Yep! Convention I'm speaking at holds a writing contest every year. It's a wild 24 hour short story (3000-6000 words) maniacal event, and the winner gets free VIP passes to next year's convention and publication in the official convention book (among other things). Then about half a year is given to either extend that story (if it doesn't place) to 6000-12000 words or write a whole new story to be placed in the following year's charity anthology.
It's not unheard of for writers to get uber burned out with writing for it >.> But it's so worth it.
I almost placed in last year's contest, but forgot that it was supposed to be PG-rated just as I was approaching the bloodiest part of the story x.x Managed to curb it down to PG-13, but it wasn't quite low enough on the rating scale. It's a pain writing PG cyberpunk, that's for damned sure x.x I'm hoping I'll have a lot better luck with this year's contest/next year's theme.
