over 20 editions just makes you look bitter. I would agree buying ncaa football 2011 if you just bought 2010 last year is redundant. But I'll buy one about every 5 years and you do see play advancements

So 1 vote for Asteroids.

That's 2 votes. I sunk a TON of quarters on this game.

But I also love Mech Assault!

I'm in the Zelda camp, but Metal Gear has been around since NES, and it's hit every PS platform, the GameCube and is being releases for the Xbox in all it's original glory...epic saga..storyline continuing through the franchise...ok maybe I'm not as Zelda as I thoughjt :O)

can't believe Resident Evil and Sonic were on the list.

im not a big Zelda fan, but i cant believe it wasnt on the list.

This should have been the list.

Mario
Zelda
Madden
Halo
Final Fantasy

And my vote still would have remained Halo, mostly because when I was growing up we couldn't afford a NES, so we had an Atari 2600 (skipped the next one) and then got an Atari 7800. So things like Asteroids, Frogger, Xevious, etc. were the 'franchises' i played.

Mario or Final Fantasy...

I'm going to vote Final Fantasy because they have bridged accross platforms. They conquored not only console but also the PC and even broke into the MMORPH market with 11. They are still going strong.

Mario may be more recognizable but hands down the fact that they are on Cellular phone, Game Boy Advance, iOS, MSX, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo GameCube, Windows, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Wii, Wonderswan Color, Xbox 360.... FF wins this game.

My vote was with Mario because they always seemed to make it fresh. Even Sunshine wasn't all that bad of a game.

Ten years ago I would have cast my lot with FF, but they got stale since X. Would you like the push 'X' a hundred times and then watch a movie?

Zelda is up there, but as someone mentioned, they all pretty much have the same formula (though Majora's Mask broke this trend). You also have to factor in that two of the (reputedly since few people actually played them) worst video games of all time were Zelda games.

Half-life series (with Portal 1/2 thrown in) is a strong contender on the PC side. Some of those games are on consoles, but it's not primarily a console series so it doesn't count.
