But I have hours and hours of full HD (1920x1080)
video in the AVCHD format, which Macs just do not
seem to like. I'm not looking to run a lot of fancy filters
or anything...just be able to do basic editing.

I already have an extra monitor (1920x1080) so I'm
thinking THIS machine might be a cheap $300 solution
to my video problem.

In short, will this machine handle full HD AVCHD editing
(without getting a new vid card, power supply, etc.?)

Thanks.

You do realize that you can simply install boot camp on your mac, install windows and can then use any windows video software you like without having to buy a new machine?

Not that I'm not trying to sway you, from your quest.... but no point in getting a new machine when you can probably just upgrade your software and op system.

mtbandit wrote:I bought the 6754 the week it was released for under $500. It has been a great system, incredibly stable, and hasn't been a lick o'trouble. The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of an external wireless antenna. To improve the signal in my office I had to actually remove the antenna from the front bezel and run the wire out the back of the unit. I've been trying to find the external antenna connector ever since (earlier models had it, and there's a blank on the back for installing it).

Not a gaming system, but for most it should be a very good buy.

I have been very happy with my p6654y(micro center) and my p6674y(Woot!) purchases. Much the same as the one on sale here. The thing that caught my eye was the absence of the external wireless connector and and external antenna that came with both of mine. I would have done the same as you and run the cable outside. Did HP really save that much money by going to an internal antenna? It also had to limit the range and direction of the signal. I'd ask what HP was thinking here, but I know it was the bottom line.

Okay, so I am OMGOMGOMGPONIESOMG PONIES! on computer knowledge and have always just bought whatever cheapy package Dell or Gateway has tossed together for me. I don't do much as far as video or gaming, but what is the deal y'all are saying about the power supply? Good idea to up it, or good enough for someone who just does zynga poker and runs some video? Is it bad for the computer life or something?

My intent is to make a HDPVR to record over the air tv. If it needs a dedicated video card and a tV tuner card, then this would not work right cause it has only one available slot. Am I correct in this?

+1,000,000 on this!

This is a TELL-TALE sign that someone hijacked your card number. First a very small charge to 'test' the card; then the bigger ones. How do I know, you ask...? Yep, you guessed it. This happened to us when Monoprice got hacked a year ago. Be careful, be proactive, and call your CC company now!

would like to use this for audio recording/mixing/mastering. Have six gigs of ram and two external hard drives to add to it and would probably buy a firewire card. you think this could handle some serious audio work? my previous dell could handle 8-16 inputs of a/d conversion but don't have much experience with HP or the components of this machine.

That's a great question.

The press coverage of the news isn't exactly clear, but from what I've been able to glean, HP will no longer make or sell any consumer goods, including computers. Apparently they will continue to produce business computers, printers, and expand into software.

I've seen no mention of tech support for consumer products at all, however one can assume it will continue as a sub-function of their business lines. At least for a while.

naratcliffe wrote:Anyone know if the motherboard is good? I don't see any mention of that. Seems like a lot of people are giving this PC positive reviews, which leads me to think the MoBo isn't bottle-necking the system at all... but just checking.

(p.s. I would be using this for gaming after a few upgrades)

HP for the Pavilion 6000 series uses a Foxconn MB using the AMD 785G chipset with integrated graphics using ATI Radeon 4200. This uses shared memory for the graphics display. I would have to say it was not designed to be a gaming system. Not that it wont play games, but for sure, the graphics would suffer. A 250 watt PS is limited on what it will support in the way of upgrades. The MB will only support up to a 95 watt processor. It would not support the hotter running processors. Ventilation would be another factor.

This particular MB was made specifically for HP so going to Foxconn to find it gets you nothing. HP has some limited info here. System specifications: p6710f and p6754y. Not a lot of info, but I hope it helps.

Don't take me wrong, I have 2 very similar models and they server me well. They are good systems, but as a gaming system, I would have doubts.

I was grabbing one for my parents when it sold out mid-process. Any chance a Sold Out item might reappear a little later on if a few people's CC's bounce or cancel the order, or does Woot just leave it Sold Out for the day?

You can buy a DVI-D to HDMI converter plug. Only the video is available as DVI-D does not support audio.

I don't see this as a great deal. I purchased basically this same computer. Refurb HP with amd quad core 2.7ghz, 6gb ram (ddr2), 750gb hard drive and mid range graphic card almost 3 years ago on woot for $399. Seems to me that this should be less after that much time has passed and it only being marginally better.

Good beater computer I guess.

Sometimes they get more. I was waiting for the $299 compact form HP that I got for my Mom a couple months ago to come back so I could get one for myself, but it hasn't so far, so I snagged this.
Sorry - realized i didn't answer your question. If they get CC bounce backs where they have some left, it's not available again unless they have enough for another day, but that wouldn't be rigth away. Now if there's a Woot Off, you might see it sooner.

Don't know how it happened but Woot was the only thing I purchased today. Probably just a coincidence that it happened the same day.

After multiple phone calls, Napster has cancelled the illegal charge and my credit card company has cancelled my account and is issuing a new card. Major hassle but I'm not willing to take any chances.

I didn't order this item today, but your comment did cause me to investigate my online bank statement. Yesterday, a $109 charge from "VESTA *AT&T 866-608-3007 ORUS" was charged to my account. Called the number and found out that it was for a prepaid AT&T Go phone- which I don't have...
Just finished talking with the bank and Visa to get the dispute handled and the card cancelled. Joy.

You are far better off getting a Silicon Dust HomeRun 2-tuner device that connects the tuner to your network. Then you can use any computer in your house that has Windows Media Center to watch/record live TV. You can also watch/record with Linux and Macs. The 2-tuner version means you can watch one channel on one PC and record another from a different PC. Works great over WiFi too.

I picked up mine on woot a while back and have never regretted it. Best thing since sliced bread, and I can watch OTA TV for free from any PC in the house.

Sorry, I'm the one who started it. It's probably just a coincidence that one the day I ordered something from Woot, I find a bogus charge on the same account. I didn't happen to look at the account before the Woot purchase so I can't say if it was already there or not.

1 - One electrical S/PDIF Output
2 - One VGA port
3 - Four USB 2.0 ports
4 - One RJ45 10/100 Mb/s LAN
5 - Center/Subwoofer-out (yellow - orange)
6 - Rear speaker-out (black)
7 - Line-in (light blue)
8 - Line-out (lime)
9 - Mic-in (pink)
10 - Side speaker-out (gray)
11 - One DVI-D port

Nope. DVI-D (video only) or VGA. You can pick up a DVI-to-HDMI converter plug, but you'll have to run the audio yourself. If you upgrade to a video card, you can pick one that has HDMI out. You still might not be able to get the sound through the video card to be combined on the HDMI out unless the video card also has audio onboard.

There are 4 PCIe 1x slots and 1 PCIe 16x slot for video card. So you can get a PCi 1x tuner and a PCIe 16x video card, no problem.

That's the disappointing part, have to run a network card to get gigabit.

'Sokay, looks like it's a Realtek chip so VMware probably wouldn't support it anyway.
