I assume you have to pay for updates on this?

Didn't we just have this a few days ago? You're better off paying a bit more for the lifetime maps.

Hmmm.... this looks like "nice to have" when I don't have a data connection. Too bad lifetime updates cost $100.

Is there an advantage to having a dedicated GPS device as opposed to a GPS app for a smartphone or tablet?

I love the TomTom I bought here, but mine had lifetime maps. Much better than the Garmins and others I have tried!

We gave this unit to my brother.... for Christmas. It didn't last until New Years...... There are better devices out there with FREE updates.

Yeah, you don't need a cell signal.

No lifetime maps (Believe me, if it had it it would say it) you do get one free update when you get your gps, though. So... that's a plus, I guess.

I have the 3.5". My TomTom is terrific. Initial updates are free and unless you live in a place where the roads are always changing, you don't need new maps.

Wooted myself one of the now-ancient 510s some years ago and it's still working great. I'd like a new one because, just like me, my TomTom feels like it's gotten fat as its aged and (also like me) its battery doesn't last as long as it used to.

BUT - the old guy has BlueTooth and it rocks. Works as a data device for downloading traffic, weather, POI info, and map updates - but more importantly, it also works as a handsfree kit for taking calls in the car and keeps me from looking like a Borg while I do it (plus the sound quality is much better).

I wouldn't buy a new GPS unless it had BT support. Then again, that will cost a *lot* more than $70. This is a deal. If you don't care about BT, then get this.

Does this mount to the windshield, dash, or both? Windshield mounted is illegal in some states

It would have an M after the model # for the free lifetime maps and a T after it for free lifetime traffic. I bought one used from amazon that I like it was the Tom Tom 540xxl TM.

As someone who has owned several Tom Tom and Garmin models over the last couple of years, Garmin is FAR superior to Tom Tom.

My favorite story about Tom Tom's, is about a moderately priced unit I had about 2 years ago. Whenever I would enter a new destination address (which is harder to do than on a Garmin), it would ask for the nearest cross street. And needless to say, when I am in an unfamiliar area, I did not KNOW the cross street, lol. And without it, it wouldn't let you proceed.

Get a Garmin.

That being said, this is a decent price.

Good question. Depends on the smart phone. I had the android google phone and its'GPS technology was right up there with stand alone GPS units like this one and Garmins. Yes there might have been some isolated instances where a Tom Tom or a Garmin had the edge but I liked the Android's GPS so much I didn't feel bad when my Garmin bit the dust. Now I own an iPHone. Totally different story. It comes with a GPS built in but its a joke. I have bought two GPS apps, one for $49.00 and the other for .99 The .99 GPS works better than the $49.00 app and neither of them hold a candle to my stand alone Garmin. Honestly my only issue with the .99 version is:

1. It has taken me on a wrong turn! But... after a half mile it corrects itself. The problem is that in southern california when you get on the wrong freeway, it can take 10 - 15 minutes before you are on your way in the right direction.

2. Related to number one... If you do make a wrong turn, because it doesn't warn you as cleanly as the Garmin, it takes longer to correct itself. The Garmin responded right away and mapped out a new route. The .99 one waits up to a half mile before it realizes I screwed up or it screwed up.

I was convinced with the Android I would never need a stand alone GPS unit again. With the iPhone I am not sure about that.

I just bought the XLM340 LIVE. Haven't used it much yet, but so far it's more than I expected, and I have been reading about them for a couple years now. I believe it was $160 ... but having it put me in the right lane was a must!

Your first two points are subjective at best. To say something is superior (without basis) is little more than an opinion (I can say that because I have a differing opinion-I don't like the Garmin). As for your second point, I hate the way the Garmin inputs addresses (which is one of the primary reasons I don't like the Garmin), but I fully accept that it's because I find the TomTom's input method more natural and so it's nothing more than my opinion.

I will give you that the Garmin offers some nifty features that I don't think TomTom offers (such as pre-planning routes and the addition of POIs using your computer). Advanced pre-planning is something I could only really find useful if I were going on a long trip and wanted to set up all my intermediate stops in advance.

As for the third point, the only time I've ever had the TomTom suggest that I should input a cross street, it's because my map is outdated and did not have the section of street I was navigating to. Otherwise, it's never asked for a cross street.

Anyone know if the rumor about this model intermixing French pronunciations with English is still valid?

I've already pre-planned a trip with the XLM 340 LIVE that I recently bought. Just letting you know. :-) Also pre-planned 2 local outings just to test it out ... all from sitting in my chair in the house.

You will always have coverage no matter what, and dependent on your carrier, you will always have voice and data at the same time. One plus about cell phone GPS, is whenever there is a map update, its usually free.

Yes, this has a handy mount that works on the dash or on the windshield. Best mount of the 3 navigation units I have used.

Anyone considering upgrading this for traffic updates, I strongly recommend you check reviews for your area. service seems to vary widely. System is intuitive, and easy to, um, pardon me, navigate. At this price, I wouldn't pull the trigger, it is still worth waiting for lifetime maps, for a little bit more $$$.

Homer Simpson is one voice , of many available.
Also worth noting, my unit seems to lock up sometimes. If I'm on the road I can reset it, but then it reverts to an older map.
In certain towns it will constantly tell me to stay to the right, even though I am miles away from a turn, which gets annoying. I haven't thoroughly explored this function, so I may be able to shut it off, but it doesn't do it in all areas. It is excellent in my area at finding points of interest. Not perfect, but much better than phone app. Next time I will try Garmin though.

There are ways to get free maps... Google is your friend. The nice thing about TomTom is that you can use maps shared by other users.
