What's the 802.11 speed on this model?

It is 802.11g which should be in general 100mbps.

It can stream wirelessly. But not from a DVD player. Some people have had some success streaming from a PC, I have not tried so I won't say yes or no.

I had a Roku HD-XR, and it lasted for a little over a two months (first month of that was shipping time) before it caught itself on fire and died. Dealing with their customer service was absolutely horrible. I couldn't get them to replace it without much arguing, and even then they still wanted me to pay shipping for their crappy product that lasted a little over two months. I ended up getting American Express's warranty service to refund me the cost. AmEx is awesome. Roku is not.

There are other channels you can install and watch videos from. Crackle for example.

Is that all the difference between Apple TV and Roku you think to be important? There seem to be some differences in the specs, too. I'd seriously like to know to decide which to buy, so I spent a half hour comparing what is important to me, which resulted in these feature lists:

Roku HD Wireless Media Player - $45 shipped from Woot!

  • 802.11 b and g
  • Composite, S-video, Component video, HDMI, Composite (Yellow/Red/White) Cable included
  • 5" x 5" x 1.75" (130mm x 130mm x 41mm)
  • Power 'brick'
  • Refurb, 90 day warranty

Refurb Apple TV 2 – $85.00, free shipping Apple Store link

  • 802.11a,b,g,n 2.4 & 5 ghz
  • HDMI only, cable not included
  • 3.9" x 3.9" x .9" (98mm x 98mm x 23mm)
  • Integrated power adapter
  • Refurb, 1 year warranty

Based on the 5 Ghz wireless capability alone, I'd lean toward the Apple TV. Though I like the additional video options available with the Roku, in reality, I'd only use the HDMI anyway.

Almost ordered this Roku, but I am thankful for the opportunity to compare Apples to Roku's.

Thanks

That's normal. In another month it will be back on the streaming list. They change it up all the time to make room for new stuff for people to watch. No conspiracy there.

You can use the Instant Watch Browser (Lite) channel. "The Instant Watch Browser allows you to browse the entire Netflix instant watch catalog! Browse new, expiring and upcoming releases, genres, subgenres, and related titles, or search by title actor, and director. The lite version limits genres to 100 titles and disables queue management."

They kept asking me to go through the troubleshooting steps. I thought that was especially bad since the last time I plugged it up it caught on fire! I wasn't going to plug it up again.

You can use the rocksbox channel to stream videos from a computer on your network. I use handbrake to rip my movies down, then Roku to pipe them to all the TVs. Very slick, very easy!

Can we somehow get local Maryland and D.C. PBS content (MPT and WETA respectively) and weather channel through Roku?

I see PlayOn claims to offer PBS but I'm guessing that's the national network that doesn't carry the preferred local programming.

Would love to ditch Verizon T.V. because we only watch PBS and weather on it.

I have a Roku and use a software solution called PlayOn. It is inexpensive and allows me to stream the regular version of Hulu and many other online video sites from my PC to the box. It has some minor glitches, but is well worth it in my opinion.

In for 1, I have been looking for a deal like this for my son's TV. I gave DIRECTTV the boot a few months ago and USE playon and PS3 for TV and FREE digital Local over the AIR. HDTV FREE OVER THE AIR IS GREAT for locals. CHANNELS are awesome! I think am going to go to NETFLIX streaming only with their change

THANK YOU JUMBOWOOT > GREAT GREAT DEAL!!!!

Saw this exact thing at Best Buy yesterday - $79.99

If you want something like that, waiting and paying the extra $40 is kind of worth it.

They're not intended to do this by default. There are various 3rd party programs and channels that can be installed to allow this. But if your primary goal is to stream content over the network, I'd look at other options.

You CAN NOT stream your movies from external USB devices. I believe you need the Roku XS for USB use.

Comparing today's Woot (Roku HD Legacy, Model #N1100) vs the lowest-tier new unit (Roku2 HD, Model #3000C), here's what you get for $20 besides a longer warranty and smaller footprint:

ADD:
- Dual-band 802.11n (N1100 does 802.11b/g only)
- Bluetooth 3.0 (works only with the Motion remote, which is currently N/A as a standalone purchase - I expect it will cost at least $15 based on the price of the Enhanced remote currently available).

DELETE:
- 10/100 Base-T Ethernet (No RJ-45 connector on the 3000C)
- S-video (480i)
- Component video (Y/Pb/Pr) (720p/480p)
- Optical Digital Audio

REPLACE:
- Legacy Composite video and audio (R/W/Y) on N1100 replaced with single plug that requires the use of a 3-in-1 adapter (included) on 3000C.
- Basic-1 remote on N1100 upgraded to Basic-2 remote on 3000C, adds the "Star" button only.

LAST FIVE WOOTS:
04/12/13 Eye-Fi Mobile 8GB Wireless Memory Card - $35
03/01/13 Powerbag 3000mAh Charging Bag - $40

I bought a referb same model here a few years back. I find it a great investment. Especially for my MLB.com. As for the Netflix the streaming is the same price and they have been putting a lot of new content up of late. Amazon has new releases and weekend movie deals. Also the Pandora is great to have in the living room for parties. I'm in for one to put in my office.

I love mine. A few neat tricks:

Get the Youtube channel and link it to a list of 80's music videos. Set to play all and pretend it's MTV when they still played music.

Splash out cash for playon.tv and watch Hulu, regular Hulu, on your TV. Also gets you access to the Daily Show and Colbert Report streams. playon is a bit unstable, but that made-in-a-garage feel is probably why they haven't been sued to death yet.

Put up the Yule Log Fireplace in the middle of summer just because.

We should all unite and e-mail Hulu to try to convince them to put a regular Hulu on the Roku! I can stream it from my PC for free, why not my Roku? I'm a poor college student who can't afford all sorts of subscriptions, and I'm sure they'd make enough money off of all the advertising they do during the commercial interruptions. (I have a friend with Hulu Plus and there are still regular commercial breaks 3-4 times per show, which is why I went with Netflix instead :D)

Thanks, good point. However, a quick Google search finds a number of workarounds and hacks, such as this one, and a whole website devoted to AppleTV hacks: AppleTVHacks.net. So that's not a deal killer for me (Woot! being sold out is a bigger deal killer).

Don't get sucked into the marketing of 1080 over 720p.

The human eye cannot tell the difference if you sit 6 feet or more from the TV, which is a typical distance for most.

So unless you sit right on top of your set, ignore the hype of 1080p.

false. I have the original roku and I still have to pay for Hulu. However, for $8 a mo, + $8 for Netflix + Amazon as needed, it's still a LOT cheaper than cable, which I have gotten rid of.

It's like a Pandora or Slacker - but you can pick the exact artist or album to play without having to listen to all the other stuff you DON'T want to listen to.

MOG is a pay service. $5/month to be a member, $10 if you also want the ability to d/l to a mobile device. So while the MOG Roku channel is free, using that channel for a year will cost you more than the Roku itself did.

There's a reason free Hulu isn't available, and it's the same reason there's certain shows on free Hulu that inexplicably are not available on Hulu Plus.

It's all about the contracts. Certain contracts content providers signed explicitly did not allow streaming to television. When many of these things were signed, Hulu Plus wasn't even a consideration... computer streaming was the only concern. Hopefully down the road things will change, but free Hulu won't be allowed natively on Roku in the near future.

You are missing one important factor, screen size. The larger the screen the further from the TV you can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. Sure with a 32" TV, you may not be able to tell the difference past 6 ft, but with a 70" TV you can tell the difference at much further away.
